ou should not have got rid of larry Hunter. Larry,s teams had rebounders and shooters every year. his teams were in top 25 and beat teams like Syracuse and Connecticut
If ou kept Larry he would still be here even in the face of offers from bigger schools. no doubt Ou would have a Wichita state Gonzaga type team had they retained hunter

Nope. Two words: Laferla twins

Also, overly predictable and unwavering double high post offense.

Larry was in the top 25 for two glorious weeks one season.

I'll have what you're having.

Evidently Bobcat2000 is not aware of the entire scenario of what occurred to result in his removal. I am not saying that I agreed in the manner that it was handled by then AD Tom Boeh. But in my opinion, the final result was needed. Please note that his record at WCU is below 500.

What has happened in the Ohio's program has been very successful. Unfortunately, his replacement TOS found out that Ohio was not his forte and especially his wife who hated Athens, Ohio. Since that time the selection of JG, JC and SP as head coaches have been successful with good records. I just hope that Coach Phillips will stick to his statement that he will see his daughter graduate from Athens H.S. He is very good and our program will continue to be elevated.

This has to be the strangest trolling job I've seen on this site. The OP cannot be serious, but at the same time what an odd thing to try to yank our collective chain about.

This is a fascinating post that might or might not have been created by someone who knew Coach Hunter well or by someone who just wanted to pull our chains, but it is revealing none the less. This was certainly an issue among the locals in Athens who remember Coach Hunter from his youth in Athens County. Coach Hunter almost left for the Kansas State job in 1994 (I can't remember exactly how close he came to getting the job, but he was a finalist.) I seem to recall that he wanted to stay, but his family would have preferred he left, but I can't swear to the exact details.

When he got rid of Coach Hunter, the fairly new AD at the time Mr. Boeh wanted to send a message that the Ohio Bobcats would be a notch above the rest in the MAC, as far as expectations were concerned. I vividly remember some locals voicing their displeasure in Tony's after a football game the following year, when I came back into town for a visit. Coach O' Shea was hardly Mr. Popular after that hiring fiasco. Though he faced a lot of criticism, he certainly has to have lead one of the most charmed coaching lives in Division I basketball history to still be employed after getting Bryant up to the Division I classification. Mr. Boeh went on to become the AD at Boise State and was reassigned a couple of years ago to another job within the university, but I can't remember the specifics of the matter.

We are in a much better place today than we were after Coach Hunter's firing. Though I wish Coach Hunter and Coach O'Shea well, one certainly got the short end of the stick and one has lead a charmed coaching life.

Bosh went to Fresno State where his charming personality got him canned.

Larry had a nice run in Athens, always played a challenging schedule non-league and had some of his best talent when let go. However it is what it is, despite recent success, we took a step back with Timmy

It wasn't a very big step back. Timmy got us to the same number of NCAA tournaments as Larry and came a heck of a lot closer to winning a game in the tourney. After Trent left Larry's teams looked an awful lot like Timmy's.

Larry 95-79 (.545)
Timmy 120-95 (.558)

And Timmy was more successful in the MAC Tourney.

And Timmy was left with very good talent, it's where the program went from there.

And if you want to remove Larry's best years, why not remove his worst year, and see what the percentages were.

Larry was a great guy and came in a cleaned up the Billy Hahn mess. Ohio had some big wins and some good times with him in charge. He and Boeh just didn't see eye and things were starting to get stagnate.

But he was a good man!

Timmy left John Groce some pretty good talent as well. Michael Allen, Jerome Tillman, Tommy Freeman, Devaughn Washington, and Justin Orr were all on John Groce's first team.

Yeah, and Timmy's record wasn't as good as Larry's with the same kids, and Groce quickly surpassed Timmy's success after he taught the team to play a little defense. Look at the MAC record of Larry +39 v Timmy +8

Gallia Cat, OU Van & Billy the Cat, you made some great points. Hate to sound like an old man, but as nice as Coach Hahn was in public and he would always talk to people after Mass at Christ the King in Athens, or anywhere around town, he just lost his composure during games. He literally became unglued. You wanted to like the guy, but he just didn't have temperament and judgement to be a head coach. Can't imagine any other MAC coach with two future NBA players who ended up near the MAC basement. Coach Hunter had to really had to pick up the pieces.

Coach Hunter left Coach O'Shea some talent and while Coach O' Shea could recruit, he couldn't consistently win. This is what I meant by a charmed life. Not many other coaches with his record are still coaching Division I basketball. We are in a much better place today. I cannot begin to tell the younger readers here that what it took Coach Nee years to build, it nearly came crashing down in two short years with Coach Hahn. At the MAC level, hiring the right coach is the toughest thing in AD does. You can make a mistake or two in a power conference, not the MAC.

I'm sure Hunter thinks about what could have been if he took the Kansas State job. I was a student at that time and remember vividly that he was K-State's first choice and had a contract in hand. The year prior, Trent was a freshman and almost led OHIO to a monster upset over K-State in Manhattan.

Rumor was Hunter left the contract in front seat of his car at the Convo and one of The POST reporters saw it through the passenger seat window. Not saying Hunter would have been a good fit, but 23 years later, I'm sure he's thought about it more than once.

Timmy's record in his first year was a lot closer to the record that Larry had the previous season than Groce's was to Timmy's last season. My point is that we weren't in a worse position when Timmy left than we were when Larry left. I think the last 6 years of Larry's tenure we pretty much like the 7 seven years of Timmy. There is the common thought process on this board that the Timmy years were terrible. They weren't. They were just frustrating because there was always the feeling that we could be better than we were. There is also the feeling that Larry's tenure was better than it was. After Trent we were no different than Timmy's years except we won more games in the MAC tournament under Timmy.
