This is a fascinating post that might or might not have been created by someone who knew Coach Hunter well or by someone who just wanted to pull our chains, but it is revealing none the less. This was certainly an issue among the locals in Athens who remember Coach Hunter from his youth in Athens County. Coach Hunter almost left for the Kansas State job in 1994 (I can't remember exactly how close he came to getting the job, but he was a finalist.) I seem to recall that he wanted to stay, but his family would have preferred he left, but I can't swear to the exact details.
When he got rid of Coach Hunter, the fairly new AD at the time Mr. Boeh wanted to send a message that the Ohio Bobcats would be a notch above the rest in the MAC, as far as expectations were concerned. I vividly remember some locals voicing their displeasure in Tony's after a football game the following year, when I came back into town for a visit. Coach O' Shea was hardly Mr. Popular after that hiring fiasco. Though he faced a lot of criticism, he certainly has to have lead one of the most charmed coaching lives in Division I basketball history to still be employed after getting Bryant up to the Division I classification. Mr. Boeh went on to become the AD at Boise State and was reassigned a couple of years ago to another job within the university, but I can't remember the specifics of the matter.
We are in a much better place today than we were after Coach Hunter's firing. Though I wish Coach Hunter and Coach O'Shea well, one certainly got the short end of the stick and one has lead a charmed coaching life.
I'm sure Hunter thinks about what could have been if he took the Kansas State job. I was a student at that time and remember vividly that he was K-State's first choice and had a contract in hand. The year prior, Trent was a freshman and almost led OHIO to a monster upset over K-State in Manhattan.
Rumor was Hunter left the contract in front seat of his car at the Convo and one of The POST reporters saw it through the passenger seat window. Not saying Hunter would have been a good fit, but 23 years later, I'm sure he's thought about it more than once.
