Sounds like they need to fire their strength and conditioning coach.
Kidding right?

Most of this has NOTHING to do with strength and conditioning. One fan went bonkers last season and blamed strength and conditioning for one of the players Retinal tear. Insane knee jerk reaction. How does strength and conditioning protect a retinae or an achilles?

I am convinced that the problem lies in kids committing to one sport early on and playing too many games with not enough diversity or multi sport activity to create muscle balances rather than muscle specificity. One man's anecdotal evidence.

Blaming the strength coach is fine except when Basgere was here we did not have those injuries....He left there and a new strength coach has come to take over and the injuries continued....you may know the new one.... http://megasportsnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Adam...

I really believe that JG felt that he made the right move.
He did make the right move it just may not have worked out (tbd). But he will be able to get an Ohio-level job if he gets let go by Illinois.
So did Christian.
The difference is Groce built up the program and moved on leaving on solid footing. Christian came in milked it and then jumped ASAP leaving the program with the cubbards bare /lean. I thought the Jim Christian hire was brilliant but boy was I wrong. He had one foot out the door the second he got here.

I wish him nothing but struggles at BC.

Borna: that was a toungue in cheek slam to a poster who every year on the football board post we need to fire the strength coach after a few injuries. (Though credit to him this year he did not go down that road).

Ha. Maybe he will venture over here and see the response then and become a bit more informed. Makes me remember why I miss pix and emoticons here.

I use those emoticons and pix in many other forums. Anxious to get those back someday. Thanks for the heads up

love those GIFs http://www.illinoisloyalty.com/i/n/il-mnn-13.gif

[/QUOTE]Me too, I thought it was a great hire but happy he's gone. Chances he's at BC longer that Saul's here is slim to none, and Slim just left the bar.

I'm not gonna go as far to wish him ill, but I agree with your opinion. What Saul inherited, vs what Christian inherited was a drastically different situation.

Oh, please. He didn't milk anything. He came in worked hard and then took a better job when it presented itself. If that BC job hadn't come along he would probably still be here working hard and catching guff from some fans because he presents a grumpy countenance. He did come into a great situation but he didn't leave the cupboard completely bare. The situation Saul came into wasn't much different than what Groce or TOS walked into.

That's a fair point. I still believe he left the program in lesser position than he walked into, but it couldn't have been much better when he walked in.

In the end, I don't care about where Christian left the program. That was 2 years ago.

Back to the thread topic, Groce's Illini have a nice opportunity to get back to .500 or better in the B1G over the next 6 games, with two of those being against Rutgers.

Watched the Minnesota game, and thought JG looked like his old self down the stretch when he coaxed the game into OT and then the Ilini lit it up in OT.

I know Illinois has a lot of injuries, but so does 0-9(B1G) Rutgers and it took the Illini 3 overtimes to beat them tonight.

I hate to say it, but I'm calling it now. Groce is fired, Miami fires Cooper...and Groce is the next coach of the Redhawks. Talk about adding fuel to the rivalry!

Oh my and we thought Grunkemeyer going over there got things fired up? Please tell me this was just a bad dream by a devoted Bobcat fan.

What is it exactly that makes you think this is going to happen?

(I hope to heck it doesn't)

If he's fired, I wonder if Xavier or Dayton taking a flyer on him? I could see both of their coaches moving up after this year.

Just don't see Groce coming back to the MAC (famous last words).
I think if he does get canned, there are other schools from "bigger" conferences, the Big East comes to mind, that would want him.

Not going to happen, he's a midwest guy through and through.

A lot? Traveled to Rutgers with 4 of the pre season starting 5 in street clothes and one of their current scoring leaders a game time question with best case scenario playing hurt. Relying on Frosh y and a couple of non BIG caliber
players and role players to start and carry the load. Can't ever remember seeing in all my years à more decimated roster or a more intolerant fanbase

Half the schools in the Big East are Midwest schools. Wouldn't be shocked to see him land in the MVC. I also don't see him taking the Miami job. No way he takes less money in the MAC than what he was making when he left.

Or perhaps a more ignorant fan base? I didn't realize the injury situation had become that bad. I hope the conversation you and I had a few weeks back re: John getting another year remains true.

That athletic department is such a hot mess that he'll get another year. But it's a lame duck year to end all lame duck years.

I guess that lame duck status depends on whether or not his team performs well. Win 21-22 games next year and he'll be retained, or he'll be in demand elsewhere. To your point though about the mess their AD is in, that was one reason I wasn't sure going to Illinois was a good idea. Mike Thomas was on the hot seat when JG was hired, and they didn't even have a university president if I recall correctly.

Unfortunately for him, the fanbase and administration is going to look at 23 wins, then 20, then 19, then (at best) 15. Had the program been trending more upward, the injuries buy more of a pass.

We know, like, and some even worship JG here. Not the case there. As discussed before, his fate will depend on when the new AD is on board: by end of NCAA Tournament - he is most likely gone. If after that point, he gets the last year, but staff most likely takes hit (simply so new AD can point to tangible action).

You really think an MVC school would take him? I know he's had injuries...but results are results. He's going to have to go a MAC or perhaps ever lower tier school to recoup his rep.

Maybe it's just me, but I would take Coach Groce back in a H-E-A-R-T-B-E-A-T!!
