Great points on Charlie Coles, and the affect his passing had on the rivalry.

This would be an interesting survey to give to all MAC fans: Who are your biggest rivals? And set it up to get 2-3 replies from each school's fanbase.

Perhaps the biggest rivalries in the MAC right now are Akron/Kent - an obvious one that got even bigger in the years the two teams played in the Acme Zip game and probably Toledo/BG. Thanks to a certain mother, our games with Akron are on the rivalry level too.

My own feelings are that our rivalry with 'Kron was born out of the success of both programs in the past 10+ years, and not born out of ZM's mother's engagement with OUr fanbase. But I see your tongue in your cheek?

I think we might be talking about two different things. The Akron player's initials are DH.

Oh, Ok. I may be misremembering, I thought Zeke's mother got entangled with BA a bit.

Goes way back before Zeke's mom. This involved "flying birds."

My wife and both sisters went to Miami and while you would never mistake any of them for die hard sports fans, they too were at best indifferent or aloof to the rivalry. My wife usually says "I want OU to win so you won't be grumpy if they lose (she is spot on there!)."

One of their off campus bookstores, Dubois, must still recognize it as a rivalry because I have seen this shirt sold in their store:

http://www.duboisbookstore.com/miami/MerchDetail.aspx?Mer...

I think more than anything there is a rampant apathy towards athletics sans maybe hockey in Oxford. Our students could certainly improve but there is a significant difference in spirit in Ohio students.

2001 called, they want their shirt back.

I thought she got into it more with their own fansbase than ours.

Well, Dan was the coach, and that was his Mom. But the player with the not-so-nice gestures initials were AH, I do believe.
