Reading the article presents a very positive view of both Connar and the Western Michigan program.

The Ohio basketball fan in me is glad to see him gone. The college basketball fan in me is sad. Connar Tava is my kind of basketball player.

don't we have a scholarship available for an incoming MBA student. ;)

Can we give an academic scholarship?

What's the diff between an athletic schol and an academic one?

I feel bad for WMU fans on this one, but I'm excited to follow where Tava ends up. Quality player.

Bronco fans seem to think he's going to DePaul.

We do have a scholarship remaining - the one left open when Ryan Taylor transferred.

Well, that would be a miserable downgrade for him. IMO.

The difference (at least when I had them) was in the requirements to maintain said scholarships. Academic had minimum credit hour requirements per quarter/semester and a much higher than minimum gpa requirement to maintain the scholly. Guys on athletic ones just needed to stay eligible per minimum NCAA rules.

So, for instance, many athletes would only take minimum # of credit hours and stuff it with gen-eds/easy classes (as they could) when they were in season, and then make up for it during out of season quarters. Couldn't do that if you were on an academic scholly.

For us there were also some additional stipulations put on the athletes on athletic scholly's - such as mandatory study table sessions etc - which is something that wasn't mandatory for academic scholarships (but generally considered wise to utilize).

Edit to add - I'd also say that academic scholly's were re-awarded on a quarter-by-quarter (semester now) basis. If you failed to meet the requirements (depending on how bad you did - thankfully I never found out) I believe they put you on academic probation for the next quarter and if you didn't get back above the threshold then the scholarship was revoked the next quarter. For athletic scholarships, unless the coach/AD were a-holes, they didn't do much revoking of scholarships. Once you had it you had it unless you trasnferred/voluntarily gave it up or became full on ineligible/kicked out of school by NCAA.

Didn't Saul give that to a walk-on I think Drew Crabtree who is a Jr. Jason Carter should be new player next year. Only Setty will be gone. Someone who follows recruiting may correct me. Am I wrong about Crabtree?

I think that was the assumption - they had the open scholly, so he gave it to Drew to reward him for this year. So Carter replaces Setty's scholarship, and there's one open after this semester ends. That's my understanding anyway.

Reports are that he's joined JC at BC. Must've heard that the best part of BC basketball is eating in restaurants a lot.

This is generally how this works. If, for some reason, there's still an open scholarship, Crabtree could get it again, but it's unlikely the Bobcats won't find someone else to offer it to. It's rare in basketball for walk-ons to become permanently on scholarship.
