. . . for the umpteenth year, my buddy and I meet at the former Damon's in Newark on the Friday of the NCAA first round games after a long week of work.
We settle down in the dining area with our families in time for the end of the Temple v. Iowa game just as Temple's Quenton DeCosey gets fouled on a 3-pt. attempt with his team down 3 points and with 2 seconds left in the game.
One table over, the fan that every sports bar in America has that has to demonstratively demonstrate his high Indiana BBIQ yells out, "it's a tie game if he makes all three foul shots."
DeCosey hits the first two foul shots to pull Temple within 1 point before Iowa calls a time out. Not thinking clearly, I dare my buddy (Mr. Swank knows as UT Doug) to turn around and tell this basketball savant that "if he hits the next foul shot it's a tie game." Still not thinking clearly, I sweeten the deal by offering $20 for accepting the offer.
Of course, my buddy calls my bluff and points out the obvious to this oblivious fan.
Adding insult to injury, Iowa beats Temple after DeCosey sent it into overtime with this 3-of-3 from the line.
