Reposting from other thread - “Just watched Portland/USF. Portland went the distance losing in the final 1:30 and 100% looks like a better team than we do. They're certainly bigger across the board. “

Torvik has us a 7 pt favorite 78-71. Portland ranked #267 aka a bottom half MAC team.

Going into today I'd say we should win by more than that.

After today, I think Torvik is nuts. No way should we be favored.

Agree but can't see it happening. Our defense is horrific and simply can't stop dribble penetration. Has a zone defense even been considered?

AJ Clayton

32 3-Point FG Attempts
7 3-Point FG made

7-32=21%

Atrocious.

Worst thing that ever happened was any report of connecting Clayton with NBA draft boards.

Going to be tough to win games in 2024-2025 if the Pre-Season MAC Player of the Year doesn’t start knocking down the 3-ball.

He needs to get his confidence back…along with the rest of the team. Hopefully it starts to come back this morning.

Hope to see Elliott get more minutes today. He's a smooth operator and not afraid or intimidated. My only complaint is that he's probably playing too unselfish when he's on the court as a true freshman. That is understandable though. Would like to see him penetrate and create more, but so far, really like what I see out of this kid.

Not only discussed, but Boals has used it multiple times in multiple games now. Which is super worrisome because a) it's the non-con where you're usually willing to take some lumps if it means learning/building for later in the year and b) Boals is a man-to-man guy.

Which means even he has recognized its SO bad that by going to it this early he's signaling it might have to be something we do all year at times.

I agree with this. Upper class men might respond to a little fight or flight pressure if the kids play well.

Official spread close to what Torvik said.

Ohio by 8.5 with total points at ~150

Implied score of ~ 79-71 more or less.

Any win right now would be a major confidence builder.

Unbelievable start today! Playing with a ton of energy on both sides of the court and AJ Clayton finally connecting from deep!

Chapter 2 in my series of 3 year complaints, I am really done with Hadaway hoisting from 3. He better be wide open or late i nthe shot clock or both otherwise it is stupid. Referencing chapter 1, Clayton has looked good in the paint the few times he was actually there today.

I'm not saying these guys can't ever shoot threes but you can't convince me this team wouldn't be better if these guys identified as paint first guys. I'm trying to compliment them...they are both excellent in the paint and play bigger than their size.

Started I believe 4 for 5 from 3. 3 for 21 since. 18 of 26 attempts from our forwards.

After a hot start, Ohio now shooting 7-26 (26.9%) from 3 point land. They need to be better with the looks they've been getting.

Not heard of multiple times the offensive team scores and gets the ball back due to foul on the defense after the made basket! What! Worse than second chance points....

What HUGE sequence for Ohio after the Elliott flagrant! Portland with a chance for a 7 point possession but settle for 3 after the missed free throws/field goals down low and then OU responds with a run of their own capped by a Clayton banker 3 while getting fouled.

Just when you think the game is over, Ohio gets lackadaisical and lets Portland trim the lead down to 9. They really need to cut down on their sloppy stretches.

I do agree that those two can take a couple of ill-advised threes every now and then, but I think there's something that we need to remind ourselves of. Those two taking threes at a high rate really opens up driving lanes for other players and forces the defense to know where they are at on the perimeter at all times. I know that's kind of new age basketball thinking, but when you have guys that can shoot being guarded by the other team's bigger players, that forces those big guys to do more than patrol the paint. If Hadaway only took 1 3PA and Clayton took 3 3PA instead of their 10 attempts per game, that would make it even more difficult to find driving lanes and/or post up opportunities for other. Even Searls taking 1-2 per game with Clayton on the floor has to keep defenses from full on doubling Clayton in the post. I'm sure that balance is something the group is always trying to fine tune and strike the perfect balance of inside/outside shots for those guys, but I don think we probably oversimplify the argument if we are just looking at their shot percentages from 2 vs from 3.

Also not saying I always agree with this style of play, but it's pretty clear to me that our roster has been built with this style of play in mind.

The way that they play makes me pray that they can barely make the cut for Cleveland.
