This time comes every year, when Saturday home football games are done, and it effectively becomes basketball season, at least in terms of weekend trips to Athens. It's been a great four home Saturday's for tailgating and comraderi, but it's now time for Saul Ball. I can't wait.

I am so geared up for this season. Lot of Saturday home games - and the weekday 7:00 games getting back to Cbus by 11:00 PM are always a 'can do"....

I feel the same way and that's no slight to the football team. It's mid-October and Saturday football in Athens is now officially over. Tough to sustain interest in something you can't see. The difference between the MAC and what I saw at Tennessee is as different as night and day. As someone said in another thread on the football board it's almost as it's simply a diversion for four short Saturdays.

That is your opinion. MAC football games I find competitive with a lot of good athletes. When fall Saturdays are over its time to watch the midweek games on TV.

If it's a "diversion", it's a lot of fun on those Saturday's. It's too bad we can't get an early November Saturday game. THAT would be fun, maybe with a hoops game to follow in the evening for a good, fun, full day.

That's fine. And like Alan, I'm not against the team. I'll still watch them on TV, or listen to the radio. But as someone who travels to Athens for most Saturday games, it's essentially like the season is over once the switch to the weeknight ESPN games kicks in. It's just a lot harder to come down for a Wednesday game and stay for the majority of the game when you live 90 miles away, and have to work the next morning.

The Convo>Peden is because the leaders back in the day thought Basketbll in Athens could be very good and very successful. Footbll, not so much. I guess they were right.

The potential is about the same to be honest. Final four in both sports. Boise/Wichita level revenue streams and a G5 power. I'm saying maximum here not that we are there or on the verge of doing so.

And if it's on ESPN3, it's the same 3-4 commercial all season long.

I'm a Tina Fey fan, but I'd be OK if I never see another commercial with Fay shopping with her go-to credit card.

Wes, that comment is a joke, right? Basketball has made the Sweet Sixteen. Football has been nowhere near #16. And, the difference is over 300 teams in b-ball to only 120_ in f-ball.

Football was ranked in the Top 25 a few years ago and about 250 schools play Division 1 football. We don't attract national top 100 recruits in any of the sports but are solid in most all of them. Hopefully we can start getting a few with better facilities and contend for national championships.

I thought there were 128 or so FBS schools.

I am looking forward to the season based on what I have seen up close and personal. This is a team with some interesting chemistry.

Of course, we can dream of seeing Ohio football make it to the playoffs but it's never going to happen. They would ultimately have to go 4-0 in non-conference play against all power conference opponents and completely obliterate the conference. Even then...long shot.

This year? Probably not. Houston is still ranked too high even though they have one loss. Which makes the argument for basketball even stronger. You can still go 12-0, beat two Big Ten teams and not get a lucrative bowl out of it. What kind of b.s. is that?

This is one of the reasons I've adopted the approach of "football is for tailgating". I love being outside, or in a bar, with a bunch of friends and watch the game with wings or meat on the grill and beers. It's a great time. But the way the game is run, with "bowl eligibility" rewarding mediocrity, and bowls being given to teams based on money, and not competitiveness, is a major turnoff in my caring about polls and results. I used to get too wound up about the crookedness of it all.

Conversely with basketball and basically every other sport in our country, success on the field is what gets a team into those big games that matter. It's real competition, not a popularity contest of sorts. It's why I argue without hesitation that college basketball is better. If only it had tailgating and perfect fall weather, it would be perfect. ;-)
