Good article by Arkley in today's Messenger:

http://www.athensmessenger.com/sports/ohiouniversity/brea...

First I'd heard that Wadley may redshirt, Tony is currently "slowed" by an ankle injury, Dartis is "noticeably bigger," Taylor's "body change...is as dramatic as any on the roster" but is dealing with a hand/thumb injury, Harley's back issue is still present, Kaminski credits Crabtree with playing a big part in turning around several things in his life, Carter will push Kaminski and Taylor for minutes.

Arkley's depth chart: Simmons, Campbell, Kaminski, Dartis, Block, Laster, Taylor, Carter, Culver, Harley, Dozier

speaking of the mess... what happened to subscription via survey? no content available without a subscription now apparently.

Which is fine, but the cost of online subscription seems like a lot.

An ad on the side of the website says starting Nov. 1, a subscription is required. Apparently, there wasn't enough money to be made via the survey questions. $8.95 for 28 days, or $6.95 if you allow auto renewal. That's about $35 for the season.

The only way to meaningful way to show that you value the content is with money. Newspapers are on an absolute shoestring budget already and we all take content for granted. Arkley is a professional who does a great job. He needs to eat too. We're lucky to have him covering teams we care about, but he can't do it for free.

You're right, I agree. I wasn't suggesting it should be free. I initially saw the cost for print and online in combination and thought it was expensive. I went back and looked. Seven bucks for a month isn't bad at all. I'm not wild about the auto renew, and would find a 6-month subscription in one shot to be more appealing.

I would only subscribe to the Messenger to read Arkley's pieces, so... decisions.

I like the idea of redshirting Wadly. He could be far more valuable next year than this year. I've always felt he really should have redshirted his freshman year.

Not that I want him to go, but this creates an additional option (I think):

Wadley red-shirts, and transfers if he wants, and opens a scholarship. It's possible given that he considered it this year, right?

If Wadley were to redshirt, wouldn't that create problems with scholarships for next year. We would be losing only 2 seniors, but have 3 commits. No?

I 100% agree about Arkley but the price is just too high. They are asking us to pay essentially the same amount as one of the larger newspapers who have considerably more content. But I'm sure someone smarter than me has set that price.

That's correct. Mompremier, Campbell and Kaminski out and Gareri, Butler and BVP in. I don't know how they think this is going to work.

Interesting that Khari is still having back issues. I feel bad for him.

It's totally understandable that someone who doesn't live in SE Ohio wouldn't want to drop upwards of $100/year for news from Athens County. This is the kind of conundrum that few publications have solved -- people are consuming more news than ever and paying less for it than ever. Something has to give, and so far what's giving is the jobs and salaries of the professionals researching, writing and editing the news. Craigslist killed classifieds, which once fueled most revenue at papers. Print ads, flyers and coupons, another key source of funds, are rapidly fading into history.

We want news, we want it professionally done, but it's human nature to pay as little as possible for it. Here are two stories that show just how dire things are:

I'll probably end up paying for the online subscription. Jason does good work that's worth it to me.

Plus let's be realistic. Wadley has had his chance and while he has had health issues, he does not fit into Saul's style. He's not a back to the basket guy. He doesn't shoot free throws or 3's. At least with Tone you get outside shooting and post play and you're going to see that with DT this year too. I see him hitting more 3's. Let's just enjoy Wadley's smile for another year and bid him sweet adieu with his free degree from the best college in the land.

Some interesting tweets from Arkley have come in the last few minutes about the roster situation. They are planning on redshirting Wadly and he will likely do a grad student transfer to another school after this year. Jason also has talked to Jaaron about where he'll be next year and Jaaron says he'll be at Ohio. Take it for what it's worth in November.

And lets give Saul a lot of credit for welcoming him back and giving him this chance to graduate for free and play a year at a MEAC or Metro Athletic or WAC or some other lower D1 conference. Many guys like Coach Cal or Jim Boeheim would have said Sayonara and taken the extra scholly. This worked for everyone. And I am sure Wads positivity will go a long way this year.

Very happy that Saul let Wadly stay, but this leaves us with 11 scholarship players before the season has even started. If we get banged up as the season goes on we could be in trouble.

I wonder if any of our four walk-ons will see significant minutes at times?

I'm not worried about 11 players. Most teams do not go that deep anyway.

Right now my only worry is PG. The one we have is awesome. But, there's just one. Not good.

From what I have seen of Dartis handles so far he is the back up. Much improved skills showing he REALLY worked hard on this since last season to become a reliable back up

I wouldn't give Saul too much credit for keeping Wadley. From what I've read it looks like it was the players who made a hard push to talk Wadley into staying, Saul was just smart enough to see that it wasn't worth disrupting the team's chemistry by pushing him out. Plus, I'm guessing there was no 5th yr transfer on the table to give his scholarship to this year. Easy choice.

Arkley's quality and the Messenger's lack of understanding in their customer demographics with a related pricing structure to maximize revenue seem to be two distinct issues.
