That's why they play the games. The US has not "slaughtered" too many opponents. They just squeaked by France with Toney Parker on the bench.

Okay, no denying the games lately have been close.

But in the exhibitions and early game(s) of Rio, all were blowouts.


How are we not soundly beating teams with second-line NBA players and less.

Monroe, those early exhib and real games were against the weakest teams in the field (except for one game agst Argentina). I think some of these better international teams are better at handling the physical play and they have more experience with how the game is played. Plus the USA team doesn't have a pure PG. No question the USA is the best team, but several of the international teams have enough firepower to be a threat.

I predict the USA will win the rest of their games more comfortably but I doubt they will be total blowouts.

I'd rather we take a team of guys 23 and under (something like that) and see how we do that way.

These aren't even games the way it is. We're so much better that these are exhibitions at best.

Football (with its under 23 rule -- with 3 age exceptions) has been fairly entertaining. After this year I wouldn't mind seeing the same applied to basketball.

A little off topic,but there was piece on the news this morning about the cash prizes U.S. Olympic Athletes receive for Gold,Silver or Bronze medals.
$25,000 for Gold,$15,000 for Silver and $10,000 for Bronze.

No big surprise that the IRS considers this income.
What was surprising is that they also consider,as income,the value of the medal itself.

This is in the news every two years. It's no surprise, it's earned income and clearly a taxable benefit. Same as Bowl Gifts are to players and staff.

There's an article on line today about the "Swag Bag" all Olympic athletes receive.

Guess the IRS will be making them pay Income Tax on that too.

Congress needs to lighten up and pass a law that olympic medals are not taxable. Why? Because...fun.

It's the like the old joke, "why does a dog lick his own nuts? because he can." Professional athletes must pay state and local income tax based on the pro-rata share of their income in every city they play a game. They might try and deduct expenses against the value of the medal.

USA 82, Spain 76. Americans controlled the game but could never pull away. Another example of how international basketball is within a reasonable distance of American pros. A team of American amateurs wouldn't stand a chance of being competitive.

Coaching yes.

But we're playing teams with mostly boarderline NBA players. Our top level stars shouldn't be struggling like this. All-Stars vs not shouldn't be this close.

Basketball is a team game that is greatly effected by the rules and the style of play. There's a lot more to it than individual talent. These results don't surprise me much.

I'm sure it's also influenced by how hungry one is. The USA has a target on its back, the $25k for a gold won't even begin to pay for the money they are dropping on their yatch and other distractions they are finding.

Agreed and I think they made a mistake by not having a facilitator at PG. Irving and Lowery are both scoring point guards. With so much talent on this roster the team would have been much better served IMO to have someone who could break down the defense and set these guys up. John Thompson made the same mistake back in the 80s and it cost the US dearly. Not sure who was available to fill the bill though. John Wall and Chris Paul weren't available if I remember correctly. But it's frustrating watching Irving and Lowery attempting contested layups with guys wide open on the wings, even when they make it.

I agree. I also think Billy has a point. In some interviews these guys seemed genuinely surprised at how tough the games were.

Serbia, after a decent start today, has quit. They are getting Slavinized. After they got 10 points down the body language and effort went in the tank.

Durant is awesome.

BTW...the ref who made that late foul call against Australia in the bronze game should be permanently banned, or exiled to the SWAC. Pathetic.

USA played great today, but the gold game was anticlimactic after many close games throughout the tournament. Really hard to watch at times with the very poor performance by Serbia. USA caused a lot of the Serbians bad play, but really Serbia did not come to play today.

Not sure what your major was or degree is but half is about twice as many as actually accurate.

That said. They are playing FIBA rules which is a markedly different game. The talent differential is huge and let's then win easily. Would have been much different with a pass first PG. Don't care about different (than U.S./NBA) rules or ball size or whatever. We should have had at most one game which we won by less than 10.

Talent differential is still marked.

that is true, a cursory look at the list of draftees by college does not readily identify guys like Buddy or Ben Simmons as international players. This is a new record eclipsing previous years.
