We can talk about Larry's wins and L's , but look at his $$$$$$
schedule Larry MUST make $$$ for all the other sports
His ROAD schedule has games against Ohio State- Miami
of Fla --Marquette--West Virginia--
Not sure of the total $$$'s but all non income sports at WCU
are happy and Larry and his kids are bleeding a little--
But Smiling

Don't hold your breath!

And Larry played nice teams when he was in Athens as well.

Yeah, that's some super scheduling. WCU hasn't won an out-of-conference road game against a team that wasn't 200+ in 6 years. And it hasn't toughened them up for conference play either. They haven't been a contender for Southern Conference regular season title since 2011. All it does it start them off with 6 losses to make up for. I'm all for playing the big boys but you can't just play them all on the road. All it does it get the fans that don't pay attention to sit up and take notice. But since the games are on the road those fans aren't going to see the game anyway. Play the big boys but only if they are willing to come here as well. Otherwise play them in neutral site tournaments and then schedule the best possible teams that will be willing to do home-and-homes.

Van is right. For an example much closer to home, just look at what all those money games did to Fiami. It brought in revenue but decimated a once proud program.

Thank you. We absolutely should not be doing the same. There's no value in playing a game like we did at the beginning of the Groce era at Kansas, where our team gets blasted by 30. None.

Would it be nice to have one more game against what everyone calls a "big name" opponent? Sure, it would, but the schedule is made, and we don't know who exactly they may have tried to schedule that didn't work out.

The only year I wish we could've scheduled like that was heading into 2012-2013. That team could've handled it. After playing in St. Louis against UNC in a tourney setting, a trip to a Big Ten arena wouldn't have been overwhelming.

Most years, though, I agree. No need to get flattened five or six times. There's no growth in that. Once? Sure.

That was the least competitive OU basketball game I've seen. A 40-minute KU poster photoshoot.

Pretty sure that was the year we got drilled by 30 at Memphis. Played with no heart and that team did not respect its head coach Jim Christian. Turned their backs to him and I was there to witness it. Then again JC showed his true colors too. Trust me, that team could not have handled another big-time atmosphere in December that year. They were completely lost with no leadership on the bench. Nice work JC, but glad you skipped town. Enjoy 2 more years max at BC.

You apparently weren't around to see OHIO get blasted 112–82 in the NCAA in 1970 by Notre Dame and Austin Carr. That set the standard for ineptness on the hardwood. Ironically, the year before this those Redchickens from Oxford beat the same UND team 63-60 in the tourney, with one regular poster here playing a key role in the Miami victory.

Eh. One bad stretch of that season. They played a 20-win Oklahoma team tougher. They won 14 games in the MAC.. They could've handled more top-tier games, culture clashing aside.

We've had this discussion a million times. If you don't play them on the road, you won't get to play them. They won't come here. You can't say "the year we went to Sweet 16 we should have scheduled them". It doesn't work that way. We should play three of those on the road each year. If we lose, so what? But I guarantee we won't win if we don't play the games. The players want to play those games.

Playing 2-3 of those games a year I'm on board with. More than that isn't worthwhile. I also think you have to be selective. You can't play a game like at Kansas, or at Duke all the time. There's no value in that. At Minnesota, or at Clemson is a different story. I'd be good with playing a road game at someplace like VCU, or Creighton with no return game.

This is actually a good example of where The Optimist's football post about sports data analysis could be useful for basketball: Analyzing the value of games relative to scheduling road games or home games and it's affect on RPI, SOS, and so forth.

Completely agree. Playing the big boys may mean blow-out losses at times like at Kansas, but it also gets you some big wins like ones we had at Virginia and Syracuse. And sometimes you get a power having an off year like when we took down OSU and the win at Chapel Hill. Perhaps play only one or two of them a year, but also play a tourney every year if it can be worked out. That way you often get to play top 100 teams on a neutral site. I saw us beat St. Johns in the opening round of the Rainbow Classic when they had a decent team, and some years before that I remember we beat a ranked UConn team in the semis there.

Sick of saying it, but to beat them you have to play them.

I'm all for playing the big boys just not completely on their terms. Neutral court, like the examples above, fine. Personally I think Toledo put together a schedule which is almost perfect* for a MAC team. The number in parentheses is their KenPom ranking from last year.

at St. Joes (43)
YSU (281)
at Wright State (146)
at Middle Tennessee State (119)
Evansville (72)
Middle Tennessee State (119)
UNC-Wilmington (83)
Green Bay (127)
Detroit (172)
at Marshall (147)
SELU (310)
Loyola-Chi (184)

With the exception of Youngstown State and Southeastern Louisiana every team is competitive and more than likely willing to give you a game at your place.

Edit: *Perfect for a MAC team means that it is within reason. A truly perfect schedule would be hosting Ohio State, Duke and a couple other big boys. Or playing two bigs on the road and two at home. But Thad Matta isn't walking through that door anytime soon so for our purposes perfect means something that could happen.

Van, those teams are solid and you make a good point. Milwaukee is a good example on this year's schedule. You don't have to go far to find those teams. I still think you need 2 or 3 on the road against P5.

I would be curious to know how many of those schools, besides say UK, Kansas, Duke, etc. even want to play Ohio? (or Akron, Toledo, etc) It's fun and easy for us to speculate, but we have no idea if they even want to play the better schools from a mid-major conference. I assume UK, Kansas, Duke, et al that are in the elite program category will play the MAC at home because they know they'll win. What about the bottom third of those conferences?

I like Van's post about UT's schedule. It looks a lot like what I would consider to be a really nice schedule for OUr Bobcats. In particular, I like playing solid regional opponents like Evansville, Detroit, and Wright State, and playing the best team from the CAA.

I would think they would as long as it's at their place. It would still be a win and we're typically going to have a good RPI. I would think neutral settings are a different story. We would have a chance at the upset and their fans would see it as a horrible loss. If you ever read some of the boards of the big boys they don't see a difference between us and Sacred Heart.

By the way, the MAC doesn't have one single home game against a Big Six school this season. Evansville is the conference's marquee home game.

[/QUOTE]I guess I would assume (getting myself in trouble here, I know) that Northwestern, Penn State, as examples, might view Ohio differently than Kentucky would.

Far cry from a few years ago when Ohio had Valpo, Umass, Northern Iowa coming to Athens - all in the same season. This would lead me to believe scheduling is gettin' tougher.
