For a minute, I thought I was on the football forum. There's a long thread there about how we are playing nothing but the dregs of college football. In the case of football, though, many of those weak teams are in the MAC, and we have little control over that part of the schedule. Here we are talking about non-conference games, and we do control that to a large extent. I remember last year that Saul said that the non-conference schedule would improve as we moved forward. Not sure I'm seeing that this year.
It's the same thing every year. Phillips, Christian, Groce, O'Shea whomever has been a coach has an interview where they say this is they year when they'll step up the schedule. Schedule then is out and its full of mid major schools with a justification that such and such school won its conference last year so its a great schedule. The power schools don't want anything to do with Ohio. Maybe if the team was a relevant, regularly in the NCAA field of 68 team instead of one that has only made the dance twice in the last decade they would play Ohio.

It's the same every year on this board, with people complaining about the non-conference schedule. Since it's a problem, I'm interested in hearing a solution. Tell me about your inside knowledge on improving scheduling for OUr program.

Also, do a little homework on how easy it is to be "regularly in the NCAA field of 68" when you're in a conference like the MAC. It's not quite the same as being bowl eligible, a team has to actually win something.

It was possible to build a program through TV. Gonzaga might be the last school that was able to make a name for it in athletics by TV exposure and capitalize on it with recruiting. Gonzaga was able to use that TV exposure to attract better home schedules. In MAC football there was matchmaking between NIU and CBSS to get some decent home games (SDSU, USF). With the oversaturation of TV I don't think its possible to be a darling like it was. Could it be possible to get CBSS to play matchmaker in basketball and get AAC schools into the Convo? Is that what Western Kentucky is a CBSS game?

You're being comically unrealistic.

I won't even get into the combination of luck, great coaching and recruiting required to become the "next Gonzaga." Gonzaga was able to build its mid-major dynasty with a combination of factors, several of which will never exist in Athens. A noteworthy population for starters - the Spokane CSA is almost 700,000. Athens County has a population of 65,000 and is literally bordered by the two least-populated counties in Ohio. Spokane has some Fortune 1000 companies. Athens has none. Gonzaga doesn't have any football (let alone FBS) sucking resources.

In an age when it was a status symbol to be on TV Gonzaga used it to their advantage in scheduling and making a name for the school. The whole concept of using athletic viability to generate donations is what drives university presidents to increase visibility for athletics. It worked for Clemson as an example because without that football team they're probably Marshall academiclly. In Ohio's case it brought in the donations for academics without the athletics that great because of school pride. The days when a school can be made on a football or basketball team are over but TV can still be valuable playing matchmaker. CBBS has the A10, AAC, Big East, MWC, CUSA and MAC. Why can't they set up a series with Ohio and a Big East team? It could work for a couple quality home games a year in the Convo which is all I am asking here.

Not having FBS football to be a drain on the Athletics budget is a big, big factor in this conversation. Apply the same logic to the Butler Bull Dogs, Xavier Mustketeers, and Dayton Flyers regionally. They invest money into a basketball program that makes them money because they don't have an FBS football program, which is a money loser for all but about 20 schools in the country.

Give Saul & Co. an extra $3-5mil a year, and they could buy home games against almost anyone they want to play. AND they could spruce up The Convo to the level everyone wants it to be at with scoreboards, etc. Instead, Ohio and the MAC spend that money on football. I'm not qualified to say whether or not it's worth it, but that's the way it is.

Wes, I think you make a fair point about Gonzaga and TV converage, but the lack of football program to spend on is a big, big factor for them, along with what Journalist said about metro area.

I'm not sure about the relationships on CBSSN, but the idea of combining forces with another mid-major conference or two for advantageous scheduling is a great idea. If we can have the ACC/B1G challenge, why not the same for mid-majors? The Horizon, MVC, and CAA would be good partners in my opinion. Ideally the A10 and AAC would, but I'm not sure they'd play ball. I know we're getting back to "Bracketbuster" in a way, but I'm talking about games played in Nov/Dec.

A factor, it seems to me, in our favor. Actually, two.

I think that the media (tv) like OHIO, view us favorably as a school that steps up and performs. NCAAs..a factor.

And, I think that they like BetterCallSaul for his track record and personality.

Looking forward to this season for sure.

Football brings people on campus and is good for the university. You're right in that if we didn't have it, we could elevate our basketball program.
