Dang. This just made the MAC a little bit easier to win.

Lists Nevada, Arizona, TCU, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Marquette, Iowa State and Miami as teams he's interested in per Jeff Goodman.

He's originally from Milwaukee so the Marquette/Wisconsin thing makes sense. The others?

Wow.

Wasn't looking forward to playing him the next couple years.

This puts Akron and Ohio alone in the top tier for next year IMO.

Buffalo still has a bunch of young talent still on the roster and supposedly has a pretty good class coming in. I wouldn't count out the Flying Bortzes just yet.

I'm not counting them out, but on paper I'd definitely knock them out of top tier.

If we lost our starting PG, I'd do the same. They have more a bit more depth at PG than we do, but it is still a huge blow to their chances to repeat. They are still very solid. Still have them above most of the West and probably the rest of the East except Kent.

This is funny because last year I remember you guys saying Bearden was mediocre and that losing Shannon Evans would be the death of Buffalo. Now this year Bearden is apparently the only thing keeping UB in the top tier of the entire conference.

Remember the 36 points that our freshman PG Massinburg put on you guys in Bearden's absence? Or the 60 points that Willie Connor put up in those 3 games? I think we're not only the top tier, we're still the favorite. Our depth is our biggest strength.

Spin it all you want but him leaving certainly isn't a positive for your team.

It isn't a good thing, that's for sure. I'm just saying that claiming Buffalo isn't even in the top tier of the MAC because of this is crazy. I can't say it surprises me in this conference though.

One opinion doesn't make the entire board. I still think the title runs through Buffalo and Akron, FOR SURE.

I'd put Ohio (and Akron) ahead of Buffalo in terms of favorites to win the MAC, but Buffalo still will be a contender.

Bearden is a big loss, but there's still a lot of talent on that roster.

I felt UB was the clear preseason favorite prior to hearing of the Bearden transfer. Now I would cautiously pick Ohio as the favorite slightly ahead of Akron and UB.

let me break down the time line for you-

- '14-'15 season- Bearden plays 29min/gm and averages 8.3pts on 38% shooting.

- '15 summer- someone describes Bearden as medicocre.

- '15-'16 season- Bearden plays 29min/gm and averages 13.7pts on 42% shooting.

- '15 summer- someone describes Bearden as being better than mediocre.

maybe, just maybe, opinions changed based on new information.

Why is he leaving? Buffalo certainly has a great nucleus returning and he would have played a staring role. Did something happen in Buffalo or is he just looking for a bigger stage and brighter lights?

Even before this he reminded me of Jeremy Fears . . .

I've been high on Bearden since Buffalo was recruiting him. I thought he was a fantastic grab for Buffalo and I think he will be dearly missed.

Do people turn against Bobby Hurley this season or next?
Hurley gets A TON of hate likely because he has been a jerk, but I think he deserves a little credit for winning the East last year.

I think Hurley recruited really well for Buffalo in year 1. Lamonte Bearden had a great group of offers including Saul at NDSU and they managed to steal Wigginton from us.
While I was disappointed that we lost Tariq, I felt Wiggonton was the guy who would have the most impact this year.

I think Hurley might be gone pretty quick from Buffalo.
Again... We lose Mr. Simmons, I'll rename the top tier of the East as Akron by itself.

Not sure about why, but Arkley tweeted this was not unexpected among those who closely follow MAC basketball. In fact his only surprise was that it was not sooner.

I had heard rumblings though some people in the department that he'd butt heads with the coaches in practice quite a bit and in general he was just a bit difficult to coach. They said way back during the MAC tournament that a transfer was somewhat likely. Why he waited so long though I couldn't tell you. I figured we were in the clear since it had been this long.

The sense I always got was that he's a kid with a lot of talent who thinks pretty highly of himself. The kid just wins championships though. Two back to back state titles in his junior and senior years of high school followed by 2 MAC championships in his first two years at Buffalo. Can't be too upset with a kid who helped bring so much success to the program. Buffalo will be weaker than previously thought but we're still a top 4 team in the MAC.

Thanks for the info BasketBull... Yeah, would agree that this knocks Buffalo down a peg but, considering the magic Oats worked last year, it's hard to definitively say how far...

I do like our chances this year in the MAC. Along with this news, the Zips will need to try and replace both McAdams and Kretzer who just happened to shoot .52% and .447% respectively from three over their careers against Ohio. (WOW!) Not only that, but they only turned the ball over 1.3 times a game in over 51.5 combined minutes on average this previous season. I don't think Akron fans realize how hard it will be to replace that efficiency.

I don't see this as weakening Buffalo very much, due to their depth. Bulls will be formidabull again.

Would love to see that thread if you can find it.

So I went back to see if I could find your mythical thread and couldn't. What I did find was us giving Lamonte Bearden perhaps a little too much respect. We did say that Shannon Evans would be a big loss but then went on to say that you still had a lot of young talent including Bearden. But at least you get to keep your mantle as the King of Revisionist History. In games where Bearden played fewer than 28 minutes last year the Bulls were 4-9. In games where he played at least 28 minutes the Bulls were 15-6. In the three games he missed to suspension the Bulls were 0-3 with the three losses coming by an average of 10 points. Those three games included all that great depth.

Bearden leaving is a great opportunity for the next man up but please don't act like it doesn't hurt.

I thought Buffalo played well, these guys will be good next year. Bearden & Massinburg will be as good of a duo as any the next 2 years. That is, if Bearden can stick around...he seems like a complete hot mess to me.
This is what I found in the game thread of the last game against Buffalo. Sometimes it gets old being so right all the time.
