At the risk of sounding like Jeff McKinney, this game could be tougher than we like to think. Southern made the Tournament last year (albeit the First Four) and returns a lot of talent. I expect a win and hope to see a dominant performance, but you never know early in the year against a decent team.

Someone needs to give a preview of Southern from the Blue Ribbon Yearbook. I can do so later. I don't know much about them yet, but I did see that they play GeorgiaTech a few days before we do, giving us something to talk about next Wed/Thurs.

It appears that Ohio, Southern, Sam Houston St., Tennessee Tech, & Georgia Tech all play a round robin against each other in early season games.

Right, it's part of the "tournament" that allows teams to schedule extra games.

They went on the road and beat Mississippi State and Wyoming last year. They weren't a great defensive team though which bodes well for us. No reason to believe this will be an easy game.

They also lost two of their top-3 scorers according to some things I've read.

Will Saul be able to give Simmons a little bit more of a blow this season? Who else can play some effective minutes at the point?

Dartis has greatly improved his handles over the summer. Gollon is out for the year but there should be time a personnel to get J Simm a blow. I remember our AAU coach starting every game telling the starters to "put em away early so everyone gets a run" We saw that the first game with walk ons off the bench with over 5 minutes left. I know guys who would still be nervous down to the 2 minute mark. Good to see Saul trusts his team to a different degree

Harley was the first backup at point guard for Simmons in last Saturday's scrimmage. Dartis also saw minutes at pt. guard in the game.

Re was a point guard before he hit the growth spurt.

At the risk of sounding like me, this could be a challenging game. Blue Ribbon picks them second in the SWAC, while Sporting News says third. Seems their backcourt is particularly strong, with the coach's son being their best guard.

Also, we had a hard frost overnight, and there will be abundant sunshine from a very low angle in the sky.

Be sure to clear your windshield before hitting the road today and have a good pair of sunglasses, I strongly recommend polarized lenses, for the drive. Especially all of us driving west after the game.

FIRST HALF

The Good:

Who's that skinny guy in Tony Campbell's uniform?

Culver and Carter are nice. Culver might have a solid career at OHIO, based on the first half..

Unselfish on offense.

The Not-So-Good:

Southern getting too many rebounds on their offensive end.

Would be nice to see a more evident commitment to defense such as we put down on their second last possession of the half. DEFENSE

Also good...

1. When Tone and Jaaron had foul trouble we didn't lose a beat..in fact..were just as good if not better. Culver is going to electrify our crowds. Carter is so fundamental. Laster looks more physical and DT filled in admirably for Tone. I love our depth. Jordan looks more comfortable at point. And Block has given us nothing offensively. I feel like we don't need Tone and Jaaron to lead us every night. I think we have so much more depth.

Doesn't seem to be Ohio's fault. All of ESPN3 is down right now. Twitter is going crazy

Tone and Simmons in early foul trouble and we showed poise and depth. Call me crazy, but I'm kind of glad to see how we react with those guys on the bench early in a game so soon into the season. Totally different team from a year ago. And I can't get over Campbell's physique....dude needs to get a ton of credit for putting in the work. #SaulBall #Year3
