Would have been a great day for a home football game in Athens, right Alan? Enjoyed walking the campus before catching some basketball instead.

Fearleon, like you, I wouldn't be too concerned with KK's 0-for-9 today if it wasn't for his disappointing shooting last season. Not sure what he gives the team if he's not hitting from deep.

Culver and Carter are going to earn a lot of minutes as frosh. Culver is a long-limbed athlete and Carter has the outside shot to go with the ability to score around the rim.

Overall it was a very good day in the Convo to see hoops and meet with friends we haven't seen for awhile.

Women did a nice job vs Thomas More.

The men's team did a good job for stretches against Rio Grande. But I don't think we were exceptionally focused at times. Maybe it's hard to be focused against a team like Rio Grande. Usually, Rio is a decent team with decent talent, but they are only returning one starter. This may be one of weakest Rio teams I've seen in a long time, though they will probably get better with experience.

We missed a ton of open shots. This could have been a 50 point game easily.

I was disappointed that the last eight minutes of the game turned into garbage time. Both teams launching shots, not running offense, etc.

Jason Carter is going to be the real deal. Smart player, knows where to position himself on the court, has good post moves and three point shot. Sound defensively. I'm not sure about your "baby fat" comment, Alan! : ) Plus, he missed several free throws though I expect that to be an aberration.

Culver is really going to help us. Quick and long defensively. He needs to do a lot of work on his outside shot. Plus, he got caught up in the garbage time and put up some bad shots in the last eight minutes.

As Alan said, very good crowd size today.

Jeff, agreed one one count about Carter. Having seen him play on numerous occasions I'm not certain on the "baby fat" comment either. After the two games I saw him play last season, I remarked in his recruiting thread that "he needs to get in the gym and shoot free throws..." That said, his work on the boards, commitment to defense and court awareness are gonna make him a fan fave...

Carter looked very good today. Tony seemed noticeably quicker with his new shape, Kenny couldn't throw it in the ocean today.
This looks like could be a very good year.

Guys by baby fat what I was referring to was the fact that many if not most bigger guys coming in to college and really don't have a very well developed upper body or arm strength. Tony was like that as was Doug. Now look at them after some time in the weight room. I think you'll see the same development in Carter over the next few years. When Setty was a senior, he was very well cut.

I agree and think Baby Fat was just a poor choice of words. Treg was skinny and added muscle. Carter is a freshman who will certainly benefit from weight room and mold himself.

I wasnt able to be there yesterday. Can someone who was there compare Carter and Culver to former Bobcats? I imagine Culver to be a more athletic Rico? Carter a more fundamental and tougher Ivo? Right or wrong?

Culver is athletic and more of a slasher than Ricardo, He is way longer but not as thick and a little less likely to make toughness plays, instead, relying on his speed and court awareness. Rico somtimes had his body going a different way than his brain was telling him to go... I think Culver is kind of a less polished but more athletic Steven Coleman. It wil be interesting to see if he gets the reality that he needs to go to the rack instead of trying to shoot that (as the players would say) "broke ass" jumper. He needs a lot of work on shot mechanics from what littel i Have seen of it. Exciting player and a heck of a quick defender.

Carter is smarter and a better "basketball player" than Ivo. More fundamental, more controlled and better ball sense and way far ahead with BBIQ and knowledge of his opportunities to contribute at this point. He is not as big or wide as IVO and a bit less of an athlete. Probably not going to have as much explosive plays and wow! factor as Ivo but will be less frustrating and ultimately more satisfying to everyday fans. He is going to be a good talent as he developes over the years. He looks like he is a gym rat and is willing to put in time efficiently in the gym to get the most out of his abilities. Not the type to watch highlight reels and go to the gym to try and mimic those, more apt to look at his own game weakness' and bolster those. More like a Kretzer type player with a lot more versatility and court awareness/ability and one heck of a defender. He is just a bit taller than Block but has really good post footwork, good back to the basket skills and can play both sides on the perimeter as well.

Borna's got this right, but Stevie Fresh had a smoothness to his game while I thought Culver looks more athletic but less smooth. And I sure hope they work on those mechanics as the "hitch" in his shot is going to drive me mad if I have to watch it for 4 years. Even from the FT line, where he also doesn't set his feet. Carter on the other hand had very impressive fundamentals, and a confidence with his footwork that I haven't seen from a freshman in a long time. Ok, he's going to be facing tougher D but he was impressive yesterday.

I like the idea of a "Kretzer type player." I hope he lights it up against Akron the way Kretzer did against us.

Very well said. Culver's shot mechanics worry me a little, too. I cringe when I see shots with that hitch, but in warmups he was nailing a lot of jumpers. He looks like a kid that's going to cause defensive havoc, though. He was close to multiple steals on Saturday, not sure if he was credited with any. Carter looked very good. Something else that impressed me was how well he handled the ball in the open floor off a steal. He didn't complete the and-1, but for a kid his size to handle the ball in the open floor that well was impressive to me.

I really hope what we saw from KK was an aberration, but after last season's streakiness, I have my doubts. I hope he proves me wrong, because we need him to be a consistent threat.

Re: Culver - I envision him as a Nick Harney type player for us with his length, athleticicm, and defensive skills.

After watcing this game, I actually can see a lineup of Simmons, Culver, Laster, KK, and Tony depending on the matchups that allows for two of the better defenders on the wings with three of the best offensive players on the team blended together at the same time.

I like the potential combinations this year's group is going to have. It's going to be another fun year to watch!

It's been a little while since I was this excited about two freshmen. Last year I knew we had some potential but I didn't know what to expect from Block, DT, Gollon, Dozier and Darty. This year there are guys saying "Carter will be MAC Player of the Year someday" and Saul saying that Culver will disrupt guys and actually was solid against Jaaron in the offseason. This is what we were missing last year...some bench depth. It doesn't matter if Block, Culver or Carter starts, having the two that don't come off the bench with Laster and DT along with Khari with his experience --- very excited!
