He's from Tennessee and has no ties to Ohio. Why would he consider us? Not to mention the fact that we don't have any scholarships open for next year.

But he's from he South and as we know everything good comes from the South and everything great comes from Tennessee in particular. Now who are we kicking off the team?

there's a reason this kid has left two different teams...

It's pretty clear Saul tries to avoid kids who are problems...

This looks like it would be subtraction by addition.

I'll pass!!! No way do I want him and his troubles, and besides, this team is perfectly balanced right now. No way am I risking losing that over a one and done kid.

I trust Saul's eye for quality players.

I heard a lot of people dismiss Kaminski when we brought him in. The situations are not exactly the same, but recall Kaminski was also dismissed from a major program with no explanation other than a violation of "team rules" which could literally be anything. If Saul thought Nichols was a quality fit on and off the court, I'd be all for it. I'm not sure Nichols is a great fit on the floor. He CERTAINLY has talent but Saul seems to favor big guys who have range and Nichols doesn't take many 3's.

I don't understand why so many have this mindset of instantly dismissing kids who transfer. Yeah, we've had duds like Rio Adams. We've also picked up some amazing young men like Treg Setty and Walter Offutt via transfer.

T.O., you have a point, and I too support transfers if they're good kids. I do not support signing kids with a lot of baggage.

Funny how things change. Groce is now in his ninth year as a head coach. Someone asked him about Kipper Nichols, a Cleveland kid who transferred from Tulane to Illinois and will be eligible second semester.

If you have followed Illinois, you know that Groce brought in several knuckleheads. He did so here, too. Bassett was the textbook definition of a knucklehead.

Anyhow, in talking to reporters, Groce went on about what a good fit Nichols is, then said something to the effect that as he's gotten older, gotten more experience coaching, he's come to realize how important it is to get kids who are "good fits". In other words, he's tired of the drama and the problems he's had to deal with when he recruits knuckleheads...

Recruiting is an imperfect process, and I am certain every coach makes mistakes with kids who are problems on and off the court. But it appears Saul does everything he can to avoid them.

As we digress in a typical BA tradition.... Groce's wins and losses in the recruiting wars and keeping track of those... my takeaway is the transfers ...save for AB have not been his problem..... the kids recruited originally Nunn, Black, Goard, Kinney, Horne, MoPears, etc have been the downfall with judgement errors and team chemistry. There were those like Harris who never made the jump but they were not deleterious. The transfers like Walt, Jon, Ekey, etc have been decent personalities despite any history good or bad. There are probably a few I have left off that are examples of good and bad but I think the transfers were not the problem looking back save for AB at either program. I am happy JG is looking over his shoulder and has learned from the history...and is still swinging for the fences. Does not hurt to have an AD checking your every move to assure you clean up the program.

Kip may not be the brightest bulb in the box but he seems to not be a negative like some of the kids recruited out of HS.

Not saying this fellow from TN would be good or bad but remembering our history from TOS forward we have seen a huge change from the slashed tires and "going home for a funeral" that was here a decade ago. Ohio as a program is in a very good spot. Kids like each other, no knuckleheads and not much drama. WIth the current staff in place and the spots we have to fill I think we are in great shape going forward. Saul and staff is pretty awesome in that regard

He's transferring from Virginia. Ya know, the ACC.

Memphis was the 2 schools ago school.

You just said the problem right there. I'm okay with transfers but once you put the statement "two schools ago" in there then that's sending up all kinds of red flags. Just what we need, a guy that's great at burning bridges and showing up for practice drunk on multiple occasions including after he had already been suspended for it. And so what if he transferred from the ACC. We've had players transfer in from the power conferences before and be complete busts. But just as important as that, we don't have any open scholarships. We would have to kick someone off the team. No thanks.

I don't think anyone dislikes transfers. It's about fit. Plus, as OUVan as already pointed out this would be his 3rd school. Red flags start going up.
