Remember when coach was telling us we are a better defensive team than LY? Remember that? It was just prior to the start of this season.
Where is that improvement? I haven't seen it.
If there was improvement we would not have lost 3 of our road games.
Our record would be more like 9-1 at the worst.
If we can't improve on D than I am thinking our record will not be as good as LY.
Defense is a key to winning on the road as a team usually doesn't shoot as well on the road as at home.
We have 1 more cup cake OOS game before the tuff schedule begins.

Basic stats:

Currently ranked 103rd in the country in defensive scoring.

Currently ranked 74th in the country in defensive FG percentage.

Currently ranked 104th in the country in defensive 3pt FG percentage.

Currently ranked 313th in the country in steals per game.

Currently ranked 170th in the country in rebounding margin.

Ken Pom numbers:
83rd in Adjusted Defensive Efficiency (point allowed per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponents)

284th in Luck...which I thought was interesting and wonder how this is even calculated.

Kind of all over the board for the small sample size (10 games) when a lot of other teams have played 12 or 13 already. And truthfully, the offense hasn't been it's normal efficient self, which would lead to better defense.

Thing I'm more concerned with?

Currently ranked 246th in Free Throw percentage. This team has too many good shooters to be that bad at the free throw line.

The notion that this team, with essentially the same parts as last year's "There's a Hole In My Bucket" defense, was going to take a giant leap forward defensively was too optimistic. I thought they could get better, but this team needs to outscore people.

Agreed. Anyone who doesn't notice the improvement in defense isn't watching the same games I am. Our inconsistency on offense has been the frustrating part IMO. We aren't as good defensively as our 2012 team but we've made big strides.

Amen Van, and Jeff. Seems to me that the losses at WKU and Iona had more to do with the offensive end than the defensive end.

Stats don't lie, but emotions do. These are stats against teams in the 100's-300's RPI wise.

Doesn't kenpom take strength of opponent into consideration? If so, it's worth looking at.

Three point performance at WKU.

Our D was pretty good at WKU; we can't win shooting 27% from three, especially when we put up 29 shots. We couldn't buy a three in this game. We kept getting open looks.

And went 7/21 against Iona.

And 9/29 against Marshall.

As some great philosopher once said "WIN BY THE 3 DIE BY THE 3."
We need balanced scoring. If we need the 3 to win games we are not a well rounded team and therefore will be too 1 dimensional.

We were 236th in Defensive efficiency last year.
We are 84th in Defensive efficiency this year.

That is a huge improvement and it seems that some people are just happy to write their own narrative without anything to back it up.

If anything the Marshall game was an outlier, and you have to remember that Marshall plays at the 5th fastest tempo in the nation. Take a look at some of their other points scored this year: 111 vs Toledo, 98 vs W Carolina, 88 vs Akron, 91 vs Cincinnati, 106 vs Pittsburgh

They are 7-0 at home, 0-6 on the road.

All of KenPom's rankings are adjusted. Basically, an estimate of the defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions) a team would have against the average D-I offense. The current average for college basketball is around 70 possessions per game. So it adjusts if you play bad/good offenses/defenses. Last year, Ohio gave up 106.9 points per 100 posessions. This year, they're at 98.4. So it's a pretty good apples-to-apples comparison. 

In the Marshall and Iona games, Ohio's defense allowed more than 1 point per possession. Against Marshall, Ohio allowed 1.2 points per possession. That's above Marshall's adjusted average of 1.12 (31st in the nation). Against Iona, Ohio gave up 1.11 per possession. That's above Iona's adjusted average of 1.048 (115th nationally).

Against WKU, the problem was offense. Ohio scored .88 points per possession. It's worst of the year. Well under its average of 1.029 (163rd nationally). They actually held WKU to .89 points per possession, under its average of .999 (224th nationally).
