"I need to be mad about something so, darn it, I guess I pick this."

Are we really complaining about something that nearly every other D1 team does? What difference does it make that it counts or is an exhibition? We have 13 days between the WKU game and our first MAC game so the timing is perfect. Nobody is in town anyway so it's a good time to knock the rust off. And the D1 teams that would be willing to travel to Athens, Ohio on December 30th you guys would be complaining about as well.

Agreed. The last 5 years of opponents around the first of the year in order:

Urbana
UC Riverside - surprised they came this far for this date
UNC Wilmington - actually a pretty good game
Longwood - the complaints were loud for this one if I recall
@Oklahoma 12/29, Marshall 1/5
Kennesaw St 12/30, Robert Morris 1/2
Norfolk St 12/30, Robert Morris 1/2

It seems that the need to be mad about something and post about it is becoming more frequent in this forum.
You cannot complain about anyone of these games when compared to Urbana. Anyone trying to defend these guys has never seen an Urbana athletic event.

As mentioned before I have seen them and the boarded up campus they have. Football stadium and basketball gyms are the worst in college sports. My friend who is a supervisor of basketball officials tells me they have to take their own heaters to Urbana for games as their is no heat is the officals room of the gym. This is the third so called game they have played against a d1 team this year. Not hard to figure out why they are playing so many considering the financial condition of the school.

I wasn't really complaining, nor really intending to compare them. I guess I was trying to point out that in general the non-conference games around the first of the year are generally not the most exciting match-ups.

I'm not going to get too worked up over it, but essentially this is a scrimmage so we don't get too rusty with 2 weeks off.

If the starters play more than 10 minutes I'll be shocked and disappointed.

Might as well get the shock and disappointment out of the way today or tomorrow so you can enjoy game day a little more.

How much are we paying Urbana for this game?
Any thing more than actual costs of travel needs to be scrutinized. Who made that deal?
We better not play down to our competition and only win by 6-8 in an ugly game, and then hear on this board any W is a good W.

What are the odds that Crabtree has a 30-pt night?

IUPUI beat these guys by 40+. Wright State beat them by 50+. I'm expecting a similar result.

First, I'm not actually going to watch this scrimmage, so nothing to worry about in regards to enjoying it or not. We're going to "win" by 30+. Walk-ons should all near double figures.

Urbana couldn't beat Athens HS. Why should I expect to be shocked and disappointed?

Do you honestly think either a) it's going to be a close game b) this event (hard to call it a game really) is anything more than a scrimmage for our guys against someone other than the scout team or c) due to a & b, it's worth it to risk injury or bad habits for any of the starters to play more than enough time to take a significant lead in the 1st half and maybe to the first media timeout of the second half in order to get some work in (i.e. 10ish minutes total)?

It's just 1 game like this, not a big deal. Excited for the bench players and especially the walk-ons to get a chance to get regular playing time.

You should expect to be shocked and disappointed because the starters will likely play more than the 10 minute threshold you put out there. I wasn't trying to say anything more than that.

I'm planning to go to the game. I'm going to enjoy it with the family. I'm less concerned about the opponent, results, and minutes played than taking Mom & Dad to The Convo for a game, and seeing some Bobcat friends in the process.

Good opportunity to get a big chunk of quality minutes from Culver, Carter, Laster, and Taylor before conference play. Keep the starters sharp.

I believe very strongly that, if we have emphasized defense since our last outing, we have a VERY good chance of escaping with a victory.
There will be bonus points to anyone who can name 20 percent of the fans present for this debacle.
BTW, check out who the other MAC teams played (and defeated) tonight. Let's compare their conference schedule tune ups to ours.

Look back over the entire OOC schedules of MAC teams. We are only playing one of these games against lower competition. Look at EMU, NIU.

Agreed. It's not a huge deal. It counts for nothing (not RPI, not MAC - nothing). So call it what it is, a scrimmage. No harm in that.

Because those are the beacon programs we should aim to mimic and some day aspire to be, right?

No re emulate. But the point of comparison is that they have the same problems and challenges putting together a schedule as we do. Main issue is the MAC requirement re number of home games.

I think it's a matter of a D1 school needing a pre-conference tuneup but not able to schedule another D1 school, for one reason or another. The D1 school can treat it as a regular season game, since they're only allowed one exhibition game a year, but it doesn't count toward RPI. The only real risk is injury to a key player. The lower division school can call it an exhibition, since they don't have the one-a-year restriction. There are lots of other similar games on the D1 schedule in the next seven days. Some schools play two.

Down 31-27 with 2 minutes left in first half? See panic button....push panic button. Without Campbell, this should still be a 25 point win.

According to Arkley, he was limited in practice with a sore knee.

Taylor got 11 tonight according the the box score. Urbana must be pretty bad.

Not to be a jerk about it, but after watching him play up close at WKU, he seemed slow and with very little of the footwork a D-1 big guy needs - even a backup. And his free throws were absolute bricks. This is the guy who will be starting center next season? SMH

I agree greencat and I'm not being a jerk about it either. Many believe he's the starting center next year. I said a few weeks ago in another thread that he's not a 20-28 minute guy. Unless he shows great improvement, he's a 10-12 minute guy. I got hammered by some for saying it, but I'll ask again...where are the points in paint coming from next year? Can compare it to Stevie Taylor. He wasn't starting point guard material, but that was only option when DJ left. Stevie was a 12-15 minute guy and I got blasted for saying that. I hope we are both wrong about DT.
