With a loss to Winthrop and a 30+ point loss to WVU, the latest Fire Groce thread has hit the Illini message board. That didn't take long.

I'm shocked he can't recruit better there. He would easily get another mid major job if they fired him.

I hope things get better for Coach Groce; he's a great coach despite what's happening in Illinois. Alas, sometimes the grass isn't greener.

As I have written in other threads, Groce has tended to recruit more than his share of knuckleheads (remember he brought Armon Bassett to Ohio), and he's paid the price. Kendrick Nunn was a top 25 player out of high school and I believe was all big 10 last year, but got kicked off the team after pleading guilty to misdemeanor battery. He's not the first kid to whom Groce has shown the door...

He has indicated in interviews that he's changed his philosophy. Kipper Nichols from Cleveland becomes eligible in December after transferring in last year, and Groce has raved about what a good fit he is on and off the court.

It may be too late. The Illini win total has gone down in each of his four years, so he probably has to make a big splash this year to make up for lost time. I did not see the W Va game, but the stats were terrible. Couldn't shoot, couldn't hit free throws, etc...

No NCAA berth and he's gone. Don't fault him for leaving...made money. Now I wonder where he'll end up next?

His recruiting class for next year is very good. The sophomore group is also pretty good.

Groce did a lot here, he's been pretty much a total failure in so many ways at Illinois that it's amazing the new AD there retained him. It's pretty tough to look at what he's done there and believe that he will survive another year. His buyout is apparently $400K a year thru the 2018 season so it's really nothing in the bigger picture.

I have no real idea why he didn't do well there, but he will IMO land on his feet somewhere, he's a pretty good coach it seems. I do have to wonder if much of his success here has to do with having Cooper-sort of like catching lightning in a bottle. Whatever, it's been interesting following his career and wondering where he'll end up next.

Needs to win at least first round as well.

I don't think Groce "paid the price" in the case of Armon unless the price was averaging 30 ppg in the postseason and upsetting a 3-seed. Sure, Bassett ended up throwing a punch or something at Courtside and couldn't play the last year, but the damage was already done.

Do you think Groce makes that trade again? I'd vote yes.

Knuckleheads eventually catch up with you. Yeah, sometimes you can win with them...more often than not, they eventually do you in. Maybe not in those words, but Groce has generally admitted that he's now emphasizing recruiting kids who are "good fits" on and off court.
