Despite a 3-1 record tonight, the MAC so far has not performed as well as expected in non conference games. Part of the reason is that Miami, BGSU and WMU have played so many early games.

Akron lost at Youngstown St, while Buffalo lost by more than 30 at Xavier.

We will see if this turns around soon.

Sagarin rankings have the MAC East 12th and West 13th, so not too bad, but much closer to the teams below (Colonial 14th, Ivy 15th, Conference USA 16th) than above (Missouri Valley 9th, Mount West 10th, West Coast 11th).

Ohio leads the MAC by one spot over Akron.

Another bad night for the MAC last night. Kent State lost to a bad George Mason team, CMU and Toledo got pounded by St. Bonaventure and Middle Tennesee St respectively. Toledo rallied late to make the score respectable but it was a blowout for most of the game. Akron salvaged the night with a win at home against Georgia Southern. Need to rebound with the 6 games on tap tonight.

Here's a breakdown of how the MAC has fared by tiers of competition per KenPom

KenPom ranked 1-100

0-7

KenPom ranked 101-200

7-8

KenPom ranked 201-300

8-9

KenPom ranked 300+

5-0

Not Rated (non-D1 schools)

8-0

Overall the conference is 28-24 but against D1 competition it's only 20-24. Probably the most distressing sign is the conference is only 8-9 against teams that are ranked between 201 and 300. The conferences "Marquee" win so far is our win over Georgia Tech and nothing else is really that close.

As of today, the MAC ranks #20 in RPI. It's 12/13 in the Sagarins.

If the RPI doesn't improve, it'll be very tough for Ohio and Akron to maintain a strong RPI during conference play.
