Good for Coach and Nicole...

I am tired of the whole Jimmy V thing.

I am sorry Valvano is gone and he died an awful death.

But the whole "Jimmy V Week" has gotten out of hand, particuarly in the deification of Valvano. As a coach, he was no saint. That's OK, no one is. But this "Jimmy V Week" stuff goes out of its way to present him as this shining ideal. Thanks, but I can do without hearing his "don't ever give up speech" again...and again...and again...

Don't listen to the speech, but please give to a good cause.

Also, helping old ladies across the street. Why do we need to help them? They should be able handle it on their own or at least get one of those motorized scooters.

Ouch! That speech speaks to people. In and out of basketball. It was amazing and a message for players, coaches, parents - everybody. Don't go all Grinch to early. And no Bah Humbug!

I too have been surprised by the deification of Jimmy V. I certainly support the cause and applaud the coaches who participate in the fundraising, but Valvano was, at best, a renegade from an ethics standpoint. His player graduation rates were right down there with Huggy Bear.

He definitely had his flaws but he was very well liked amongst his peers and he was a great salesman for the game. Plus he was a walking talking soundbite which makes him a saint in the eyes of ESPN. His "Never Give Up" speech came at the inaugural ESPY awards and he passed away a month later. It's almost a perfect storm. And it is a worthy cause. That being said I change the channel during all the endless stories because I guess I have no soul.

I'm this camp. I hear what's being said when it comes to the 'deification' because it overlooks the negatives. But the speech and the message are powerful and positive. I look forward to it every year.

Sometimes it is best to say nothing.

I am a fan of Nicole Phillips(and of course her husband!)

+1. In the few times I've spoken with them, they've impressed me as two great people, who are also raising a good family. I've said it before, they are a fine addition to the Athens County and Ohio University communities. And that has nothing to do with basketball.
