I agree. Though we had problems on offense, the more glaring issue was defense. Clearly ours is still a work in progress. This should help Saul make the point about the importance of good communication and footwork on D. I am hoping we will look back on this game as a turning point in our season as we double down on our defensive effort.

I am still waiting for Jaaron to take over a game like he did last year. He seems a bit passive. And I am waiting for the Block breakout game. The kid has so much energy and gives the intangibles but two straight rough games do not look good. Maybe Block should come off the bench again and give us a spark like he used to. Culver can "D" up or perhaps infuse Carter into that 3-4 spot and let Kenny drift a bit. Carter looks like he is already shaking off the freshman fears and really is coming into his own. By MAC time he is going to be a very important piece like Dartis was last year.

That was a pretty disheartening effort all the way around. I think we'll be a streaky shooting team all year, so the low shooting percentage doesn't worry me too much. Marshall's extremely high shooting percentage does. Clearly a terrible defensive effort. I agree that Marshall is good and there's no shame in losing to them on the road, but that game exposed some weaknesses.

So far this season, some key guys seem to have regressed, the bench is not producing much, we continue to rely on jump shots and the D failed its first big test.

After all that negativity, I'm still excited about the potential for this season. All that bad stuff is very correctable and this young team is stocked with talent. It's better to have games like this in November than in March, and I think we'll see fewer duds as the season wears on.

I'd say anytime our point guard goes 4-17 from the field it's going to be a loss. Hopefully he'll be back on track next game. Might have been trying to do too much in the second half from the way Russ was calling it.

I am not concerned like I have been in past years with this loss. Marshall is going to be a tough contender in their conference and Ryan Taylor really did make a difference for them and would have made the OSUcks game a bit tighter. When you look at the array of things he does for his team it adds up. We will be fine and I think a blowout win over Bryant and Timmy O would be a great way to get back on track. The rest of the non-con I see Western K and Iona presenting challenges which is good. I hate that we open with Western M in MAC play. Wilder and Haymond along with their two big guys will give us fits but ultimately I think we have a better top 8 than any other team and Laster is a pretty good ninth.

I don't think too much weight should be put on that game. I watched much of the first half and it was just one of those games (plus they didn't have Ryan Taylor) much like our first half against Sam Houston St.

Hopefully just a blip on the radar. Giving up 98 points, given the struggles thea team had defensively last year, is troubling, however.

As a follow up to my previous post, the only good thing about the Marshall game was that it occurred in November. If that't the only large bump in the road, we will do just fine. Although, I hope the sting of that game lingers for a while. I hope that is the 2016-17 season mulligan!

Two comments:

1. I watched the C-USA webcast. I had no technical problems as some have reported, but I thought it was one of the worst webcasts I've watched in several years -- replays over the top of live scoring plays, an announcer who kept second guessing the officials and was wrong in almost all cases, no way to see the score on the screen, etc., etc.

2. It seemed to me that Dan D'Antonio did an excellent job of scouting us. Their defensive alignments and spacing were optimized to stifle our offense.

What's the point of not challenging yourself.....and going 26-4 and still have to win three nights in Cleveland against...

...challenging yourself....finishing 20-10 and still having to win three nights in Cleveland.

2012-13 schedule, even with the losses, was fun to watch Ohio play that competition. This season just feels like a pre-cursor leading up to the inevitable three nights in Cleveland.

Only way MAC gets an at large is two teams with strong RPI and serious votes in top 25 polls. Only way we insure we are in is winning in Cleveland. We have some improving to do to be on track for that. We can't be a 3 point made/% one trick pony. Need to execute in the paint (that opens up 3 scoring opps - Paint, FT's, and 3's). AND - Consistent solid D - 30++ minutes of it every game.

Agree with most of this. However, if we only have 1 regular season loss and lose in MAC title game....I don't see how you can leave OHIO out at 30-2. But let's be realistic, we are losing more than one regular season game. 2-3 losses with this schedule and a loss in Tourney final won't get it done. But first...how bout we win a tough road game at Iona!

Marshall may not be in the CBI after all, they just dropped to 6-4 after losing to Akron. They are who we thought they were.

Allen, you and I see the world very differently. I saw the game on TV. I thought Marshall gave a great effort. Plus, they played without the injured Ryan Taylor. They are going to be just fine.

I would say I hope so for our sake, but we are going to win the MAC. Jeff you may be right on this one.
