This is great news. Only concern is does this mean we lose Russ and Rob's audio?
Honestly, has always been the biggest thing for me. I want to listen to them during every game. I've always found that playing them through my phone on the TuneIn app and muting the TV works well.

I generally do the same thing, though syncing it up is a challenge sometimes.

I might be in the minority here, but I hope that they do not use Russ and Rob. They are good and I like them, but my reasoning is below.

My educated guess is that this would not have been possible without some heavy lifting by other departments(This was mentioned in the article). Those departments will be doing this to predominantly offer real world experience for the students involved. Some of that important experience is having students call the game action. This is currently being done with a few sports at OU, but calling these games would clearly be the highest priority for students.

I think at OU, we want to do these things the right way. Student dollars fund the program, so the program should do everything in its power to allow students to be involved. We have seen this be very successful in just about every department in OU Athletics, so it should continue here.

All this crap about cable/satellite alternatives confuses the crap out of me, so I ignore it all and just continue to bend over and overpay for a crapload of channels I don't use just to make sure I can watch/DVR whatever the hell I want.

Students used to do the color on football games with Dick Schorr back in the day. While it is a nice learning experience it was also sometimes hard to listen to. There is plenty of opportunity for students to call high school games in the area.

While I would like PBP to go to students, I would like color commentary from former players. Jordan Thompson or Ahmona Maxwell for football? Nick Kellogg (if he's not in Europe) for basketball? We need a way to keep  players and a sense of history connected to the program. And who knows? Maybe we launch some TV/radio careers.

I like former players doing PBP as long as they sound like they belong. Sometimes we hear guys that seem to be there for name value only.

That said, I fully agree with you Ted on keeping former athletes connected with the programs better. I'd love to see more common occurrences of former guys in Athens for whatever the occasion.

I could be wrong, but I think one of the stipulations with this deal is that ESPN doesn't want students serving as the on-air talent for these ESPN3 broadcasts.

I'm ok with a student doing play by play on these as long as he/she knows that Antonio Campbell is not pronounced "Camp--bell".

This is a good idea in theory but how would we pay for them? Would they want to do it for free?

They're going to have to pay PBP person as well. We're only talking a few football games and maybe 15 basketball games. Find some former athletes in the Columbus area that can fit this in with their day job.

Thanks Van and others for your insight... It is so nebulous and difficult to figure out that, I will just wait until the first broadcast, (Ladies Volleyball) to reverse engineer my plan of attack.
My guess is I will be using my sisters cable box with a sports package and Slingbox it or, SlingTV with a sports package using a VPN based, if possible, somewhere in Ohio.

Does anybody remember the 1980 football season? One of my roommates (won't mention his name) did the color commentary that season and he completely froze up and we had a season full of dead air other than Schorr. He had done tons of high school games (pbp) for WOUB and had done well to earn the shot but when the Bobcat games started he just froze. It was painful. Another of my roommates (I lived with 4 radio/TV and 1 journalism major) did it the next year and did very well but having students do it is a very risky proposition.

Personally I'll be very bummed when Russ and Rob are gone. I know they aren't for everyone but I love their broadcasts.

I was once doing pbp of a game and the guy next to me could only repeat back the sentence I just said to him, but in a different tone.

"Joey Joe Joe Junior Shabadoo on the jet sweep, for a three yard gain on first down."

"Brian, that was a jet sweep for three yards."

"We've arrived at a big juncture of this game. Sweatstain College needs a stop."

"Sweatstain really needs a stop, Brian. This is a big point in the game."

"I'm going to murder you live on the air by wrapping this cord around your big, dumb neck."

"He's going to murder me live on the air with the mic cord, folks."

All this talk of pronunciations reminds me of Bobcat legends Leon Tillman and Jerome Washington.

Personally, I find it repulsive their jerseys have not been retired.

I just cut the cord and bought the blue/orange package on sling tv. I live in Cleveland and am going to install an antenna to pick up local network tv stations, as that was the only gap in sports that I could find. You get the redzone channel which was the main reason I stayed with Directv. We have had SLing a week and I am kicking myself for not switching sooner. Picture is fine and sports packages give me most everything else I had before for a fraction of directtv price

Do you have a DVR solution? I need DVR so I can record NFL off over-the-air channels.

Seems like Tivo would work well. If Tivo had support for Sling, they would have a single product out of the box that would be really nice.

I haven't seen this anywhere - did we ever learn who would be doing the announcing on the ESPN3 broadcasts for men's basketball?
