Ohio doesn't make Elton's MAC top five going in to conference play, but 5-7 Western does. The Broncos, handicapped by losing Connor Tava for the season, haven't played very well in most of their games. But they pass Elton's "eye test" as a MAC contender, while Ohio doesn't.

Elton Alexander, columnist and writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Does some good work, but leaves me scratching my head sometimes.

Elton doesn't pass my smell test. His columns usually stink.

He can't see for crap anyway. He said the winner of the Ohio-Akron football game would win the MAC East. How did that eye test pan out for him?

I'll be shocked if the man judging teams by the "Eye Test" has seen any of the teams play except for possibly Akron and Kent. Not sure how you can state that any five teams have separated themselves from the top 9 or 10. If I were forced to write it I would conclude that it was Akron and then slightly behind them a big sticky glob of 8 or 9 teams. He has Eastern at #1 (I'm sure so everyone wouldn't call him a homer again) with a 5-4 record against D1 teams and all four losses by double digits (2 by 30+).

He may have been at the Cleveland State vs Ohio game. CSU has played five MAC teams so he may have seen some of those games.

He wrote the MAC preview for the Sporting News so his opinions are respected. But from time to time I vehemently disagree with him. Like on including Western in his top five contenders. They just haven't shown signs of being that good without Tava.

Anyway, hope he's wrong excluding Ohio from the eye test. He did include Ohio in the middle of the pack and said these middle teams could possibly challenge.

LOL - That was my first thought.. Some people will go out of their way to not give any credit. Not sure Elton is on the level of C Landon, but both biased for certain.

Jeff, I don't equate writing for the Sporting News as a sign of respect. I see it simply a result of Elton's being the PD's MAC beat writer.

I've long regarded Elton as being intellectually lazy. Consistently he has shown little regard for investing time in research and serious thought.

I've tended to think his guild membership has protected him. I say that because years ago another PD reporter, nowhere near as inept as Elton, was protected by guild membership. In his case the PD assigned him to drudge work - which is perhaps how the PD views MAC coverage. I read the PD and beyond the Browns and Buckeyes, the sports section gives scant space to other teams.

Here's the link in question: http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2015/12...

For the record, I think EA is a lazy journalist, as evidenced by his consistent misspelling of names and inaccuracies in stories. I also think he enjoys poking at the athletic department and fan base by never once referring to the school as "Ohio." The fact that he is the one covering the MAC for the PD shows how many hits MAC stories get (read: next to none), so we have to take what we get as MAC fans.

All that said, I think any ire directed at EA for prognostication is misplaced. He may be an idiot, but even a genius would have a pretty hard time picking someone beyond Akron at this point, and a column of "I dunno who could win the MAC except Akron" is hardly a hot take. Our team is full of freshman and coming off a 10-win season. We have looked solid but we hardly deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I am not an Elton Alexander fan nor do I read his articles being in nw Ohio. I do find it comical that he is being blasted for "his" predictions when most on here participate in "prediction" threads for our teams. For most, how have those predictions turned out? I've gotten way to excited and confident about all our talk only to be let down consistently! That's why you never see me partipate in what I call silly threads other than MAC pick' em.

Not sure about others, but I've had a pretty good record in the basketball pick'em threads. 2014-2015 being the lone exception.

I like the coach. I like most of the players. But, we don't look like a top 4 MAC team to me either.

At least Alexander admits any of 6 or so teams could win the MAC.

Neither do 11 of the 12 teams in the MAC.

That's my view of him as well. He based his rankings on stats and basically a combination of Ken Pom, RPI & Sagarin. And the problem with the rankings is that it is way too small of a sample size for some teams like Eastern and Northern because they both played 4 non-D1 teams. Those count in your records but don't hurt you in rankings. If we removed our bottom three ranked opponents and replaced them with NAIA teams we would have a much higher ranking and Elton would love us (or maybe his intern would).

You can tell the teams that he has seen play by his write-ups (Kent & Akron). He hasn't seen Buffalo. He hasn't seen us. He hasn't seen Eastern and he clearly hasn't seen Western. I don't have a huge problem with him not having us in the top 5. The problem is that if you have been following the MAC at all you know there is no clear line of demarcation for the top 5. Some years the article might be applicable but it's clearly just an arbitrary number for the article. Or as Mike says, lazy.

And by the way, his "eye-test" #1 just lost at home to North Florida.

Bad day for the MAC. Miami just lost at home to a bad South Carolina State team after blowing an 11 point lead. Western ekes out a win against a bad Jacksonville team, taking the lead with 1:30 to go. Northern trying to elevate themselves into the eye-test crowd with a win over Judson.

Well, if you look at those three computer ranking systems, Ohio is #3 in one of them and #5 in the other two. So I'm still having a hard time seeing how he leaves Ohio out of the top five.

And Akron squeaks by a lowly rated Lipscomb. MAC teams sleepwalking today.
