Busy news day out of the convo.

Captain Chaos surgery....out indefinitely...likely done for the season.

Clayton out with some kind of knee injury and rehabbing.
****edit foot injury****

Elmore back.

Is it Kuany time?

What a disaster of a season.

When does the portal open again?

We're in deep sheet. Sounds like Clayton is trying to avoid season ending surgery from the information provided.

Yea, this season is officially cooked.

Rip the bandaids off everyone and see who our building blocks for next season are.

We’ll see who remains come portal time.

In this era, what's the point of a redshirt? The players are going to have no loyalty to the program, why should the program have any loyalty / long term investment to the players? If Kuany can provide positive minutes, he should play. If he isn't ready to play, that's a different story. However, we shouldn't be redshirting him just to save a year of eligibility at this point.

The NCAA is kicking around going to a five-year eligibility model. If that means play all you want in five years, no more redshirts (medical redshirts still a thing and would grant a sixth year), I don't hate the idea, and it would help in a situation like this where maybe Kuany is ready now. Until then, I wouldn't burn Kuany even if he could help now, unless HE wanted it (kinda like Peyton Guice did for the women's team a few years ago). I still think you gotta do right by the kid, especially for a guy who came to the team as a freshman.

Put up or shut up time for Nicol, perhaps.

It's going to be tempting to give Boals a pass for this season because of Hadaway's injury, but I think the results to-date don't really warrant that.

His roster construction's a pretty serious issue, and I think it's a pretty big failing when a team that was picked to win the MAC has struggled as much as we have to-date, and likely will struggle even more from here on out.

No pass here. Too deep in the season and we saw the results with a healthy team. We would have needed a Cleveland miracle.

Just a brutal series of events. Will be rooting for Boals to get the rest of the boys to step up and compete the rest of the way.

It won’t happen, but you play Kuany to see what you have going into next season. As it stands, we have all unknowns with Hadaway’s injury now when it comes to an interior presence.

The only silver lining is getting a closer look at Evans.

As it relates to Nicol — that kid is as good as gone. I don’t even put it on him, he just isn’t good enough and probably shouldn’t have been here in the first place.

I agree with you both. The program isn’t in an ideal spot. Boals will likely get a pass for the injuries but it’s hard to see how next season will be any different even at full health. This year’s preseason MAC favorite didn’t look the part unless playing inferior opponents.

Boals isn’t a bad coach. He’s one of our own and there’s a lot to feel good nostalgia around the idea of him as our coach. He hasn’t even had a single losing season overall during his tenure.

However, the sample size is large enough that 18-20 wins and a Cleveland appearance is the ceiling with him until proven otherwise (again). Barring changes in his recruiting and game strategy or a HC change, this is the reality Ohio basketball for now. We’re in neutral.

Could be he had been playing with a meniscus tear, which would explain drop-off in production, defense, etc. Maybe he started feeling the "pops" that occur when the tear gets worse.

Time to start thinking about next year's roster and who returns and who doesn't. Based on what we've seen so for, this is my guess:

Clayton-(Gone-graduates)
Searls-(Gone-graduates)
Mitchell-(Gone-graduates)
AJ Brown (Gone/Portal-not as hopeful now that he sticks around for one more)
Nicol-(Gone/Portal-if you can't get minutes on this team and with the wings coming in next year...I don't see how Boals can have him come back)
James-(Gone/Portal-A lot will depend on how he finishes the season after his leave....but right now...hard to think he's coming back)
Evans-(Gone/Portal-But if he actually plays moving forward the rest of the season he can go into the maybe category)
-----
Elliott-(Returns)
Hadaway-(Returns)
Sheldon-(Returns)
Kuany-(Returns)
Burris-(Returns)
Estis-(Returns)
Chase Boals (Returns)
----
PAV-(Maybe/Portal-putting up good numbers....can see him leaving)

Let's hope I'm dead wrong. After Elliott and Hadaway....that leaves Sheldon who has completely lost his shot...and the unproven......redshirt freshman Kuany....redshirt freshman Burris....and two walk-ons that won't play.

Yes...I am referring to portal and edited the original post to reflect it. I am not suggesting they go into the portal. All I'm saying is that I can see them seriously considering it.

I will go optimistic:
All of your returnees and I will see you an AJ Brown and even couple that with his brother transferring in from Florida after not playing much this year. Toss in that I also think Evans stays and that's not a bad set of returnees. We've got three athletic wings coming so all Boals has to do is get us a post.

The ones I worry about are Elmore and Pavs. I like to think Pavs likes it here but he has shown he is willing to transfer. Elmore, without knowing why he stepped away, has been a fantastic Bobcat and a total team player. No reason to think he'd leave.

I'm just not convinced that there's a huge transfer portal market for the middle and bottom of a middle-of-the-pack team in what's become a bad basketball conference.

Maybe some guys will transfer down to get more PT. And maybe folks at other mids will be intrigued by a year of AJB or Elmore added to an existing core. But I don't think the rest of the country is salivating for a crack at our roster.

The only two to me personally who I see leaving are Nicol and Burris.

I think the incoming class of wings/guards already provides more upside than the two of them without even stepping on campus.

That said, who knows how the locker room will be at the end of what is likely to be a down season after having such high expectations.

I think the group of 4 who came together (Hadaway, Sheldon, James, AJB) all are here for the duration in my opinion. Unless there was beef with the team/coaches at the heart of that Elmore absence.

And in this day, having 4 guys play together for 4 years is nothing short of a miracle. For better or worse.

Yep. The more I've thought about it, the more I'm convinced that this is the root of why we were picked to win the MAC. Ultimately, I think people were convinced that our continuity and upper classmen was going to be a huge asset relative to some of the other top tier MAC teams like Akron and Toledo who had to rebuild huge chunks of their roster.

Which is all the more reason for us to be pointing the finger at Boals, and all the more reason to be very skeptical of his recruiting and eye for talent. To have that continuity and experience -- the best in the conference -- and still not be able to put a team on the floor that grades out above B or B+ on a good day is pretty damning.

I was gonna say, knee didn’t make much sense because I thought he was wearing a boot on the sideline tonight.
