In a vacuum, this team just looks no different than last year. Like, no one really took steps forward the way you'd expect in year's 3 and 4.

This isn't a Jeff Boals' masterclass of "figuring out what he has". AJC, AJB, Elmore, Sheldon, and Hadaway are in season 3 together and this is the second for Reef. It's baffling there's no cohesion to this team.

We still have the same inefficiencies as a year ago. The only difference is AJC is worse at the one thing he's trigger happy with being good at and we actually have another big we can play but continue to choose not to.

Overreaction? Sure, maybe. Reef or not, this should have been a W.

Just nothing but frustration so far. 5 games and 5 disappointments. None of them were terrible aside from the last 8 minutes at Memphis, but none have been good either.

Vic has now attempted 4 three pointers. That is just stupid.

Clayton doesn't have the outside shot right now. All the more reason to get in the paint more and let Brown/Sheldon/James/JP cover the threes. AJC was 6 for 8 from 2. He is always great from 2, rebounds fairly well and plays good defense in the paint (better than on the perimeter). But we insist to have him camp out on the perimeter and lead the team in 3 point attempts. I've been whining about this for 3 years now so why stop now.

I thought the defense was better for the most part. Don't get me wrong, still not good.

Don't agree with the comments about Portland. They are only 6.5 point underdogs against USF. They lost to Oregon in overtime last week. It could be another nailbiter. We need to just really pound somebody and kickstart this thing.

I'm in the camp that says it was too early too foul up three. To foul with seven seconds left likely means you are relying on two separate trips to the line to each put you back up three instead of just one. There's more room for error.

I’m officially worried. As I said earlier, this team seems to be made up of good young men with good basketball skills. They seem to get along well. They just don’t play well together. The whole is less than the sum of its parts. For this strange phenomenon I believe the coach must shoulder most of the blame. He is not molding them into a team.

Don't stop whining about it because I won't either.

Despite everything being said, I still think they'll be one of the top teams in the MAC. I was just hoping for more this season. I don't go into any years expecting to be in at-large contention but was hoping this would be a Top 100 team and they're nowhere close to that right now.

What a line from Pav this afternoon.

What an uninspired contest on the tying 3 by AJC. Not sure what the announcer was seeing. Ugh.
Always foul up 3 under 5 seconds. Always.
This. Bingo. To both takes.
Yep. Foul. Every Single Time

Top 100 teams play a lot better defense than we've seen so far. Hopefully sometime sooner than later a corner gets turned on that part of the performance.

that is an accurate assessment.they've lost two games they shouldn't have. and they lost to memphis by way more than they should have.it's beginning to feel like they've time traveled back to 1998. way past time to address the issue of defense.

Just the last five?
Trying to be nice lol. He'll never be close to what BVP brought to us.

In the field of 68 interview with Goodman in the preseason, he said he worked a LOT on shot fakes. Would love to see it in a game sometime.

Personally would love to see us run an Eddie Sutton drill in practice (of course based on our shooting today I don't think we need to put a lid on the hoop like Oklahoma State used to). Anyone who watched the JMU game is again screaming for some kind of effort on the boards and it takes everyone to do so. And when we're getting out-sized and out-hustled on the glass, it's gonna lead to more opportunities for opposing teams to bury us. We CANNOT let teams continue to have Putnam Co. tip drills on us over and over again.....

This team's grit is going to need to turn another couple gears if it wants to win in Cleveland. Otherwise, this group looks like a Friday night exit after a Thursday night of absurd shooting (which seems to be our identity in Cleveland)

Just watched Portland/USF. Portland went the distance losing in the final 1:30 and 100% looks like a better team than we do. They're certainly bigger across the board.

Discussion in a group text with Ohio alumn: what does OUr basketball team do well.
This has yet to be answered in 4.5 games.
I disagree. There is one thing we know they do well: *Attempt* 3-point shots. 😉
+1

Going 6-29 from the reservation will also get you stranded on the reservation.

Wow…finally took another look at MTSU tying 3. My god what in the world was AJ Clayton doing on that possession? And I will never understand why Boals didn’t take a time out to set up his defense and drill into these guys what he wanted. I will never understand not fouling up three with under 10 seconds left in the game. The odds of winning go up dramatically in that situation if you foul.

And on the subject of coaching…..you have to give credit to MTSU coach. 40 seconds left in the game and down one he played the foul game and extended the game. He didn’t let Ohio run 30 seconds off the clock and take his chances with 10 seconds left. It also hurt in the last 40 seconds giving up two uncontested layups with time hardly going off the clock.

Boals got worked in this one.

Losing to MTSU on a neutral court when it looked like there were 600 fans in attendance and 575 of them wearing Ohio merch is just beyond depressing and wasn’t on the bingo card.

A few weeks ago we had a thread calling for bold predictions for the team. My bold prediction was that we'd finish third in the MAC...lower than everyone expected. Now it's bold for a different reason. This sure looks like a fifth place team.

It's analogous to MAC Football. The MAC is terrible. We will be fine, and by and large, everyone will forget how bad we are in November and cut Boals the usual pass.

Ohio missed all 6 3-pt attempts in OT and missed its last 4 attempts from 3 in regulation. Make any one of those, and several were wide-open looks, and Ohio wins.

Just make a miserable 1 of 10!! My 6th-grade math students over many years, or most of them (some of them?), would tell you that that's 10%. A terrible rate but just enough to change the outcome of today's game.

To say that this team is pressing is an understatement. Somehow they need to feel like they’re playing with house money. I hope they can learn to ignore the high expectations.

You could be right that the team is pressing. Some teams/people just don't respond well to the pressure and expectations.

That being said, whatever expectations existed for this team are long gone now.

We're in save the non-con from being a complete disaster and just hoping the team improves enough to compete in the MAC mode of expectations now.

I hate excuses but is Reef's absence really not being taken into account here? Dude could be a First Team All-MAC guy. He is worth 13 ppg, 2 spg and 4 apg. That is at least 21 ppg of offense. Not to mention his disruption on the defensive end.

Reef not in the line-up hurts and, I believe makes them press even more.

Our PG went 15/11/6 and you think THAT'S the problem? By far his best game of the season and we need to go to PING for that? Ooookkkk.

Anyway... yeah foul up 3 there and we probably win.
