If anybody brought up the need for more athletic basketball players, they were shouted down with stuff about "it's basketball, not a track team, we don't need no stinking athletes...."

Just wondering who still feels that way and who does not.

Asking for a friend.

(Memphis seemed to have athletes...just sayin')

It looks like Saul is in a rough patch at Northern State after some really good years there. He was 10-19 last year and 0-3 so far this year. Possibly will be a while before he leaves for greener pastures.

Anyone who doesn't think this team has athleticism is simply not watching. A.J. Clayton is extremely athletic. He doesn't utilize that on offense but I dare you find someone who comes out of nowhere with his timing and hops on defense. AJ Brown stuck with Memphis athletically as well. Elliott has shown spots as well. And it wasn't that Saul didn't recruit athletes. Saul didn't recruit good basketball players. Plain and simple.

BVP, Jason Preston? Ben Roderick? Lunden McDay? Miles Brown? Jordan Dartis? Doug Taylor? Jason Carter? Wasn't Mike Laster his as well?

Seriously, what is with the desire to cut down Saul on here, especially with revisionist history? It's like a thing with some of you.

+1. His final comment was utterly uninformed and ignorant.

The Bob Huggins strategy…athletes first. Haven’t wanted to say it but we definitely lack athleticism i in side and out with a couple of exceptions.

This board loves talking more about coaches who failed than coaches who win. It's uncanny.

Not to pick sides or anything but BRod and Miles wasn't Saul recruits. If we wanna talk about "athletes", take Dartis and Doug Taylor off. Jordan was a catch and shoot and if Doug Taylor is an athlete, so is Reggie Keely. I'll give you BVP, Carter and Laster. JP didn't turn into what he is today under Saul either but he got him on campus at least.

The problem we have generally, and is often the same for most MAC teams, is people playing out of position.

That tends to exacerbate any limitations we have, as well as any edge we might have athletically - gets cancelled out when our best player is 6'3"-6'4" chasing around the other teams 6'7" SF all night.

he was absolutely a Saul recruit and committed to Ohio before the coaching change. he kept his commitment to the program.

I'm referring to the comment that he "didn't recruit good players", which is absolutely false.

I actually think this team's pretty athletic.

These guys seem like plus athletes to me: Elmore, AJB, Reef, Elliot, Evans, Hadaway, and Clayton. Haven't seen him on the court yet, but assume Kuany's probably in this group.

These folks seem less athletic than the median at their position in the MAC: Ajay Sheldon, Ben Nicol, Pav, Searls.

I don't see athleticism as the issue -- it seems more to me like we're undersized, trying to make up for that by leaning into our switch-ability on D, but not yet all that good at a switch-heavy defense which requires excellent communication and we're not communicating all that excellently.

Yes, I very strongly agree this comment. I think think we have to find a style of play that works with the size we have. We have to improve perimeter D and hope that teams don't keep making every shot - open or not. Maybe we'll figure it out. Maybe we won't.

Kuany is going to be the kind of D-1 athlete to answer some of the question marks.
