I had this as a W, but with how we're playing the first two games - any road game against a non-scrub (which Illinois St is not) is going to be tough.

This should be a W, but I don’t think it’ll be easy being on the road. Looking at box scores, Illinois State isn’t what I thought it would be after two games. A loss against UT-Martin and win against North Dakota State with most minutes and production coming from 3 sophomores instead of returnees from a season ago.

Illinois State isn’t a big team (only 4 guys over 6’8), plays more guards like us.

Our experience should play a factor here, but have to clean it up.

Team Rankings . com have changed this game and the MTSU game from Bobcats solidly favored to toss ups. Probably something to do with how our guys played the first two games.

Somehow they still have us as a big favorite over APSU even after they won at Butler. Thad Matta's team in reality didn't look overwhelming.

Looking at Ryan Pedon's pedigree it's almost shocking he hasn't been an assistant at Ohio at some point during his tenure. Has schooled under Groce and Holtmann.

Miami - GA
Kent State - DBO
Miami - Asst.
Toledo - Asst.
Illinois - Asst.
Ohio State - Asst.
Illinois St - HC

CEFCU Arena looks like a really nice arena to play in.

It's never easy on the road.

Boals career record in true non-con road games is 23-38. I could be off a game or two

It's never easy on the road.

How weird is it that he (currently) has the 3rd highest winning percentage of any coach in OU history?

... trailing only Christian and the mighty Russ Finsterwald, who both only coached 2 seasons each for us.

Butch Grover is third with 192. Dutch Trautwain is fourth at 136. Otherwise, that look correct.

Doubt Boals will be here long enough to pass Larry, but that would be pretty special if he did.

Do we still not know what kind of contract Boals is under? LOL

Feels like we all just moved on when his first deal ran out in April and there was no mention of him being extended - but he's still here. Sold his house in New Albany and moved to Athens.

On a year-to-year lifetime deal.

Ah yes, I forgot when I compiled this list originally that I only went back through Snyder. Good reminder to fix it for completeness.

One of Nee's win was in the 1983 NCAA tourney against these same Illinois St. Redbirds.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=013h2Jb8O7A

Watch the whole game or skip ahead to the final seconds, one of the most exciting game-winning shots in Ohio basketball history. The late Robert Tatum, a freshman guard, with the buzzer beater. I still can't believe they didn't call a foul.

Funny thing was Danny next went to Nebraska, where he was fired in 2000 after 14 years. And he still is the winningest coach in Nebraska history. Went to a football school from Ohio and did pretty amazing things given past history. So, both Frank and Danny have something in common with Husker AD's. Nebraska lost in both cases with future hires.

I was lucky to be there for that win, with my pops, and those final seconds will forever be etched in my memory. The next game vs Kentucky not so much, but fun to be there.

Let's not forget that Coach Nee also urged Charles Ping to de-emphasize (or even eliminate) the football program so he could have the funds to make Ohio a perennial power. Ping's refusal might have been the only positive move he ever made regarding Athletics during his otherwise stellar tenure in Cutler Hall.

At the time, Nee's idea probably wasn't all bad. Maybe someone older can dive into how the campus was feeling about it at the time, but it's not like he didn't have proof of what could be.

During Nee's tenure the football team was floating in mediocrity on it's way to being downright awful when they hired Cleve as coach. When Nee left he had four straight 20+ win seasons and two NCAA Tournament appearances in six years as coach. If you stretch back further, Ohio had been in nine NCAA Tournaments between 1960-1985, which is kind of a lot compared to today's standards for a MAC school. In about the same time period in the new millennium, Ohio has only been to four. A lot of that can be attributed to the changing landscape of college basketball overall and the selection committee's changes in philosophy, but it is interesting to think about what may have happened if Ping and Nee agreed on that.

Interesting thought since Cincinnati was in the tank at the time and Xavier was just getting going. Probably would've depended on conference affiliation. I just don't see any MVC teams or midwest non-parochial that ever had this long-term success…maybe Wichita? Guess you could say UMass or UConn, but was the A10 or Big East ever going to be an option? The ECAC/CAA? Coulda worked there.

Line started at them by 1.5 but is now Bobcats favored by 2.5

Total points is sitting at 148.5

An implied final score of 76 to 73 or 74 - ish.
