Thought it a very sloppily played game by both teams. Some of the passing was horrendous. We’ll get better, but this was hard to watch basketball.

It’s not even close to what we had to deal with the last two years. Vic is active and agile on both ends of the floor. He’s not lost out there. #TheUpgrade
I do not agree. I would give Evans the majority of his minutes. Sorry.

BTW, AJB had 4 fouls in 16 minutes.

That might have made coach not too happy.

The comparison is between Searls and Wiz, not Ayden and Searls. Searls is better than Wiz.

Postgame presser with Boals, AJC, and Elmore: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ52Xz_VFOs .

Some random thoughts after a late-night viewing of the replay:

- Clayton seems to be the closest thing to a go-to scorer we've got at the moment. Hit a huge 3 shortly after the timeout when Asheville had all the momentum. Still think he can go inside more (and be more patient when he does), but at this point I'm not sure how much he'll evolve.
- Elmore James rebounded nicely from a rough first game. Thought he played much more in the flow of the offense, driving to the rack when lanes were open and taking a couple of threes in rhythm. 5/6 from the line is encouraging too, as he's a guy who should get there often.
- Still confused what's going on with AJ Brown. Didn't seem that involved in the offense, and his 16 minutes were 8th-most on the team. I guess it's good we can win without him, but whether it's foul trouble, precautionary, or just a rough stretch of form we'll need him to be much more assertive if we're going to turn close games like this one into 15+ point wins.
- Agree with other posters about Searls being an upgrade over Wiz. Solid piece off the bench who seems to be able to hold his own on defense and mix it up with a few post moves. He's not going to light up the scoreboard, but 7 points/6 rebounds--and only 1 turnover--in 2 games is encouraging.
- Very happy to see the freshmen get minutes. Elliott seems to have a "college-ready" frame and made an impact in his short stint with a flying snag of a rebound and a forced travel. I can see why people were singing praises about his defense. Evans wasn't in long enough for me to get much of a feel for his game, but starting off his Bobcat career with a dunk has to feel good.
- On the other hand, 0 minutes for Ben Nicol once again. With Kuany/Burris out of commission that leaves him as the only available player not to see the court today. I remember hearing promising things about his shooting, so there must be some other part of his game lagging. Defense? Lack of athleticism?
- Crowd seemed solid, if unspectacular, from my view. Have to imagine that several thousand more would have packed the Convo had it been Dad's Weekend. At least those that were there got to go home with a Bobcat W.

Short bench for these two games, but goal is to win today and the short rotation gets it done. The freshmen haven't earned anything yet. JMU and UNC-Asheville pretty solid mid major teams and the score forced a short bench. Elmore James and Brown basically playing the same position. Splitting in minutes. Seems Hadaway and Clayton getting majority of minutes inside. Searles getting good minutes. Sheldon getting backup minutes behind the two starting guards. Boals leaning on the upper classmen

Asheville will win a lot of games in the Big South.

OUr two freshmen looked the most athletic in the pre-game layup line. Not sure how that translates to game action or PT.

All basketball fans would love to see players on their favorite team(s) magically grow another inch or two over the off-season. For me, this has never been more true than with Elmore James. His game, more than anyone, would benefit from a growth spurt. I mentioned to another BAer during last night's game that it appears he has lost an inch in each of the last two seasons.

Was already looking forward to the Reynoldsburg Raiders visit to the Jim Allen Gymnasium in Newark at the end of the upcoming high school season. But now I have another reason with junior Xavier McKinney (any relation to OUr own Jeff?) joining senior Jordan Fisher as a Bobcat commit.

Captain Chaos has become a fan favorite for many Bobcat fans. But I can see why he's going to get a lot of negative attention from opposing fans, not unlike Pete Rose during his MLB career. But Pete used to say that he didn't mind boos from the fans when playing in away games.

Part of Captain Chaos charm is annoying the hell out of the other team and its fan base. He plays the role extremely well.

Not our best, but UNC-Asheville is a solid team, this was never going to be a rollover game. Still a strong team win, a lot of scoring distribution and involvement.

I’m not understanding the debate between Searls and Wiz here. I can’t tell if some actually believe there’s no difference or just want to die on the hill of opposing FearLeon.

Searls is a better rotational player than Wiz and it isn’t even close.

Glad we got see Elliot and Evans get some PT and I hope there’s more on the way. Elliot looks like a true playmaker/facilitator and energy off the bench. Would like to see these two 10-12/15 mins a game instead of 5.

Nice to see Elmore look more like Elmore. I’ll take 10 assists between Pav and Reef every night. It’s wild to me our starting backcourt out rebounds our starting frontcourt, but this might just be the norm for us at this point. At least we won that category last night.

After two games, Hadaway and Reef seem like “the guys” who want the ball when we need a basket and embrace.

My guess on AJB — load management during non-conference. Could be wrong, but I’ve got nothing else on his usage so far.

Hadaway + Sheldon creates loads of chaos. Really like the player Sheldon has become, just needs to get his shot going and he could really be a difference maker.

Firstly, it's not the 2000s O Zone, but that had to be one of the most antagonizing student presences for a November/December game of the last decade. Lower sections mostly standing, loud at the right moments, and not entirely led by Norm. Good sign for when Akron, Toledo, etc are in the gym.

Shereef is my game MVP. Check the tape. He was involved in so much that won't appear in the box score. It seemed most defensive rebounds we won late, he was somehow in the mix.

That was the Elmore of old we all want to see. More of that shot selection. Wide open breakaway for a layup so I doubt we get that throw down. Would echo the thought about his height. I'm 6'0" and down on floor level we're close to eye to eye.

We've cracked the seal on six guards in the rotation, though that may regress for Memphis or the higher end of the MTE. It seemed the only pattern to it was at least one of Shereef or Pav on the floor at all times. Everyone else interchangeable.

Cool to see three, scratch that, four high school verbals in the house. Kelly and Mosley particularly looked to be vibing with each other, sharing laughs. All are medium-sized guys, so I'll harp again, who are our bigs next year. Evans and Kuany have the height but not the wide bodies. Whether we honor a 14th scholarship or someone transfers, I think there's a true big out there somewhere joining next year's roster.

Weird phenomenon - does this happen to anyone else? We get down by one late and I never had any doubt or worry that we would lose. That only happens if I'm there in person. If I were watching on TV I'd be sweating it. In person I'm just more accepting of whatever happens.

Speaking of Norm, I hardly recognized him in the team's home opener. He's lost a lot of weight since OUr last home game last season. His weight loss in no way kept him from clearly letting OUr defense know who the Asheville shooters were on the floor. Nor in any way prevented him from letting the O Zone know when to quiet down, like when a Bobcat was taking a foul shot.

Was GREAT to be back in the Convo. Norm looked tiny, I have to imagine he has gastric bypass for that kind of rapid weight loss. Wish him well. I saw seedlings of a really encouraging core in the Ozone, gentlemen if you are out there I can not overstate your importance to our program. An engaged and rowdy student fan base is one of the top selling points for our player recruitment and retention.

We are so deep. Small look at Evans & Elliott but they 100% look game ready to me. I can't remember a roster more equipped to handle injuries. It also makes you feel good for next year even with losing Clayton/Reef/Searls.

I am not saying I don't welcome Paveletzke here, but I will say I would be 100% content with Sheldon & Elliott running the point. Sheldon is a really solid player that keeps getting better. The only downside of the depth is feeling bad for guys who don't get many minutes. Agree that for this game, AJB's foul trouble led to him being the odd man out. Can we roll with a 10 man rotation? I don't know, that is a lot. But all these guys sure seem deserving to me.

Now after I just gushed about our talent, I'll say that was a little frustrating and disappointing. We won it at the free throw line more than anything else. Just had some trouble synching in the 2nd half and lost guys too much on defense (namely their 2 guards that hit TEN three pointers)

I love Hadaway, but I would be happy if he did not shoot another 3 the rest of the season. I thought he shot too many last year and I'd prefer he be positioned elsewhere most the time.

Tuesday is a big one, toss up game. Similar to JMU but a bit more winnable.

Hadaway is a weapon from beyond the arc and proved it last year. probably a little streakier than ideal, but it has to be a threat for him to effective as an inside player. Keep making the D respect his ability outside to create opportunities inside whether driving or cutting. dude knocked down 3 in the first game and almost got us back in the game against jmu. Fire away.

The only issue is that he's all left. If he doesn't knock down one early then it really makes his life difficult. He simply cannot go right at all and becomes pretty easy to defend 1v1. If he has his shot going then it opens up a lot more for him but until he can show the ability to drive to his right, he's easy to scout.
