Ayden Evans - I said all off-season he looked more advanced on the D side and might be a project on O. Seems that might be true.
The irony in this is I think most on this board would accept immediate defense in the paint, while he fine tunes the offense. I really hope we see him play Saturday.

My point is that we could have and should have done a lot better than Searls, another friend of Boals and the program. We remain badly undersize, as was so painfully apparent vs. JMU.
Ayden Evans?

Now, if you want to claim we needed yet another big in addition to Clayton (who isn't a center), Searls (who is a bench guy) and Evans (who might need some time as a freshman) - well then I agree with you.

But for the 1 millionth time, in the era of mercenary free agent AAU ball, bigs cost $$$$ that we don't have.

I won't blame Boals and the staff for getting guys like Burris, Elliott, AJ Brown and Paveletzke - who likely came at a more reasonable price - and assuming they play up to their potential (still an if for some) - will provide plenty of W's in the MAC.

Now, they won't help much against long athletic or P4/5 teams.

This is exactly why, if you looked at my pre-season prediction post, I expect 24+ wins and a MAC 'ship - but I also expect us to lose to every P5 team in our non-con and get bounced in the 1st round of the NCAA.

It is what it is.

Either change the NCAA (good luck) or donate some more $$ (I have).

100% agree.

I don't care if he travels 3 times and drops 2 passes at this point - if he can play D with size and grab rebounds and block a shot or two, I'll take it.

He doesn't need 20 minutes. He definitely needs more than 0.

And that’s kind of the thought process with Nicol at this point too, right? He’s 6’7 — can he get put in an experienced lineup, where he can comfortable play defense and crash boards?

If these two can chip in some buckets, fantastic. More importantly, we just need to fill gaps in our play with size and rebounding. This is Boals personnel, he’s gotta work these kids in because it’s needed.

Color me wrong - but from his recruiting profile and what I've seen/read - Nicol is a small 6'7. What I mean by that is, he's more of a wing shooter than a post guy. He's listed as a small forward for a reason, so I tend to not include him in discussions about our bigs.

Full disclosure I've never been high on Nicol.

I think if he turns into a guy who can hit a couple jumpers off the bench in 5-10 minutes a game by his senior year, we call it a win. I'm not expecting much from him this year.

I haven't been either and you're correct that Nicol is a wing. I thought coming into this year we'd see him put in at the 3 alongside a combo of the 4 bigs to create bigger lineups to help with our size discrepancy.

With the worst case being, he's able to help grab boards and alleviate some defensive mismatches (JMU's AJ Smith, for example) at the 3 for AJB.

Still hoping for this.

Would love to see it, not confident he's ready or Boals has confidence in him yet. I'm just wondering if Boals went into JMU saying I'm not going to let the true freshman and Nicol get in there and lose confidence game one.

What I do want to see Saturday night is less minutes for Elmore James. We are heading down Brod territory with him when it comes to losing his shot.

Elmore never had a shot. It was all layups.

So let me try to comprehend your logic, or lack thereof. James from Freshman to Soph years doubles his rebounds per game, goes to 85% at the line, declines to 46% FG, doubles his assists per game and increases steals. So, you have one data point in 2024-25 now and this is your conclusion? Better yet, did you ever take a Statistics course in Athens? Know what a statistical outlier is? Then again, maybe Boals needs you as his assistant.

My focus was on his shooting...dating back to last season. So let's take a deep dive. In Elmore's last 17 games (including James Madison game) he's attempted 58 shots and made only 18. My statistics course in Athens tells me during this span he's shooting 31% (18-58). And yes...Elmore is giving me Brod vibes when he couldn't make a shot his last two years in Athens. I'm not saying Elmore doesn't see the floor as he brings value in other areas. But there is no way he should ever be getting more minutes over a healthy AJB. And against JMU...Elmore was on the court instead of AJB when JMU went on their run from 16 minute mark to the 9-10 minute mark in each half.

Wasn't Elmore playing with a broken hand last year? Pretty sure I recall reading that.
