What exactly was AJB's injury? Did he have shoulder surgery? Labrum/rotator cuff?

Everything I am seeing just says shoulder injury. He did have surgery. As far as I can tell he's resumed 5v5 action, which I would assume means he'll be ready for 11/4 @ JMU. Even if he ends up in the 12-13ppg range, his ability to go off any given night should win the team some games throughout the season. Fingers crossed for health.

This is a Top 100 team with the potential to be way better depending on a few factors.

AJ Brown's health and the ability for everyone to get on the same page quickly will determine if this is a good MAC team or a really good mid-major.

If Brown is healthy, there's no reason to hold him back. He had surgery and should be moving in the right direction. If he's not ready yet, be cautious and slowly bring him up to speed.

Either way, this team has high end talent, role players and what appears to be quality young depth. These are the seasons you get excited for because we're not talking ourselves into thinking they could make the tournament. They absolutely should have a chance in Cleveland in March.

Just curious if there was any further detail other than the generic "shoulder" designation. Labrums can be tricky and have a long recovery time to get back to feeling "normal."

I, too, am cautiously optimistic for AJB to return to the all-conference type of player but I don't think it will take long to see what he's got.

Podcast that features Senderoff and Steele previewing Kent/Miami and the MAC in general: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgHyT7-hYnc . Not much in the way deep dives but a light listen (if you can get past the host calling our coach "Broiles" at one point...)

As far as the upcoming season, I see this team or the 2021 team as our most talented in the Boals era. Love Paveletzke's game, and between him, AJB, and AJC we've got a couple of guys I think can "go off" offensively. Would love to see the freshmen get minutes, but if everyone's healthy (and as good as we think/hope) I'm guessing at least one more redshirt is on the way.

I hear you. How about Shereef Mitchell? In all the excitement with Pav and AJB coming back I think Reef is not getting as much pub. I think he is going to explode this year. I felt like he had replaced Jaylin as Alpha Dog last year at the end of the year and that's saying a lot because Jaylin Hunter will go down as one of my favorite portal additions.

Good point, very glad they were able to retain Shereef. He should also be our best perimeter defender and make life a lot easier on that end of the floor.

Reef and Pav might be the best backcourt in the MAC with the ceiling as one of the top mid-major backcourts.

#1 in preseason MAC poll. AJC preseason 1st team with AJB and Reef preseason 2nd team.

Note — Sullinger is on preseason 2nd team. I thought he was sitting out this year?

How in the hell is Sullinger allowed to play this season without sitting out a year? He transferred twice in four months. WTF

Given the timeline, it seems possible he never actually enrolled at Furman. It was announced on August 25th that he'd re-enrolled at Kent State.

First day of classes at Furman were 8/22, and entirely possible the story just broke late.

Sullinger and Davis both ended back at Kent because grades sucked.

Do you know that? Is it reported? Or just extrapolating from the tweet you posted?

I mean, when did Sullinger even have time to attend classes at Furman to rack up grades that sucked?

Akron's definitely worse academically than Kent State. Not sure this guy wants to bark up that particular tree.

But, I dunno, feels pretty speculative. VonCameron Davis never committed anywhere and withdrew. NCAA eligibility is not determined at the school level, right? If he was academically eligible to play at Kent, any school that wanted him would have found a way to make it work, no? It's not like basketball programs are having dudes re-take the SATs.

Edit: On the Furman board, nobody so much as speculated academics. Just "personal reasons."

This is what I was wondering too. Given the win at all costs mentality of college sports, just how bad are Sullinger and VCD’s grades? To not be eligible anywhere else that might have led to more NIL dollars/a step up in competition would be wild. Someone would have found a way to make it work if they really wanted to.

Either way, Kent is a threat with those two in the fold along with Akron and Toledo.

Missed Boals, but caught the end of AJC’s interview with the Field of 68/Jeff Goodman. Spoke highly of Vic being the biggest surprise in a good way. Knew him from HS, but game has developed. Hook “doesn’t miss”. Facilitation is also much better between Reef, Pav, and even Sheldon.

First - Senderhoff himself said the plan was for Sullinger to redshirt and play his final year in 25-26. I am wondering if the voters are just uninformed. Like when Rafeal Palmeiro won a gold glove while playing 140 games at DH.

AJ Brown picked as a 2nd team selection is wild to me. That just goes to show he really passes the eye test for folks, because he really hasn't shown the production to warrant that PLUS the uncertainty surrounding his health. Don't get me wrong, I can see it and understand but it still shocked me.

Having 3 preseason all MAC performers and a lot of buzz around Pav as being at that level...pretty exciting even before we get to Hadaway/Sheldon and all the freshmen.

Here's the full video of MAC basketball media day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5aEsqmZ7xg&t=13587s . Around 3:46:20 for the men and 5:20:15 for the women.

Went back and watched Senderoff's interview for Kent. Maybe it's just me but I thought he played it coy when they mentioned Sullinger as a 2nd-teamer, like he was surprised but decided to hold back on telling them about the redshirt.

Went back and watched Boals. Thought it was cool that he mentioned Reef and AJC could have gone elsewhere and gotten more NIL money. I think that speaks volumes about the culture.

When asked about how they compete in the landscape moving forward, he said continuing to lean into culture. If someone leaves, they’ll look at the portal since you can’t build a program just one way these days.

Spoke highly about AJC’s post development over the offseason. It’s wild to me AJC is a senior in college and currently just 20 years old.

Expects the core of AJC, Reef, AJB, EJ4, Hadaway, and Sheldon to set the tone this season. I liked how much Jeff Goodman knew about our team. Goodman loves Pav and mentioned multiple times he’s going to be good for us.

I get the instant fall-back for kids not transferring is 'grades.' But realistically, kids have to be really, really, really bad not to be eligible these days.

Really, when is the last time you heard of a player being academically ineligible more than a semester, if that?? Anywhere, football or basketball.

Just doesn't happen. Seems guys can get 'eligible' in a couple of weeks.

As for Kent, just looking at the rosters from the last few years at Kent, guys that play a lot there don't usually transfer, particularly as juniors and seniors. Have no idea why, or what the culture is, or the NIL. Their quality players usually stick around, so far.

... or come back.

Every program has its quirks, and while they are not the bell cow program in the league, they do have some basketball equity, so to speak. All this can change in a heartbeat, but right now ....
