I think it's a matter of a D1 school needing a pre-conference tuneup but not able to schedule another D1 school, for one reason or another. The D1 school can treat it as a regular season game, since they're only allowed one exhibition game a year, but it doesn't count toward RPI. The only real risk is injury to a key player. The lower division school can call it an exhibition, since they don't have the one-a-year restriction. There are lots of other similar games on the D1 schedule in the next seven days. Some schools play two.

Or we could like EMU who is playing 4 NAIA scholarship this pre-season alone. 4!!!
And everyone of those NAIA teams is better than Urbana.

I'm not going to get too worked up over it, but essentially this is a scrimmage so we don't get too rusty with 2 weeks off.

If the starters play more than 10 minutes I'll be shocked and disappointed.
Might as well get the shock and disappointment out of the way today or tomorrow so you can enjoy game day a little more.

First, I'm not actually going to watch this scrimmage, so nothing to worry about in regards to enjoying it or not. We're going to "win" by 30+. Walk-ons should all near double figures.

Urbana couldn't beat Athens HS. Why should I expect to be shocked and disappointed?

Do you honestly think either a) it's going to be a close game b) this event (hard to call it a game really) is anything more than a scrimmage for our guys against someone other than the scout team or c) due to a & b, it's worth it to risk injury or bad habits for any of the starters to play more than enough time to take a significant lead in the 1st half and maybe to the first media timeout of the second half in order to get some work in (i.e. 10ish minutes total)?
You should expect to be shocked and disappointed because the starters will likely play more than the 10 minute threshold you put out there. I wasn't trying to say anything more than that.

I'm planning to go to the game. I'm going to enjoy it with the family. I'm less concerned about the opponent, results, and minutes played than taking Mom & Dad to The Convo for a game, and seeing some Bobcat friends in the process.
Starters all got close to 30 minutes each? Wow.

Dozier only getting 2 garbage time minutes is the most disappointing thing to me. I guess he's just not ready yet, but it would have been nice to see what he can do against semi-real competition.

Also, 0 minutes from Khari Harley, not even garbage minutes. I wonder if he is even going to be on the roster next year at this point?

Taylor got 11 tonight according the the box score. Urbana must be pretty bad.

Not to be a jerk about it, but after watching him play up close at WKU, he seemed slow and with very little of the footwork a D-1 big guy needs - even a backup. And his free throws were absolute bricks. This is the guy who will be starting center next season? SMH
I agree greencat and I'm not being a jerk about it either. Many believe he's the starting center next year. I said a few weeks ago in another thread that he's not a 20-28 minute guy. Unless he shows great improvement, he's a 10-12 minute guy. I got hammered by some for saying it, but I'll ask again...where are the points in paint coming from next year? Can compare it to Stevie Taylor. He wasn't starting point guard material, but that was only option when DJ left. Stevie was a 12-15 minute guy and I got blasted for saying that. I hope we are both wrong about DT.
This isn't Twitter, it's a fan board, thus I don't feel as guilty being critical of a player. But to be honest, with all the "mid-majors" in my current home area (MTSU, Belmont, Lipscomb, APSU, TSU) he wouldn't start for any of them and might have to walk-on to even dress out at a couple of those. I haven't been critical of Saul's recruiting, being geographically in another area as I am, but this team doesn't have the quality depth on the bench to be anywhere near what it could be. Everybody after the 7th guy can't be a scrub and end up with a really good season.

Saul might start looking at some guys transferring out of big-name programs or even graduate transfers like that Pancake guy at WKU who had averaged 18ppg at Hartford.

At this point, they should either declare it a medical redshirt year or cut him loose.

I couldn't disagree more on this actually.

He is only playing 12 minutes a game right now and is averaging 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block on 52% fg's.

Very conservatively he will get 24 minutes a game next year. That will give us a line of 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks a game. More realistically he will play 30 minutes and we will get 13 points and 10 rebounds a game.

His current Offensive Rebound % is 16.6%. This would put him 16th in the entire nation. When he gets more minutes we are going to have one of the best offensive rebounders in the country.

Bottom line he is a very efficient inside scorer and plus rebounder and post defender. He is never going to be MAC POY, but he is a perfect complement to a team with a bunch of outside shooting options.

I do hope his FT% can return to where it was last year somehow.

This exchange is straight out of "Moneyball", with bigtilly being Brad Pitt.

You actually have to be hurt to be medically redshirted.

I didn't see moneyball but the current Taylor stats include games against:

Sam Houston
Southern
Tennessee Tech
Bryant
Milwaukee
Cleveland State
Urbana

Let's see where they are after MAC season ends. It's not like he was playing against ranked national powerhouse teams to this point. He will certainly need to play at an entirely different level than he did at WKU. (2 points in 16 minutes)

Greencat: I don't know as much about the midmajors in the Nashville area as you, but I do keep track to a certain extent. I traveled down the day before Ohio's game with WKU specifically to see the Lipscomb at Austin Peay game. Sat four rows up and watched carefully. I have seen Middle on TV and I get media coverage of Middle and WKU because I'm in the Hunt-Chas media market and they are in CUSA with Marshall. Only team in that group I haven't seen so far this season is Belmont. And I've seen them in recent seasons in our games with them.

I disagree on two points: 1) Your assessment of Doug Taylor. So he didn't have a very good scoring game at WKU. Agreed. But overall he is a good presence inside and becoming more mobile by the month. I think he'd hold his own consistently vs the Nashville area midmajors. Midmajors recruit kids to fill roles in their particular systems. Doug fits Phillips' system and will continue to get better. He's still bouncing back from the bad knee injury his senior HS season. Some of the Nashville midmajors may not have recruited him because they play a different style. For example, virtually all players on the Peay roster are slender slashers. But that doesn't mean Doug would be consistently outclassed. He is a different type player.

2) I disagree that all players on our roster below #7 are "scrubs".

Sorry we didn't connect when I was in the area.

The talent gap between APSU/DLU you saw and MTSU/TSU/Belmont/Chattanooga is massive but I won't dwell on mid-south mid-majors and bore most of the posters with it.

I didn't see the WKU game but this is pretty much the opposite impression I have of Doug Taylor. As for the free throws it seems to be a recent development and I don't know if it has something to do with his wrist injury because he sure didn't look like that last year. Either way, his points/minute are just about exactly the same as Tony's were his sophomore year and his rebounds per minute are higher. Tony scored 10.0 points per game his sophomore year and averaged 7.6 rebounds in 24.1 minutes per game. If you extrapolate Taylor's minutes to match Tony's sophomore minutes he's scoring at a 9.7 clip and grabbing 8.2 boards. We'll be fine.
