Scared to death of this game. Legit big guy inside to compete with Tone in Hall. Solid guard play that we couldn't handle at Kent last year. Some newbies who are settling in well. Can shoot free throws and get to the line. We are going to need Jaaron to assert himself. Tone will get his. Darty and Kenny will do what they do. We're going to need one of Block, Culver or Carter to score in double figures and give good minutes.

No reason to be scared. Ohio needs to see what it takes to win the MAC. Play a tough team tough at home. If Kent wins, learn from it. Get better.

Kent is good but not great. I saw a lot of their game on TV when they lost at home to Wright St. We will see how their youngsters respond to their first MAC road game.

I saw them against Texas. They're athletic and they play very hard, but they didn't strike me as very skilled.

Elton had an interesting point about Kent. They have 8 players who have never played a MAC road game. He also said they don't have a single player on the roster who has played in every MAC gym which I found interesting.

This game has been getting major pub in Northeast Ohio. This is a very important game. Yahel Hill and others will be watching this national televised game. Go Cats

Jaylin Walker has been a very good player for them this year, too, but he's a high-volume shooter. He's had some pretty bad games (4-18 vs. Oregon, 5-13 vs. Ball State) but some pretty good ones (10-16 vs. NJIT, 9-18 vs. Texas).

Kent State has not shot the 3-pointer very well this year. Jerrelle Deberry (43 percent) has been the most accurate shooter and he's missed the last couple of games. After him, Mitch Peterson (39 percent) and Kevin Zabo (37 percent) are the only guys shooting over 31 percent, and they both average less than one maker per game. Walker takes a lot of 3s but has shot just 30.9 percent.

If we're in the running for this kid, not too bad.
That's assuming Tone is interested in playing in the paint. He's been very foul prone vs. good bigs....this could be a huge factor.
Tone will get his.
Maybe....from where? From the arc? Will he challenge Hall on the box? I'm very interested to see what AC we get tonight. The one that tends to dominate in the paint with the baby hook and offensive rebounds.....OR....the one that camps outside the arc and wants to chuck 3s.

As usual...I think it's another live-by-the-three-die-by-the-three game for Ohio. We should get a feel for how this goes the first 10 minutes.

According to Sagarin and kenpom, this line is about as expected.

Interesting that Ohio is in the 90s in Sagarin and kenpom, but is 159 in UD Pride RPI. Kent is in the 130 to 150 range in Sagarin and kenpom, while they are 205 in RPI.

MAC is around 12 to 14 in Sagarin, but only 18 in RPI. Last couple of years the MAC was around 10-12 in RPI.

Is challenging Hall in the box a better option than bringing Hall away from the basket? Why can't he do both?

From the angle of recruiting, I agree this is important. I'd think we're in the running, with an open offer and Gareri working on him to come with him to Athens.

I guess I should've phrased that better. If he chooses to draw Hall out and not play in the post on offense...who is getting offensive rebounds? No one outside of AC, Carter or Taylor has more than 10 offensive rebounds ALL SEASON.

We can't expect to go 16-31 from 3pt range every night. When we do, it's certainly a luxury.

But Kent is #1 rebounding team in MAC....by a wide margin (+9.4 rpg)

They might not guard the 3pt shot that well...but if Ohio isn't hitting 3s this could get dicey.

Jimmy Hall 66 offensive rebounds
Antonio Campbell 25 offensive rebounds

Hall has more than half of Ohio's combined offensive rebounds this year (118)

Ohio's lack of toughness in the paint is pretty evident...

*L Marshall (Taylor 17 pts, 11 rebs)
*L Iona (Washington 30 pts)
*L WKU (Johnson/McGhee 22pts, 24 rebs)

* Campbell had four fouls in each game that limited his playing time
(28, 26, 22 minutes on the floor in each loss)

Bottom line...AC has to play smart. Hall might be most skilled big he's faced up with this year. If AC gets frustrated, he tends to make dumb/lazy fouls (see 3 losses).

I'm just intrigued by this match-up.

In two games vs. Kent last year (89-82 L at Kent, 72-61 W at home)

L 89-82 at Kent
Campbell 31 minutes, 4 fouls, 21 points, 9 rebs (7-17 FG...0-4 3pt...7-8 FT)
Hall 30 minutes, 0 fouls, 15 points, 10 rebs (7-16 FG...0-1 3pt...1-1 FT)

W 72-61 vs Kent
Campbell 30 minutes, 4 fouls, 28 points, 7 rebs (11-19 FG...0-3 3pt..5-5 FT)
Hall 33 minutes, 3 fouls, 23 points, 13 rebs (10-19 FG...1-2 3pt...2-3 FT)

That means in two games, AC was 18-29 in the paint area. That's extremely effective. We haven't seen him do that much this year. Curious to see if he reverts back to that tonight....or if this 3pt chucking AC we've seen a lot of so far is who he is this MAC season.

Those two battled last year and both had good games....just curious if AC has interest in mixing it up in the paint where he had a lot of success vs. Hall last year. Or if he'll sit back and just shoot 3ptrs

And this is where I am scared. Would like to see more of our guys battling the offensive glass. Kaminski often times is useless to us if he isn't hitting from outside. Any defensive rebounds he gets is from the ball floating to him. I wish he'd crash the glass. Block battles but is too small and I think Dartis and Simmons, while athletic enough to battle, can't get in there. That leaves DT, Culver and Carter as bangers and while they do a nice job, they aren't in there as many minutes as the others. If Kenny is cold early in a game I would love his 30 minutes to be cut down and given to Carter and Doug Taylor. Those two could crash glass while Tone shoots from outside.
