And Akron barely beating Lipscomb is a reason that we can finish anywhere this year. We definitely have the horses to be MAC champions but we also have so many new parts that there's no telling how we'll be. We could be 7-11 or 11-7. We could go 15-3 or 10-8. I worry about Tony in foul trouble and I worry about the fact that Block isn't getting minutes the last few games. I worry that Kenny doesn't show any real fire and that Jordy hasn't hit his freshman wall yet. I worry about Jaaron's minutes and Laster playing very little. But I also love Kenny's ability to hit for 20 in a game. I love Jaaron looking like the top PG in the league. I think Tony will dominate the bigs in the league. I love Treg's development. I think Dartis, Block and Gollon have shown great flashes. And I love that we have a former starter as our energy guy in Laster. So...what I'm saying rather long-windedly, let's enjoy the ride with a hard-working, fun-loving bunch of guys after a 5-13 year last year with shoot-first seniors.

I like your assessment, as I have similar feelings. I feel pretty good about OUr guys going into MAC Play. I think I saw OUVans comment, about the conference looking like Akron, followed by a pile of 7-8 teams that all look pretty close together. I could honestly see Zippy going 17-1 or 16-2. I don't feel like OUr guys are 15-3 good at the moment, but who knows. My gut feeling is in the 10-8 or 11-7 range. 9-9 wouldn't be a disappointment in my eyes. 12-13 wins in conference would be a really great season IMO. I'm looking forward to it a whole bunch!

He hasn't seen Buffalo.
We've been complaining all season about how the Bulls lack balance with no post play whatsoever and he starts his writeup on the Bulls with "The MAC's most balanced team". Huh?

For the record, I think EA is a lazy journalist, as evidenced by his consistent misspelling of names and inaccuracies in stories. I also think he enjoys poking at the athletic department and fan base by never once referring to the school as "Ohio." The fact that he is the one covering the MAC for the PD shows how many hits MAC stories get (read: next to none), so we have to take what we get as MAC fans.

All that said, I think any ire directed at EA for prognostication is misplaced. He may be an idiot, but even a genius would have a pretty hard time picking someone beyond Akron at this point, and a column of "I dunno who could win the MAC except Akron" is hardly a hot take. Our team is full of freshman and coming off a 10-win season. We have looked solid but we hardly deserve the benefit of the doubt.
He isn't lazy when it comes to going out of his way to include "University" after our name in every reference possible, even though no other team has that distinction pinned to it within the MAC.

On the other hand, Piotrowicz of the Toledo Blade wrote a much better preview.

Elton has never passed my "eye test," so I don't bother reading anything he's written in over a decade.

If I did that, I'd never get the entertainment we all get from Chuck in Huntington's prize newspaper.

There's a part of me that thinks Elton does this intentionally. He knows there is a large Ohio alumni base in Cleveland. He knows we have passionate fans, especially compared to other MAC schools. So he writes an article, dismisses our team and gets more page views of his article than he otherwise would.

Well, Chuck for all of his idiosyncrasies, at least understands the sports that he is reporting on. Chuck may be a homer, but he's got a level of integrity far surpassing anything I'd attribute to Elton. Also, and this is perhaps the pièce de résistance, he knows we are OHIO and not "Ohio U." ;-)

Even after one game it is not hard to spot contenders. They are the teams with the triple-threat post players. At the top of the list is Eastern Michigan with the tandem of 6-9 James Thompson IV and 6-9 Jordan Nobles. In EMU's easy victory over Central Michigan, 85-63, Nobles had 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Thompson had 18 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

Akron's 6-10, 275-pound Isaiah Johnson had 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists; Toledo's Steve Taylor had nine points, 15 rebounds and seven assists; Ball State's Trey Moses had 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists and Kent's Jimmy Hall had 20 points, nine rebounds and five assists as the only big man on this list without a turnover.
Elton at it again.

Elton's typos (courtesy of Advance laying off most of the editorial staff at the PD) make him look worse than usual. That said, I actually don't think his early nods to Eastern and Akron are too far off base. I think his tune will change if we can handle the Flashes tomorrow.

Isaiah Johnson - 6-10, 275? Sure........Even the Zippy site calls him 290.

Also in there- Kent making 31 straight FT's? 57 free throw attempts in that game. Yikes.

He actually picked us as the first of three favorites in another article released just a few days ago: http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2017/01...

I am not an Elton Alexander fan nor do I read his articles being in nw Ohio. I do find it comical that he is being blasted for "his" predictions when most on here participate in "prediction" threads for our teams. For most, how have those predictions turned out? I've gotten way to excited and confident about all our talk only to be let down consistently! That's why you never see me partipate in what I call silly threads other than MAC pick' em.
he gave us our only vote for the top 25 early on, he may have been disappointed by some of the losses.

That's actually a well researched, well thought out piece. He points out our stretch where we play four of five games on the road. We actually have two such stretches. Looking forward to the panic on this board at the end of January just after we've finished the first one.
