Man, I miss the days when we would see legit NBA prospects frequently in MAC play. Gary Trent, Nate Huffman, Antonio Daniels, Ira Newble, Derick Dial, Earl Boykins, Wally Szcerbiak, S. Stonerook, Bonzi Wells, Brandon Hunter, Chris Kaman... Those are just the ones I can think of...I'm sure there are more that looked like they had a shot.... seemed to die off around 2005. Bummer.
My question is, how much of that has to do with the type of player that the league wants? Seems like PG's aren't big enough unless they're 6'6", PF's need to be 6'10" 265+.

Not to disparage Ira Newble but I wouldn't say he ever caused a ripple in the "Players I Have to See" landscape while he was at Miami. He was overshadowed on his own team by guys like Devin Davis, Wally and Damon Frierson. Now Ron Harper and Grant Long...

Thunder Dan Marjele and Dan Roundfield come to mind, also.

Fact: Only one MAC basketball player has been drafted since Chris Kaman was taken 6th in 2003.

Agree Newble didn't move meters, but he did play in the league.

Sad this league hasn't had draftee in decade+

Look at the link to see the rich vein of talent from the mid-90s to the early 2000s. That's just the players who made the NBA - there were some exceptional players in that era who didn't make the league.

http://basketball.realgm.com/ncaa/conferences/Mid-America...

From 1995-2003, the MAC won nine NCAA Tournament games and earned multiple bids several times. Those were great years for the MAC.

OhioStunter has it right - Rashaun Holmes from BG - drafted two years ago in the second round.

I still think it has a lot to do with how the league changed from the late 90's or so to recent years. Draftees always seem to be required to be huge physical specimens for the most part. Little guys like Curry or Earl Boykins are the exceptions to the rule. I'm not a student of the NBA, but I think you'll see less 3-4 year college players are drafted anymore in general. It's the 1-2 year kids and a lot more European players that seem to have changed the draft. The MAC's best players are usually 4 year college players, and don't fit that mold too well.

A bit off topic, but Antonio Gates was a big thorn in our side for years before he was a star for the Chargers.

The game unfolds and the fans react however they react. To say that there should be more noise, etc. and try to have some kind of fan "game plan" seems silly to me.

Was Harvey before or after Tom Kozelko? Might have spelled that incorrectly but I think he spent some time in the NBA.

Exactly - could not have said it better. But when we live in a world where parents have to set up "play dates" for their kids, everything has to be planned/scripted. That said, we once went to a Wilco concert in Mem Aud and had front row seats. I thought the show was good but nothing necessitating standing up for until one song late in the second set. He actually said to us - "now you stand up." Haven't listened to their stuff ever since. You earn a standing ovation.

I was standing the entire show....and everyone around me.....

Probably but none in our party thought he was worth standing for. Too big an ego for me and he's really not that good. Time to duck!

Duck? here some quacks - From Wiki (the summaries there as good as I could spend time on pontificating)

"Some critics have dubbed Wilco the "American Radiohead", due to their stylistically diverse catalog.[130][131][132] A critic from the New York Times argues that Wilco has a "roots-rock ... [sound which] reached back to proven materials: the twang of country, the steady chug of 1960s rock, the undulating sheen of the Beach Boys, the honky-tonk hymns of the Band and the melodic symmetries of pop."[133]

Rolling Stone described Wilco as "one of America's most consistently interesting bands" and "America's foremost rock impressionists."

So back to the Convo....

Only 2 games left (unless we have a MAC tourney "play in" game)

Last chance w/students ("Ozone" reference intentionally omitted) in town game is BGSUCKS Sat 18.

As of now scheduled for 2:00 start, no TV (just ESPN 3). I don't think there is any special event this weekend.

Chances the Convo will be "rockin'"?

I'll there for sure. Hope I get to see a couple BG FBall players dunk and sink 3's (like I saw in Stroh Center) while we handily beat them....Oh - and a game finish alley oop slam by Dozier....

I'm clueless on the subject you are talking about, but I totally agree with this sentiment. This is one reason I don't like "stand for defense." It's contrived. If a student group started it, and the rest of the Convo crowd followed suit spontaneously, it would mean a lot more and I would respect it. Your comments remind me of the Simon and Garfunkel concert I went to years ago at the Convo with my then gf, now wife. They were so condescending to the audience and so full of themselves that it was sickening. By the end of their concert at least half the audience was booing them, and they had no idea why. Before this personal encounter I liked most of their music, after that I couldn't stand to listen to them.

The list of "great/famous" etc. artists who have been "boo'ed" en masse or off a stage at some point in their career is - well - Very LONG.......

Name a favorite of yours - I'm sure I can find a nasty "boo'ed", or "boo'ed off stage", or just did not even show up performance with a quick Google search......

I don't doubt what you say is true. Perhaps, it tells us more than we want to know about the true value of these groups to society and might be a clue that we should not, as a group, hold them in such high esteem. I should add that my oldest daughter and her friends once voted on the most nerdy Dad, and I won not only because of my amateur radio hobby and my high-tech orientation but because I knew less about popular culture than any of her friends' fathers. I'm actually quite proud of that award! ;-)

I applaud your award! "Nerdy" can mean a lot of different things - including a lot of positive definitions!

The "value" in my estimation is what you "personally" or as a "public/fans" get from the sum of the specific event or over time the artists expressions/contributions.

And to put this into the perspective of the thread subject start - The sum of my early experience and then through the decades in the Convo has been Very Positive. So - critiquing on occasion or during periods is sort of like "Neil Young was great except for that Neil Young and the Shocking Pinks album", or "Robert Di Nero was great except for that performance in Little Fockers". "Wilderness Campaign" ring a bell? :)

I'll take the challenge. Here are three - The Eagles, Pink Floyd and Harry Chapin. Google away.

And speaking of the Convo rocking - check this out:
