The offense was a problem even before Tony went out. The chemistry on that side of the floor just hasn't been there like it was last year. It's almost as if they put such an emphasis on the defensive side, which has been outstanding BTW, that the offense took a hit because of it.
Defenses are figuring out how to guard Ohio. Force them to work the ball inside and don't let their shooters get open looks. Carter's emergence in the paint is only going to help this team get better offensively. The more the defense collapses to shut him down, he'll have to find ways to kick out to shooters.
And I know some people don't like Doug Taylor's game, but here's a secret: he's got the best FG % of anyone on the team. Get him around the basket and it's going in the hoop more than it's not. If he and Jason can make up for what Tony brought to the table combined and maybe a little bit more they should be fine.
Mike Laster is getting better offensively. Gavin will do his 5/5/5 thing and I'll take that every night. If Jordy and KK can adjust to what's going on with Jason down in the paint, they should be able to put something together by late February/March. And Jaaron is still one of the best, if not the best passer in the league, and also one of the best at getting to the rim.
Where the team is going to struggle is what you saw last night. Guys like Steve Taylor and Isaiah Johnson are going to be force fed down Ohio's throat until proved they can be stopped. I'm more worried about them kicking out to open shooters though.
And backside rebounding has to get better too. It's gonna have to be a team effort on rebounding from now on. We can't just hope Jason and Doug are gonna be able to gobble everything up. EVERYONE needs to check their man and get the ball. Toledo had too many second chance opportunities last night.
