I believe he would have two after transferring if he chose to do so. I don't think the player loses a year of eligibility, they just have to sit out the transfer year.
You have 5 to play 4 once your clock runs. So yes, in this situation, he would lose a year and only have one season left.

That's right. I left out that thought initially. Injuries are of course the wildcard in this.
