Alan Swank, great recall on Eddie Hicks as the defender who shut down Dan Palombizio. I would venture to bet that far more students in 1985 knew who Dan Palombizio was as compared to today's students vis a vis Marcus Keene. This is not an indictment on the current student body, just a different sports world and mindset.

Sadly, it wouldn't surprise me if the attendance was less than in 1985 when Dan Palombizio and the Ball State Cardinals came to town. Now that's a MAC blast from the past. It was in 1985 and I remember it well. He was the anywhere from the first to third leading scorer (depending upon the game) in the nation and Coach Nee had the students fired up for that one. Here's a couple of links about that season, one of which is from the LA Times Feb. 1985. Interestingly enough, in one of these links he talks about a high school game in which he played when over 8,000+ showed up. Indiana high schools gyms, now that is another story.

Remember that game well. In his senior year, Eddie Hicks absolutely shut down Palombizio. Best Bobcat defender since 1979.
My proudest moment playing basketball in Grover was scoring on Eddie Hicks. In all honesty he wasn't exactly in shut down mode.

It is funny what a little old fashion defense can do. I don't want to sound like the old man here, but wouldn't it be nice if we could see that type of defense (Eddie Hicks 1985) and offensive shot making (Dave Jamerson and Snoopy Graham 1986) today? If only!

Will the winner be butts in seats (BIS) or what the athletic dept. reports? I assume the dept. is using tickets sold (or are they just padding the stats)? Against 'Kron the university reported 10101.Two posters chimed in, one thinking it was 7500, the other 8000 for BIS. I'd say they were about right. For Central, I'll predict 5500 BIS, with 7000 reported.
Our winner with a generous 7063 reported.

I would think my 6,100 in seats is about right

Pleasantly surprised, especially with the student crowd. Kids love that Chick-fil-A apparently...

My students were pretty aware. Students that don't know about games have little excuse (as I often tell them). The number of signs, banners, posters, etc. on campus has approached obnoxious levels, particularly this year. Some of my not so athletics-inclined faculty colleagues have expressed displeasure.

Funny story - A couple weeks ago, one of our more "sqeaky wheel" types got a flyer on his car for a basketball game. He - I kid you not - said that he might call athletics to request compensation for "potential damage" to his windshield wiper. Seriously? Another good reason to retire soon!

Passive. A lot of gawking at Keene hitting wild shots. Sadly the crowd seemed resigned to losing by mid-1st half.

I wanted us to win but I came for the show and wasn't disappointed. Got a text from a D 1 coach today asking if I went to the game and that Keene is the real deal. i agree 100%.

I really like to read the first part of this. The second part...well, yeah, I'd be pushing them to retire early if that's the worst part of their day.
