Arkley put his lead at the end of the article? I didn't know the 5th year possibility was even on the table.

"Campbell, who listens to gospel music to get up for games, believes in more than himself. He has hope, and faith. He believes Ohio will go on to win the MAC Tournament. He believes he has a shot at petitioning the NCAA for a fifth-year of eligibility. He believes he has what it takes to be a professional.

Despite reasons not to, Campbell simply believes.

“I’m not real big and religious, but I got faith,” he said. “I can do this.

“A fifth-year is an option maybe. That would be a game-changer,” Campbell adds with grin. “It’s a long shot, but there’s a chance though.”

He definitely has a shot at petitioning the NCAA for an extra year. The problem is he has little chance of getting it granted based on those that have tried before.

While that would be outstanding for Tony, and the team, there's this issue of scholarships that would need sorted out. As in, we already have 13 scholarships spoken for next year - unless someone departs for some reason.

That, and if he was granted that 5th year, what about KK, since we've talked about his potential extra year?

The thought of Tone and Carter together at the 5 and 4 next year is truly something to dream about but a longshot. Teams wouldn't know what to do with them. They both shoot from outside and both have a plethora of inside moves.

Unless Harley makes a miraculous recovery from his injury that has limited him his entire career I have to think that he will go the DJ Wingfield route and still be enrolled with a scholarship but not count against us so we would open up one more scholarship. It sounds like Wadley will leave as well but that is planned. If Khari plays, more power to him, but I hope he doesn't just come back and sit like Wadley did this year.

It's amazing to think we have weathered a bit of the Tony storm with 3 scholarship players on redshirts. That is three bodies we are without entirely in Wad, Khari and Gollon.

Well, there you guys go, getting my hopes up. A 5th for Tony would be huge for the team, as well as giving him another shot to improve his stock value for the pros.

I honestly don't know the answer to this question, so a little help please...what if Tony graduated and enrolled as a grad student, would that give him another year?

As for KK, I don't feel that another year of eligibility would help the team much. I would expect our seniors to be significant contributors in critical late-season games. He hasn't.

I think a 5th year for Tony is a real long shot, but I hope it comes to pass.

Here are the Medical Redshirt Requirements:

Basic Qualifications

To qualify for a medical redshirt, a basketball player must sustain an “incapacitating injury or illness.” The injury or illness does not have to be related to basketball, but must take place after the first day of classes in the athlete’s senior year of high school. To gain a medical redshirt for a specific season, the athlete’s illness or injury must occur before the first game of the second half of the team’s schedule. If the team plays an odd number of games, the exact midseason contest is considered part of the second half. For example, if a basketball team plays 25 games, the injury or illness must occur before the start of the team’s 13th game. Games played in postseason tournaments, such as a conference tournament or the NCAA or NIT tournaments, count among the team’s total games played.

Games Played

To gain a medical redshirt, the athlete cannot compete in more than 30 percent of her team’s games within a season, not counting contests officially designated as scrimmages or exhibition games. When such computations are made, fractions are rounded up. For example, if a team plays 27 games, the exact 30 percent mark is 8.1. For the purposes of medical redshirt eligibility, therefore, the player may compete in nine games and still be eligible for a medical redshirt.

Sixth Year

In cases where a player takes a standard, nonmedical redshirt season, then later is granted a medical redshirt, the player has six years in which to complete his four seasons of basketball eligibility.

Administration

The administration of a medical redshirt request is handled by a school’s conference. If the school is not a member of an athletic conference, the NCAA Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement administers the hardship request. The committee also reviews appeals of medical redshirt requests that are denied at the conference level. Medical documentation is required with every medical redshirt request.

So you are actually petitioning the MAC.

But the 30% thing isn't going to happen. He's played in 14 games out of 28. Ohio would have to play 48 games for him to get under the 30% plateau.

Yes, but they would apply for a waiver of that requirement. I think if he were under the 30% threshold that it would be a slam dunk. But just like Ricardo, who missed by 3 games, Tony is facing an uphill battle.

Usually the rule is that if you play more than 30% of your team's games you are not eligible for a Medical Redshirt. Tony has played 14 out of 27 games so far. To reach the 30% threshold we would have to play 46 games this season.

Best case scenario in the games played department: We end up as a 5-6 seed and play in 4 MAC tournament games, lose in the Conference finals and make the CBI. The CBI decides to expand to 64 teams this year and we make the finals there before winning in the third game of a best of 3. That still puts us at 42 games.

That's still 33% of our games played.

Since they round the 30% up - it's actually 44 games we'd have to play for TC to meet the requirement.

44*0.3 = 13.2 (rounded up to 14)
43*0.3 = 12.9 (rounded up to 13)

Now maybe he can argue that number down a game since he only played 3 minutes against Buffalo before the injury, but even then that would only drop the requirement from 44 team games to 41.

So basically, it ain't happening. He gone.

With all due respect to KK ... not sure an extra year from him benefits our program.

I wasn't suggesting it would. Rather, I was thinking that if KK can't get the waiver, how is Tony going to?

(it would be awesome, and OUr team would be formidable with Tony for one more year though!)

Ohio plans to make it to the MAC finals, and then simultaneously accept bids to the CBI, CIT, & Vegas Tourney...chartering flights all around the country and playing some split squad games to make all the games, and making the finals in all the tournaments to be able to hit the 41 mark.

nm the below only gets us to 40 games. My bad.

There is another way to get to 41 games:

1. lose to Fiami [really hate that thought],

2. earn the 5 seed,

3. win MAC tourney,

4. be assigned 1st round NCAA tourney game, and

5. win in the Big Dance until at least the Championship game.

Then. we argue that the 3 minutes of AC's play in his 14th game should be ignored. By then, the MAC will be so busy counting the cash inflow from Ohio's tournament run that those 3 minutes will be easy to ignore. Also, due to an amazing increase in March Madness viewership (due to Ohio's run of course), the NCAA committee is also blinded by the $$$ and follows suit. Bada-Bing.

But they do make exceptions sometimes right?

http://www.fightingillini.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6667

Tracy Abrams is going to be leaving UIllinois after 6 years of eligibility at age 25. I don't know the rules, but I'm assuming he got some sort of exception.

Wondering the same thing, Mcbin. TC doesn't qualify for a fifth year per NCAA regulations. But has there been any precedent of an exception to this rule? Or is it "president" of an exception?

I'm actually surprised he'd even consider returning to Ohio even if he was awarded an additional year. What does he have left to prove? Nothing. He's already won the conference's POY award - as a junior. Why risk another injury in college that could further hamper his professional future? I don't think he'll ever play in the NBA, nor is he NBA material IMO. But I do think he'd excell big time overseas and could make some real nice bank in the process. Coming back to Ohio would be a waste of his time, and money, at this point. He's ready for the next chapter in his career, which is playing pro ball, not squandering another year at Ohio to what, possibly win an award he's already won. He's already on his farewell tour now. I believe it would be a big mistake to undo it. I wish him well in his pro future, because he's ready now and he will succeed.

Because he didn't play a single game in the two seasons he missed.
