I would be stunned at a Geno Ford hire. Also would be surprised to see Boals walk away from Stony Brook after just one year.

Years ago it seemed like Cleveland State and Wright State were contenders. Sadly both have been eclipsed; Cleveland State by Akron and Kent, while Wright State has been undone by conference upstart Northern Kentucky. Cleveland State was going to be resurrected by Rollie Massimino. Sadly it didn't work out and Coach Massimino is still coaching in his 80s for some obscure Florida community college.

Paul Biancardi was suppose to take the Raiders of Wright State to new heights, but if I remember right after his firing he is employed by ESPN as some kind of high school recruiting coordinator.

I suppose if Geno needs the money Cleveland State can help pay the bills, but Coach Ford might want to consider his options before signing any contracts. I can't imagine Coach Boales doing nothing more than courteously returning the Vikings phone call and wishing them well.

Cleveland is a pro-sports town. With the right coach they should be able to contend in their league. But I doubt Cleveland State can ever do much more than that.

Youngstown State is open too due to retirement of Jerry Slocum. Roster has been somewhat in turmoil recently.

Not much in terms of legacy or culture. Really plays second fiddle to football. None the less they are in a Division 1 conference so there is a path to the dance.

Their last sustained success was during the Mike Rice Sr. days in the OVC.

Something tells me things would be a lot different at CSU if Anton Grady, Bryn Forbes, and Trey Lewis all didn't transfer.

Get a group of players that brings back a Mouse McFadden and his teammates and while it isn't LeBron height of excitement--the days of Coach Kevin Mackey seemed to produce in the Cleveland area as much or more excitement than the basketball Buckeyes have since Clark Kellogg.

I cheered hard for Mouse McFadden and Coach Kevin Mackey when they were leading the Vikings to glory in the mid 1980s. However, that's when the Cavaliers were the Cadaverliers and they played at Richfield. I remember being in Cleveland visiting a friend the season Rollie Massamino arrived. There was great hope, but the former national championship coach never lived up to the hype. Then Lebron came and the Vikings never again captured the city's imagination. Coach Massamino is in his 80s now coaching at some obscure small college in Florida, but that a whole different matter.

Maybe someone who knows more than me concerning the Missouri Valley Conference could comment. To me that's where Coach Groce should focus his efforts. Youngstown State certainly grabs everyone's attention in Youngstown, but then again prospective coaches may want to ask Jim Tressel how serious he is concerning basketball. While they are asking questions, they might want to ask him how the Penguins let the nation's leading scorer get away to of all places Central Michigan.

Yes, he left CSU, but Sonny Johnson would be a guy to give that program a little local lift. Tied into the local recruiting scene, AAU circuit, and kids love playing for him. They could do much worse with the likely random low level assistant or former HC trying to get back on their feet.

That's a big, big IF too. Stony Brook is a program on the rise, and is a year removed from the tournament, and they have a shiny newly renovated arena on a real college campus. Cleveland State is a program in a pro-sports city, on a primarily commuter campus, that is not on the rise. While they have history, there's no good reason for Boals to come to Cleveland after a year at Stony Brook.

I may be biased because im a grad student at CSU, but the Wolstein Center is a very nice on campus facility. It is way nicer than those dumps in Akron and Kent and just a step below the Convo. CSU's campus is growing and a large student housing facility is going up right across the street at Euclid and 18th. I think a coach with Ohio ties could do well at CSU if they can keep a decent amount of the local guys in town. The former Waters assistant listed in Pluto's article seems like he would be a perfect fit imo

Cleveland State has a huge relatively new arena, they practice with the Cavs sometimes.The cost of living is much better. The talent pool is there $600,000 in Cleveland get you a mansion and your assistants will have a nice standard of living, $375,000 gets you a nice apartment in Long Island. It is something that should be considered.

I agree that Wolstein is nice. It's also a costly albatross that CSU has openly discussed tearing down. Running it costs a lot more per year than it brings in. It was conceived and constructed when it would have been the only multipurpose arena in downtown Cleveland. Six years later, Quicken Loans Arena opened, and the business plan for Wolstein Center went up in flames.
