I just looked at the MAC standings and saw that Western is the worst team in the league. Are we getting our ROI on 550K?
No, we are not getting our ROI! It's hard to believe that we couldn't have offered someone much less to produce the same results. Phillips still has a lot of work to do.
Since you are clearly a basketball genius, name three better coaches we could have/should have chosen from when Jim Christian left. The only thing I miss about Groce compared to Saul is style of play, and much of that had to do with who his PG was. That's it.
This guy and his family are an outstanding fit for Athens and Ohio University. This staff has yet to recruit a bad egg, and they went to the MAC Semi's in year two. Tony's injury is a killer to any team, and any coaching staff. If you can't see that, and how it massively changes the season, I don't know what else to say. With Tony, this team had legit NCAA aspirations. Without him, the road is tougher, but it's still possible. Last year they were playing their best hoops at the end of the year. If they do the same this year, it's still possible.
Thanks Ry
As usual, when I saw this I typed out a well constructed and thoughtful response about the douchiness of repetitively using the 550K as a stick to beat Saul with as has been done following the Iona, EMU and WKU losses by this same poster. I looked at the character that has been recruited in the members of this team, the classroom performance, the diligence in recruiting and the loss of Tone. I had about a small novel constructed as to how well this coach and staff have done in righting the ship and ensuring movement forward to continue the trajectory up since I first got here in 07. You summarized it nicely.
I usually have a 24 hour rule so I was happy to see you took the time. In the interim I took the time to look and scour tO$U, Indiana, Illinois, Butler and a few other boards where hoopheads reside and have teams currently in a funk. NO ONE has a thread or even a poster contributing where they are questioning the salary. ALL have coaches making over 2 million dollars per year but they understand the value of the position in THEIR university and how competitive they want to be. THey understand the value of a coach and while the fanbase will criticize every minute detail of a performance and lust for blood and a place to affix blame ....they all know the money to hire a decent coach is part of the program and plan.
What are we getting for our 550K?, Good students (No bert, ernies or AB's, no domestic abuse, no dismissals and failed drug tests, no one leaving for funerals and not returning, no chasing around to classes or assigning adults to follow and ensure the kids get there among other things) Good character athletes that represent us well and we as a fanbase can be proud of, Good sportsmen. We are still competitive despite the challenges of personnel and injuries,we have a good steward of the program that loves the U...the only thing we still have is the challenge of closing out games and living up to the expectations of the fanbase. Saul wants to succeed and stay here enjoying the Athens community and coaching at Ohio.....unless we start becoming one of those deplorable fanbases and hanging his salary over his head and beating him with it. Talk about the game and decisions and lack of player execution or motivation and recruiting gaffes. Talk about how it is coaches fault and there is no offense and the defense has no Identity like they ..do at Illinois..but the salary is off limits IMHO as it is the reality of what it takes to compete no matter who you sre in these 351 schools ....lest you think we should cut it a couple hundred grand and find us an up and comer on the cheap.
