This is weird. Man...Dambrot is odd. You do this now...after you just lost the MAC Championship to a team not named OHIO?

Akron head coach Keith Dambrot just apologized to Ohio's Jaaron Simmons in regards to a comment he made about him earlier in the year

Arkley asked him a question in the post game press conference, and KD used the question to "get some things off his chest" towards Arkley and apologize to Simmons. Transcript in the link below...

Saw that and Arkley is being way too nice on twitter about the situation. No doubt...Dambrot put on his bully hat and comes off looking like an ass. His first sentence tells you all you need to know about Dambrot.

Arkley seems a little miffed by it, but mainly seems to be tired of talking about it. Said they talked through it more after the presser.

Weird twist: Arkley didn't even ask the question in the presser. Dambrot either had the wrong guy or decided this was his best shot to shoehorn in something he was determined to say.

Dambrot has some Nixon in him, loves to play up the part of being kicked around and not loved.

What exactly did Dambrot say about Simmons in the first place? I don't seem to remember any comments that stood out to me, so clearly I missed something.

Basic gist of it: when Jaaron went off for 38 in the Convo earlier this year, Dambrot more or less said he wouldn't be able to shoot that well again even if left wide open. Paraphrasing, but that's how I interpreted it.

Hmmmmm. So, I wonder what Dambrot thinks was being misconstrued? He took a shot at Simmons. And, Dambrot doesn't have a reputation as being a lovable jokester like Charlie Coles. I guess that sort of back handed apology is the best you get with Dambrot. Too bad. Dambrot's teams have dominated the MAC for going on 10 years now. Yet I have trouble respecting him.

I think the people who are still mad about what Dambrot said are suffering from confirmation bias. They already think Dambrot's a jerk, so they assume this was a shot at a player because that's what a jerk would do. If you strip away the antipathy most of us have for Akron, it was just a coach saying that a guy having a career game is not a reason to question his team or feel terrible about a loss.

Not really an accurate representation of what he said. He was talking about how they prepared for and defended us. He mentioned the fact that they couldn't have predicted Jaaron going 5 for 5 from 3 point range, and referenced his shooting percentage. It was pretty much just fact based.

He literally said "I'm not sure if you don't guard Jaaron Simmons at all from the three line he could get 38."

Referencing his shooting percentage would be one thing. But saying a D1 college basketball player of Jaaron's caliber wouldn't score that many points even if left wide open? Cmon. He also shot 63% from the field that day and had 13 free throw makes. He dominated the entire game.

+1 Exactly!

I really am not the greatest Dambrot fan, but I take his apology at face value, as I do his original statement that statistically it would be hard for JS to repeat what he had done against Akron in that game. His first statement wasn't artfully phrased, but I really don't think he meant to dis JS and/or to give OHIO locker room bulletin board material for the next game with them.

::Dambrot apologizes to Simmons, now owes apology to Jason Arkley::

That pretty much tells you what you need to know about Keith Dambrot.

Like I posted elsewhere, I don't think Dambrot meant anything negative. Just talking hoop strategy like you would with other coaches.

Dambrot said he truned down USF according to report by Elton. Elton also uses ZipsNation talk in his article.

Link: http://www.cleveland.com/sports/college/index.ssf/2017/03/akron_zips_open_nit_at_houston.html

Excerpt:

Already Akron coach Keith Dambrot has been approached by South Florida to leave the Zips for some sunshine.

"I turned them down,'' Dambrot said.

That may or may not make Akron fans happy. The most successful coach in the Mid-American Conference, amazingly, is currently under chat room review as the Zips (26-8) prepare for a trip to Houston to play the Houston Cougars in the NIT on Wednesday night at 7:30.

My cousin played for Dambrot as a walk on for 4 years. He made several promises he couldn't keep and even on their senior day in a game that was irrelevant to them (they lost anyways), my cousin still didn't touch the floor. He's a poor excuse for a human.
