It must suck to be those of you who gave a crap about this game. This game has no bearing on OUr season and other than upsetting you when we play bad, it does not matter at the ultimate goal. Do I want to go 30-0? Yes, but it ain't happening. This game means nothing.

Manhandled by App State athleticism and size.

Ohio went 0-4 against Sun Belt teams in 2024-2025.

The loss doesn’t bother me, but it gives zero confidence that we can beat an Akron or a Toledo or a Miami in Cleveland. Would’ve liked to not be absolutely embarrassed by a Sun Belt team on our home court.

This team is just so hard to watch. They do so many fundamental things poorly.
Just get Clayton out of there. He is horrible today.

We're 2-18 from 3.

Is that good?

Even better is two passes out of bounds without any pressure on you.
We don’t even get a chance to miss a three!

We need a 13-point comeback in the last 4 minutes…
while we have scored 13 TOTAL points this half!

Lone bright spot has been Elijah. He has the confidence and athleticism to match up with these guys. (Edit: jinxed him - 2 or 3 out of control turnovers since then)

I'll add - AJ Clayton is immensely important to our teams success.

That being said, the only value he adds on defense is rebounds and blocked shots. However, overall, he's a truly terrible defender. He jumps and lunges at every shot fake, he's easily muscled on the block and he has slow feet guarding the ball screen or ball handler on the perimeter.

None of this is news, obviously.

But if he's gonna give you a donut offensively, why is he on the floor exactly?

I dunno, I'm torn between saying I'm fine with him getting the rust off and getting his feet under him in a meaningless non-con game, and saying if this is what he's giving you sit his butt on the bench.

Really liked Preston today not sugarcoating anything. He told it like it was and what Ohio lacks.

Agree…. I would not have played Clayton in the last 12 minutes of this basketball game. Just an atrocious game from #23. Didn’t seem like he was too interested in wanting to mix it up and go against these athletic guys today.

The only AJ worth anything today is AJ Brown. Sheldon and Clayton should be on the bench.

+1. Honest, balanced, and insightful commentary from the young man.

Has Clayton ever been held to 0 points before. What's the issue with this guy since the injury?
I still will never know why a team can play well in the first half and just mail the second half in. Can someone explain how this happens?

Yes - we got a lot of points in the first half from dribble drives from Shereef and (unexpectedly) from Elliott both driving and posting his man. App State made defensive adjustments with their on-ball defense in the 2nd half to shut that down.

Pavs can't drive against anyone quicker than a D3 guard.

We have no post players (outside Searls who barely saw the floor).

Which left our offense to be jack 3s, or hope for steals/transition.

We shot 15% from 3 and App State didn't turn the ball over.

Game over.

At what point does the recruiting philosophy change? Did anyone think that Ohio would lose to three Sun Belt teams this season?

And all 3 teams are bigger, stronger and way more athletic than this squad.

It’s embarrassing.

"Athletes are for the track team, not basketball."

I read it right here on this forum when Saul was the coach.

Green cat, you really believe that? Do you watch any basketball on TV on the top leagues. Or even the good mid majors? They all have guys much more athletic than us. Let’s face it no offense to Jeff but he tends to recruit big slow, white guy much like he was. They may be good bench players, but they’re not gonna win your championships. Let the discussion begin!

Of course I don't believe it. I didn't believe it when we signed the kid who looked like Jesus that transferred to Walsh, or the juco forward who was not even a starter at the junior college, etc, etc.

I sort of figured as much. Just checking… I think I’ve told the story about Bob Huggins. He would say I just recruit athletes. I can make a basketball player out of them. But there are a lot of basketball players that I can’t make athletes out of. I think that’s the kind of kid we are getting.

I am so tired of hearing our coach say we get outbid for bigs. Appalachian State is finding a way to make it happen and so are many other mid-majors. We have now gone two consecutive seasons without a starting true “big” who can give us 25 to 30 minutes of solid basketball. We can’t compete for championships with the current recruiting philosophy.

What you're missing is the bigger picture and the years ahead. Sibs Weekend is a great recruiting tool for the university and in many cases, gets current students in the Convo who might not normally go. When you have all those new eyes on the game and you lay an egg, many of those folks just won't come back.

Six point lead with Clayton putting up a goose egg at the half. I have to believe that will change significantly in the second half. Really wish Boals would play more of Sheldon and Searls for some of Elmore’s minutes. He is out of sync. His minutes should decrease and he should not be getting more minutes in any game over Elliott moving forward.
It certainly changed significantly in the second half. That was gross.

Could you blame them? Yikes. That was a putrid game.
