Seems to me if we don't land our portal big (minus Vic) by May 15th that we might be in the very same spot we were a year ago on this topic.
I'm hoping this time around the staff knows what's going to be required (from an NIL standpoint) in order to land contributing size and prepared for it.

New bigs staff is following:

Bruce Zhang, St. Louis
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/...

Abou Osmane, Xavier/North Texas
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/...

Khouri Carvey, Brunswick CC/Morehead State
https://www.gobccsports.com/sports/mbkb/2022-23/bios/carv...

Adam Afifi, Chico State (D2)/Cal State Northridge
https://chicowildcats.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/a...

Justice Ajogbor
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/...

Worth noting Carvey was a JUCO All-American as a freshman. Signed with Morehead State but then was granted released after the coach took James Madison job.

Osmane a bounce back guy and also from Brooklyn (s/o greencat).

Ajogbor would classify as that rim protector we desperately need. Averaged 3 BPG this past season.

Zhang and Afifi are just kinda eh, but would be size.
Justice Ajogbor to St. John’s.

Dikembe Mutombo's son Ryan Mutombo (Georgetown)

In the portal today

7-2/265

Other h.s. offers included:

Arizona
Florida State
Clemson
Georgia
Tennessee
Texas A&M
Vanderbilt
Virginia Tech

If a kid is from a rich home, does that mean no NIL $$ is needed?

Bellarmine 6'10 center Langdon Hatton is in the portal. Averaged 10/7. Spent first two years at William and Mary. We offered out of high school.

Looks like his best game was 27/12 vs a .500-ish Kennesaw St. before fouling out.

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/split...

Good numbers on a really bad team.

For comparison, his teammate Bash Wieland, who averaged 14 ppg at Bellarmine, entered the portal and landed at Chattanooga. So that could be the type of school that goes for him, unless just being 6'10" and not a complete trainwreck is enough for P5s to go after him.

11/9 against BYU, 10/9 against Utah, and 14/6 against K-State. Good numbers against good teams.

Unsure if his 6’10 frame gets him to a higher level or not, but would gladly take the kid.

Close enough. Get him up here for a visit.

Bonus: His 3 point stroke looks legit in the film clips.

Sounds like he’ll have options to go up a level.

Lots of mid-majors on that list.

Almost 70% of the prospects remain available.

#BuyersMarket

Players have until tomorrow night to enter. But visits and all will continue.

Agree. A front court player of any size and play style with multiple years of eligibility remaining would be ideal.

But that's sad for St. Francis and is telling of the state of the sport. The kid has a pretty good freshman season and he believes the "right" move is to bolt. Now, SFU was only 8-22 and that's down from the year prior, so maybe there's bad culture or a future he doesn't believe in, but how is SFU supposed to build themselves back up?

Cases like this only make me wonder how many of our own all-time "greats" that arrived as freshman and finished their eligibility here would have left if the current NIL and transfer portal existed in their time? Gary? Leon? Jerome? DJ? Tony? Only thing I can say with certainty is Fears would have entered the portal before he left Bridgestone Arena after the Florida loss.

Speaking of Saint Francis, they've had the same coach for last 12 years and have won only 36 games in the last four years. They sure are riding a wave of an NIT berth in 2019. What are they doing over there?

This kid will be perfect for us. No need for him to shoot 3s. He attacks the rim and he crashes the glass. He could take a year to get acclimated and grow under Boals' post direction. If we could add a kid like him, he'd be a great energy guy off the bench. Not sure if he's down for that after his freshman year at St. Francis. That's the issue we have. We have quality depth. Do you unseat a vet or do you come in and join a winner and be happy getting 20 mins off the bench?

There's also 361 D1 schools. That leaves around 3-4 players per school to add. Let's say half of that 1300 are bigs. That goes down 1-2, if schools are lucky.

Options are scarce. Wilborn would be a fantastic add.

I do wonder if the PT convo is the biggest hurdle this portal season. AJC is a lock and I think Hadaway has earned the starting 4 (or at least inside track) job until he loses it.

So we only have to out-bid 28 other schools? Cool. I'd minimize resources used on him unless we get a real warm fuzzy we were in his top 2/3. Otherwise likely futile.

There's not a school on that list outside of Clemson and Boston College of the ACC that we shouldn't be able to go toe-to-toe with. Maybe we can't hang with St. Louis or VCU, but the others we absolutely should be able to. We could be in the Top 7-8ish programs of that list.

I think you may have missed OSU, Louisville, UC, Xavier, Notre Dame, Colorado State, and to a lesser extent -- WKU coming off a tourney appearance. Even though both coaches left, I'd probably put Drake and Indiana State above us.

With almost 70% of the 1900+ guys in the portal remaining, we should be able to get a guy who compares favorably to him or is stronger in different areas for possibly less NIL $$. Maybe he's 6-8 or 6-9 instead of 6-10. We need the college hoops version of Chad Bradford and Scott Hatteberg of Billy Beane's 2002 Oakland A's. It can be done.

Would I yank "y'alls" chain about something as important as basketball?
