I do hope he stays. But if he leaves, so what? It’s his choice. Life goes on. What is truly funny are these half baked ideas to pay what we can’t afford and for what? So you can up your cocktail banter and say your Alma Mater is paying our coach 1M per? I guess you had Econ 101 at 8am and were sleeping off your Swanky’s hangover.
You're grouchy. It is fun when our basketball team is good. In college basketball, having a good coach is arguably the primary ingredient for having a good basketball team. We have a good coach, and we want to keep him. There's a lot of energy around the program after our best start in school history, so we're looking for things to discuss and/or theorize about. One of those things is what we can possibly do to retain the aforementioned coach for as long as possible. That's a pretty reasonable perspective/discussion.

I’m not going to be popular but send football down to fcs to make it happen. We’ve often been on the fringe of being a big time basketball school. I’d rather be in the tournament every couple of years than in a bowl game with 10 percent of the national interest. Transfer portal is also going to slaughter us if we don’t make bball a priority. It’s criminal to ask student fees to cover athletics. If we dropped to I-AA would we also be able to cut some other expensive sports— men and women?
I'm against cutting any teams
I would be in favor of the MAC revisiting adding WKU and another geographically sensible school without the word "middle" in it's name. Eff that school for tanking the plan that was in place last fall which WKU was already fully committed to. I would still love to see the Chattanooga Mocs move up to D-1 in football. It would be a bit of a haul to most MAC schools but it's right between two huge major airports and a great place to visit. Non-stops flight from all over MAC territory on Southwest to both airports.

You may not have noticed or may not care that I’ve somewhat sided with you in this thread, but it’s mighty daft to be on a fan board discussing a role that is crucial to the success of any program and claim it doesn’t matter.

So to indulge you, yes life would go on, but the team would implode thanks to new transfer rules, the program would scramble to find a quality coach that you would invariably declare overpaid and we’d go from the top of the conference to rebuilding in a day. It would suck for any fan.

The university chooses to field athletic teams and compete in an FBS conference. It’s expensive. You’re on this board enough to know these things - and active enough that you clearly care about the success of the program. Yet you reliably feign disinterest and act outraged that the university dares to spend what it can to generate the best possible results.

I think Ohio needs to renegotiate Boals contract based on his performance this year.
It could be along any of these ideas;
1) Term extension
2) Term extension with bonus clauses for performance
3) Term extension with a hefty raise

I do prefer that he stays, but it's up to him. If he leaves then life goes on. But there is financial reality that some are overlooking.

I'll give you an example in Cal Ripken. He wanted to stay with one team and he made arrangements with the Orioles so he could stay. He certainly could have made way more money in free agency, but he wanted to be a lifer with one team. There is something to be said for that. Stability for your family. Building relationships that don't end every few years

Jeff Boals is an alumnus and he likely has thought what it might be like to be a lifer with the Bobcats or be a social climber and chase the money and the dream of winning a national championship. It's his decision.

I think it would be foolish to throw money at him that we don't have. He makes very good money and he can stay for a long time if he wishes and continues to be successful. They call it the hometown discount. Who knows? if he stays long enough he may want to change the sign at Swanky's and call it "Boalsy's"!

I'm right with you on this. I do think its time to talk extension after this season, absolutely. I don't, however, think that extension should be the 10 year million $ buyout full send offer. Would I love it if Boals signed on the dotted line for that type of extension? Obviously, but the optics of that type of offer could risk the great relationship both parties have at the moment.

I hope none of the people here ever run a business.

Giving a 10-15 year contract has to be one of the dumbest propositions of all time. I can't think of a better license to be lazy and stagnant. Jesus.

It was moronic in 2022 and it's moronic in 2024.

What about a lifetime contract?

Simply my attempt to remind this board how schizophrenic it is.

I get the point. But "the board" is not an individual and shouldn't be held accountable as such.
