There's been a lot of talk here on Groce.
It seems Matta at OSU should be feeling some heat too.
Any word on how secure his job is ?
Looks like he will be back for next year at a minimum…

A couple buddies and I were talking about this yesterday afternoon while watching the B1G final. The more we talked and discussed it, the more we couldn't figured out how he's still there. The trend has been in the wrong direction for 2-3 years. They've struggled to get good players to become better. Their incoming freshmen, at this point, don't give the impression of being game changers for the program. It looks So the major improvement needed would seem like it has to come from within unless they're able to get a late signee or grad transfer. It's fascinating to me, because I'm of the opinion that, if this were football, Urban would have been fired last year because that's the way it seems to work in Columbus.
First, you and your buddies don't have a clue about basketball. You may be able to give Mr. Miyagi and the Karate Kid some lessons on car washing. Illinois has the number 12 recruiting class. Player development, are we serious? He made a tourney there along with two NIT's. John Groce will get back on his feet, hopefully Illinois does well in the future as well. Do you know how many morals (moral victories) we would derive out of an NIT invite and the number 12 recruiting class. We would spin a moral out of having the number 12 recruiting class in the MAC. The medi's would be rocking, let's stop the JG bashing.
Seems to me he is talking about Matta and not Groce....

He's not even talking about Groce here. Jesus, man.

John Groce leaves Illinois with a number 12 rated recruiting class coming, if they do not decommit. Impatience in the alumni ranks of major college programs and the pressure they put to bear on athletic directors is hard to underestimate. Patience would have paid off long term at Illinois. Who knows what will happen with the next coach.
Yes. Impatience with coaches, both pro and college, drives me crazy. Illinois made a bad move here, in my opinion.

Going 37–53 in the B1G and having five years to build the program doesn't strike me as a ton of impatience.

Someone said this earlier, Groce's rule was not to accept a position in a school that is not "top 3" in the Conference. Don't tell the Illini faithful this, but U of I is a far cry from one of the top 3 in the B1G. Groce should have stuck around Athens, with the team he'd built, and hold out for a Shaka Smart or a Brad Stevens deal.

Outside of the JC years, I kind of like where things are, right now, with Saul. With that said, next season needs to be special.

I was a big, big fan of Groce, and I agree. Last year he deserved a pass on, but impatience with this season isn't unreasonable. I'm not saying he deserved the dismissal, but I get the impatience some might have.

That said, if schools were as impatient 35 years ago as they are today, we might not be talking about Mike Krzyzewski the Duke legend. We might be talking about him as a one time Duke Coach. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Krzyzewski

It's not safe to assume that Illinois will find a better coach, or be able to retain the recruiting class. If so, they may end up being a couple years behind recruiting wise, and potentially repeating this impatience in a few years. Time will tell.

That's probably true. Over the years I have read several articles that showed Coach K had to have some help to stay at Duke given his initial few seasons. Well written and researched pieces. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/11... / is an example.

Excellent hire for Illinois, not so good for the kids at Oklahoma State.

WOW! I did not see this coming. Obviously that Big Ten money was a huge factor in getting Underwood to leave Oklahoma State. I thought it was a mis-print or his brother when they announced that move.

T. Boone Pickens built them a football stadium but I gotta wonder if Okla St spent peanuts on the b-ball program.

went from 1 M to 3M AD and him were at odds reading tweets. AD said je would renegotiate based on production. He produced, no negotiation. Put a ring on it if you like it.....

I think Lovie and he are both really good hires along with the recent vball pick up. Whitman is doing well out there....

From being a poorly ran athletic department. I've consistently said they're one of the traditionally worse ran athletic dept's in the country with how they're managed. But with Whitman calling shots, this was a move that was pretty darn savvy. This kind of hire just doesn't happen overnight either, which means Illinois and Whitman had their guy in their sights for at least a few weeks.
