A lot depends on the direction of the program. My typical answer would be 5 years. Give the guy or gal a chance to get all his/her players in there. But 5 years is also typically the length of the entry contract for most coaches. Meaning that after year 4 you are forced to either extend him or fire him. 2 years without a big personal scandal is outrageous especially when it's players griping about playing time.
Agree with this unless it becomes painfully obvious it is not working out. Like a 5-20 hoops season or back to back 1-10 football seasons with no better recruits on the way.
It is easier for the AD to side with students and their helicopter parents and get rid of a coach. Whether they are right or not. Especially with an out-of-the-spotlight sport like D2 womens basketball. Not saying I like that. But, I'm guessing it happens more than we think.
