If Groce to Miami becomes a reality...

...there is no question which school is our biggest rival. I know Akron has become more of a "rival" in basketball recently, but if this happens Miami is at the top of the list and never getting dethroned. Ever.

Selfishly, I hope this doesn't happen. I want to be able to root for him to do well, but at Miami? That's a tough ask for me.

This.

From an outsider/rational perspective - it's a perfectly fine/logical place for him to land and continue his coaching career.

From somebody who was one of us though - I can't wrap my brain around it. I wouldn't know whether to applaud him or boo him. I'd love him for the fond memories and hate him all the more because of the memories.

Call it the irrational fan in me, but I refused to even step foot on Oxford Tech's campus for a recruiting visit back when I played. My parents thought I was crazy but I told them, flat out, there's no way I would EVER play for that school - so why waste the time? That's how much I loathe that school. How in the WORLD could one of ours not feel the same as I did? Does. Not. Compute.

He 's not one of ours... And his first intro to coaching came there with Herb Sendeck. While he just out of Taylor, teaching math and guiding the "best prepared freshman team there ever was according to long time hoops fans as a freshman Coach at Jay CO HS he was a volunteer with Herb and running back and forth from Portland IN to Oxford straight down US27 to get his intro. From there Herb took him to NC as Herb was impressed with his drive and work ethic.

He was not one of ours. Though they still love the Athens folks and the U they are not entrenched like some of us. The most immediate things are proximity to family, hers in Southern IN and his in Danville IN and recruiting roots. He would be a good score.... but I would hate it.

I like it because the intensity of the rivalry would at least be restored.

He'd never be Charlie but he would bring Charlie's appreciation for what we have here and would acknowledge it. That Ozone be rocking. Bringing it on - this league needs some excitement.

I hope it happens
1. Miami will get better and become relevant which is good for MAC
2. Renews the rivalry
3. Will stop some on this board from gushing over him like school girls.

Come on JG make it happen.

its the best thing that could happen to the rivalry.

Like Charlie Coles said "If this conference is going to be real good then Ohio and Miami have to be real good too." We all loved Charlie, it didn't mean we hated Miami less, it just means we enjoyed hating them more because we knew the feeling was mutual.

You think Gary Trent day was big, wait till DJ Cooper hangs his jersey during halftime of a game vs a Groce lead Miami team.

The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Bring it on.

It would make the conference better, in that sense I'd be for it. I'd rather him to BSU or anywhere else, but oh well if it has to be Miami.

Maybe we never knew it but he really enjoyed quiet arenas like EMU & Miami. But seriously I think it's perfectly in the middle of where most of their families are.

The Miami/Ohio thing doesn't surprise me a bit... There's very little loyalty when there's 6 & 7 figure salaries for these coaches on the line. Saban LSU/Bama. Pitino UK/Louisville. Grunk. I'm sure there are dozens more.

But I think they brought in a bunch of freshmen this past year. Most not impressive. Whoever gets in that HC seat is gonna have to run a lot of guys off to get their own squad, or wait a while to make it happen.

My only guess that he wouldn't do it is because they seem to be a few years off from even being the stepping stone school that he needs. And I would imagine he wants his next shot at the 'big time' asap.

I've only heard Groce's name in connection with Miami and Duquesne. As bad of a job Duquesne is, I imagine they will pay more than twice what Miami can pay.

Seeing the types of players Groce would bring into Miami over the next few years compared to us would be a real punch in the gut. He is going to run recruiting circles around Saul unfortunately.

I don't understand this attitude.

We all have great memories of two NCAA runs with Groce, but it seems like his biggest fans on this board only remember those runs. He was barely above .500 in MAC play and never came close to dominating the league. I'm not downplaying those runs, but they were improbable and both years involved razor thin margins in the MAC tournament. One misstep in 2010 and even the CIT doesn't want Ohio. The 2012 MAC tournament? We were at three seed that squeaked past #2 Buffalo by three and won the final by a single point in a dogfight with Akron. We weren't even close to the regular season championship and one different ball bounce would have had us in the CBI. People remember Groce's teams as dominant when they were anything but.

Yup, Groce swung for the fences when recruiting, but where's the evidence that Saul does not? Both Groce and Saul had some misses on recruiting, which is par for the course in midmajor hoops. Slamming Saul's recruiting is pretty much a way of saying we don't have good players. I don't agree with that thesis.

I wish him well, even at Miami. As Don Corleone said "It's business, not personal". It's true that Duquesne would pay more than Miami, but can you win at Duquesne? I think the Miami job is better for his long term career. He got his payday once and hope he saved his money.

Agree completely with Recovering Journalist. Groce also is now tarnished by his failure at Illinois.

It could be worst, a big school could take Kent State's coach and Kent State could hire Groce, putting Groce right outside of Cleveland and five hours west of Chicago and two hours west of Pittsburgh. He already has inroads in Cleveland and Chicago and he would have good athletes returning along with the chance of Kipper Nichols following him home.

Agree. Groce is not the Pied Piper of the coaching world. Because of his success in march madness (he has one more victory than Saul) some folks here have an inflated view of his place in the coaching circle. Can you say "Stan Heath"?

I think he has two more victories and two more appearances than Saul. Saul was hot when we got him, hopefully next year is OUr year. Groce will be good in the MAC, he is a very good recruiter.

Chicago is what did him in as much as anything. If you're willing to play the AAU game up there, they love you. I don't think he was willing to play that game. And before you say but he got DJ Cooper from Chicago, we're comparing a school in Appalachia with the premier school in the state of Illinois.

I'm not counting what he did at Illinois. Anyone can get them to the NCAA tournament....oh wait.
