How hot is Chris Holtmann going to be after the next 2-3 weeks? If Butler makes the predicted run, he will shoot up a number of coaching hire talks (NC State, Illinois, OSU?, TBD). Everyone gets all interested in Groce's next stop, But Holtmann is now the branch of the Ohio coaching tree that is very much the golden boy (and most respected).

Good luck to him!

Ohio coaching tree? I'd say Taylor coaching tree where he and Groce both played ball and coached under Paul Patterson. I seriously doubt if Illinois would take him because of that connection. That said, he's a very good coach.

I agree with you. He and his staff have brought Butler to a higher level. You have to think his phone (or his agent's phone) will ring in a few weeks. That said, he's done so well, and Butler has grown so quickly within the Big East, that he's in a position where he's already in a top job. NC State, Illinois, frankly might be steps down now at this point. OSU, unless they switch course, have already thrown support behind Thad for next year.

Similar thoughts here. If Butler was still in the Horizon League I would definitely see him moving on. But they are an upper tier Big East team and a school that has chosen to make men's hoops the primary face of their athletic program (meaning no FBS football to compete with). There is no ceiling for him there in my opinion and I won't be shocked if the Bulldogs are the only team from Indiana to make it out of the first week of NCAA tourney action.

He may be wise to keep building up Butler until a dream job opens up. Places like NC State, Illinois etc. while usually good and with championship banners hanging in the rafters, are a major career risk right now IMHO.

What championship banners are hanging at Illinois? That job is not that good, even with a lot of money to spend.

Well the 1915 (Helms and Premo-Porretta retroactive selection) of course!

Sorry I meant Big 10, tourney appearances, national runner up etc. Just saying their history isn't entirely horrible.

You CAN get to the Final Four at Illinois or NC State. They're not Depaul or Penn State.

20 page thread already discussing his status on my Butler board https://butlerhoops.com/forum/index.php?threads/who-will-... /

I have not checked the other Butler boards but suspect more discussion on the subject as those terms to be a little more wide open, unrestrained and negative

I'm thinking about "dream job", and where else is better. It would have to be a Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, or UNC type of job at this point, wouldn't it?

Great story.
I listened to Chris Mack today on Mike and Mike. They asked about the lure of IU or bigger jobs. He discussed playing Sean and the nature of X and that it was not the same X where he played. I think Chris and Chris both see that they are in bigger places already. That the MCC/A10/Horizon schools they were are solidly big time and have move up. They did not have to aspire to higher places as the higher places are what their Universities have become while they were busy coaching and it snuck up on them...both enjoy their current gigs. I would be surprised after listening if either has one foot out the door for anything but a Major Blue Blood posting. Even if Alford leaves the LA scene to come home I do not see either one jumping at that one.

And I sure do not see Holt wanting to jump back into Patterson's seat at Taylor ;)

Agreed. Thanks for sharing that. Love seeing coaches and their family be more than just basketball coaches.
