Trent is definitely the GOAT. We need some depth for next year. We got into a 3 minute scoring lull before Jaaron scored 9 of of our last 12 points. We need to build off of the year. Every game that we lost was due to scoring droughts and allowing teams to score easily in the paint. These are two thing that can be addressed. Hopefully, Saul can put it together next year.

We blew our opportunity to really take this program to another level following the Sweet 16 season. I'm not talking Elite 8 stuff...but a 5 year run of 3 trips to NCAA. Obviously, Groce leaving hurt and LaVert going to Michigan....but the program should have been in a position to go to multiple NCAA Tourneys in last 5 years.

Hard to believe we had N'dour and Campbell with no tourney appearances. Ouch. I'm not down on Saul though. Players seem to love to play for him. No bad apples with Saul's guys. Gotta believe when we get back to the tourney, we make our mark.

The five years no dance part is nothing. Ohio is always in the hunt in the MAC. Ohio has probably had more talented teams on paper that have fallen short in recent years whereas ones not quite as good have actually won the title. It's more or less a wash there and all balances out. One thing I will say is, Ohio's the pick to win it next year. I'll put Ohio up against any MAC team next season. In fact, I think Ohio is going to win the MAC in both football and basketball next year, and to the best of my knowledge, I don't think that's ever been done before.

This team was a NCAA team until Campbell went down. We were unbeaten in the MAC until that happened. I think with Campbell we run Big dog off the court playing three games in a row. Campbell would have fouled Hall out no question. Saul has to be judged with his recruiting classes. So far it looks pretty good. We got Block, Dartis, Kaminski(transfer),Simmons(transfer), Taylor, Carter and Culver looking like very solid players. Next year with a senior all-conference point guard plus tons of talent around him should put us in the mix. If the freshmen coming in can give us something I like our chances. Akron, Kent and Buffalo all lose their top bigs. We lost our bigs too but we got a preview of Carter the last couple months and we got him three more years.

One MAC Tournament Championship Game appearance in last 5 years. That's not my definition of always in the hunt in the MAC.

Being in the semifinals certainly counts as being in the hunt. Now losing in the opening round and not even getting to Cleveland or falling in the quarterfinals would be a different story.

Nobody is too good for Ohio Basketball either, if another star rises in Athens, don't ever doubt Ohio. We are real fans that love and want the best for our school. You can't think Ohio will win when you say that players are too good to come here. Dont bring us down to a mediocre state.

It's amazing we got the #2 seed. Very good job by staff/players after losing Campbell.

I agree with this, but my point is that we missed a critical 5 year window to elevate the program following Sweet 16 season.

Exactly. Ohio loses its best player - who also happened to be the Laxt year's MAC POY and a candidate again this year - and still finished as the #2 seed while getting to the semifinals and was just :10 away from a championship game berth. Sure the loss was tough, but looking back at the season, it was another damn good one. And it isn't even over yet.

True. Had the program kept Groce OR made a better hire than JC a couple more NCAA berths could have happened. JC inherited loaded teams off a 29 win Sweet 16 season and couldn't win the MAC tournament. Once the cupboard was bare he bolted. He was a mistake by Schaus and the players said as much. But one thing to realize is the liberal braintrust isn't going to pay 2 million to keep a basketball coach here we aren't a little catholic school with a mission to be a beacon of prosperity for its city. There is crying about what Saul and Solich are making already. New president is making 25k less than McDavis.

I think we have a nice MVC style niche here where we there are guys like Jason Carter in our backyard that P5's ignore and can always get quality transfers like KK and Simmons. Rarely do we have players transfer out of Ohio. But there is a ceiling to freshman recruiting. We will never have a roster loaded with 1 and done NBA prospects like Kentucky. 2012 was our big year (almost elite 8) in the modern era and will stay on the books that way for a while.

The conference as a whole this year was pretty bad too. Fortunately for Ohio that coincided with losing their best player, so they were still able to scrape a 2 seed out of it. There was a 5-way tie for the 2 seed heading into the last game, so basically everyone in Cleveland not named Akron were all on roughly the same mediocre level.

Ohio did a great job without Campbell, we need more depth and we need to make some adjustments. I said a few weeks ago that i would take Groce if he were fired. i did not mean it as a slight. I was thinking strategically. I would not want to recruit against Groce in the MAC and face his team in the MAC tournament. Saul is a good coach and he proved it this year. he can become a great coach with better recruiting and better player development. let's see what he can do. A fan that rebutted me was right, Ohio will not buyout a coach to hire a coach that did great things and left the Bobcats. A lot of people got upset with me, but I was just being honest. Saul should be given a chance, but he should not be celebrated or crowned at this point. lets hope and pray for Ohio basketball success.

Careful....smart, intelligent comments like this one about JC will get some folks on here fired up. You nailed it about JC. People just don't want to admit he wasn't a good hire and they don't want to believe what all his players said about him. Not looking at Boals for that job was a big mistake. Thus, here we are 5 years later and we haven't built off sweet 16 season...opportunity lost. #6-48

I think that getting to 20 wins considering the loss of TC but losing multiple games with 20 point leads is unacceptable.

Shoulda won:
@Iona
@WKU
EMU
Toledo
@WMU

and maybe a couple of others.

Big season for Saul next year...

I really can't be upset by Ohio's performance since I've been a fan. I was a freshman in '08 and since then I've seen: two NCAA tourney appearances with three total wins and only two losing seasons in that time.

I obviously wish we could have gone to the Tournament within the past five years but circumstances have made that difficult to attain. First Groce leaves and Jim Christian underperforms with Groce's seniors (though it was still a good season). Then we have to start over with Saul. And after just three years, he has us completely rebuilt and positioned to win the MAC and go to the tourney....but then our MAC POY gets hurt.

I'm really not mad at all by the chain of events. This is a good program with a good coach. I'm a Cleveland sports fan and until the recent successes of the Cavs and Indians, the Ohio men's bb team was by far the most consistent and excellent team in my life.

Now, if this tournament drought extends another two-three years I could see myself being pretty annoyed but for now everything is totally fine.

Really good take here Morris. You are lucky to see all of this early on in your Bobcat rooting career. My college career featured 4 MAC Tournament quarterfinals losses....thank you Larry Hunter. There is a reason why he's not called Mr. March. Saul has two years to get the team to the dance before natives get restless. For a coach to lead this program, you can't go 5 full years without one NCAA Tourney appearance (unless you are Athens raised Larry Hunter). We aren't Northern Illinois. Critical 24 months ahead for #SaulBall.

Just because someone agrees with you doesn't automatically make them smart and intelligent.

I disagree that he left the cupboard bare. When JC left the roster still had future NBA player Maurice Ndour and future MAC POY Antonio Campbell on the roster along with another incoming big who actually lead the Big East in blocked shots this year.

I'm glad Saul is here now, but I don't think JC was a bad hire. What exactly has Boals done to prove we should have hired him at the time?

I'm watching Arkansas on ESPN right now and noticed that the 2 guys who were playing juco ball a year ago averaged a combined 25ppg for them in bigtime d-1 ball this season. And they already have a spot locked up in the big dance even if they lose this game.

I don't want to be rude about it but Ohio will not be going to many big dances in the current NCAA climate with the Ellis D's of the world. It takes a few juco guys to fill in the blanks and often a graduate transfer to make the difference.

If you are going to fill a schollie for 4-5 years on a guy out of high school, it needs to be a Jason Carter and not the other.
