If they don't promote from within, this will be a great gig. Jeff Boals was an Akron assistant and had a great first year at Stony Brook.

You better believe his agent has already placed 5 calls to Akron AD. It's who he is and what he does when he knows he has 12 months of employment left. #JC #6-48

I'd bet the house Jim Christian would not be interested in Akron. His BC contract means he's set for life.

I would like to think he aspires for more than that.

While they've been the standard of success, this program was Dambrot. Am I the only one who thinks they're in trouble without him?

I posted in the other thread, but I think Akron could be in the wilderness for a while. The debt service on InfoCision is debilitating, the school itself has well-known issues, and they're stuck with the JAR for at least the contract of the next few coaches. The right hire could make all the difference, but it's not a terribly attractive job in a lot of ways. I think Miami is a significantly better job despite the utterly divergent paths the two programs took over the last 10 years.

You're an up and coming coach and you're given a choice- Akron, Miami , or Ball St. Which do you chose?

Salary and budget resources being equal, Ball State.

They really want Boals over on the Akron message board, but I'm not sure they'd be able to afford both his buyout at Stony Brook and be able to pay him and his staff. The school is in enough financial trouble as it is.

Groce's name being thrown around a lot over there also.

What's the bigger gut-punch? Groce to Fiami or Groce to Kron?

Wow I don't know. Originally I would have thought Miami. But going to Akron after the games we've had with them during MAC Tournament time recently? It's not really a gut punch like Miami's would be. It's more of a kick to the balls.

You can make arguments for Miami and BallS, but Akron is firmly in last place among those options.

Miami has history, a strong institution and some commitment to put resources into the program (that they can likely back up with deep pocketed donors). On the flipside, it's been 10 years of garbage there and Millett is the dump you're stuck with for now. Add it the competition from hockey that only two other MAC schools have to face and it may tilt it in favor of Ball State to me.

Ball State has history, a nice arena with recent upgrades and some good momentum following many years of mediocrity.

Akron's D1 history is largely garbage followed by the golden era of Dambrot. The school has no money and pays $4 million a year for debt on an empty football stadium. There's no appetite for spending, and the arena is bad. Last but not least, during the golden era of winning, the fan base couldn't even fill the place. So you're replacing a legend who wrung every drop of potential out of the program and still couldn't attract fans. Nowhere to go but down there.

Well said sir. In general, that's my sentiment as well. I think they could be in trouble if they miss on the coaching hire even a little bit. We'll find out what Zippy is made of in the next 8-12 months.

Wasn't sure which thread would be the best, but here's a radio interview with him from this morning. Unless one of his assistants gets the HC job at Akron, sounds like they're all going to Pittsburgh.

Lost in all of this..... It's Akron.

Just sitting here thinking about life in Akron.

I've lived in Chicago, Dayton, Indiana, fort Dodge, Iowa and been in almost all of the states and a little bit of Europe and the South Pacific. I passed through Akron on the way to Kent this year and smiled thinking about the Rubber Bowl, Hoban, central Hower and lots of good things I also saw the Goodyear complex on a wet, sorry winter day and thought what a different life I would have living there. It's Akron.... And at the risk of sbh and Alan shusshing me this is one of the few times in all my posts I am gonna violate my"don't be negative" posting rule. It's Akron. I would be shocked if JG took the family there

There's a reason I transferred from Akron to Ohio. This sums it up pretty nicely.

The real answer for them is Joyce over at St. V.

If they want to keep that LeBron connection, hire that guy.

I'm just curious as to what you guys think that LeBron brings to the Akron basketball program? Yes, he's been very generous to the University as a whole, as well as the youth of the area. But what specificially is this "connection" that benefits Akron basketball players?

You mean other than Dambrot (and Joyce) coached the current greatest basketball player in the world? I think they got the Nike deal because of him too? Other than that I don't know.
